Chapter Twenty-One
Rae couldn't relax, not for a second. Keegan was in a complicated position and she could tell that he was anguished and worried, perhaps more than her. He kept the door constantly locked even when he was inside with her and the first night he was back, he didn't sleep a wink. She rolled to her side and saw him staring at the roof of the caravan in the dark. His breathing was normal but aggression emanated from him. She didn't say anything, she just watched him until her eyes felt droopy and she slept. She woke up to him banging a cabinet in the kitchen area. She sat up quickly and he apologized. “Sorry about that.”Rae rubbed her eyes. “Good morning.”“Morning,” he said. The circles around his eyes were dark and pronounced which indicated that he hadn’t slept a wink. She felt bad because she knew that she was the reason why he was so worried about Fred having the key. She couldn’t say that she wasn’t disturbed. It was clear that he was a freak and had the worst of intentions. What

Chapter Twenty-Two
Rae awoke suddenly. The caravan was dark. She stared at the dark roof quietly and tried to figure out if it was the same night because she felt like she slept through the week. She was well rested and not at all exhausted considering she woke up unexpectedly. What woke her? She couldn't tell. She sat up and eyed Keegan's bed. It was empty. A scowl pinched her features together and she stood up. The floor of the caravan was warm. He wasn't seated at the table and he never sat in the driver or passenger seats. The door was closed but they key wasn't there so she assumed he was outside. It was the only other option. Where had he gone so late in the night? Did he often do this? It was strange that she was living with him for close to two weeks and knew nothing about what he did on a daily basis. Perhaps two weeks wasn't enough to get to know someone. He was mysterious. She wondered if there was something else he was up to apart from gathering an army to fight Negan. She started wal

Chapter Twenty-Three
The morning was slow and unremarkable. Now that Fred had the key to the caravan, allegedly, Keegan couldn’t bare the thought of leaving it empty for a long period of time. When she had to use the woods, he would stay behind. She would stay behind most of the time but he wasn’t concerned that she was alone because he doubted that Fred would try to do something reckless in front of everyone. He was planning something big, Keegan was sure of it. She was tired of the entire situation and hoped that it would get resolved soon. She was bored most of the time and without training, her days were even longer than usual. She slept a bit after breakfast and immediately started reading her book after the nap. Keegan had gone somewhere so she was alone. As the book progressed, she unconsciously compared herself more and more to the main character. With a sinking heart, she concluded that she would never be such a female. She didn’t know any female who defied the laws and was successful about it

Chapter Twenty-Four
Every step Rae took away from the camp weighed on her heart and conscience. She was far enough now that if she screamed, she’d be brushed off as a night bird. She was regretting not saying a word when she had the chance. The deeper she went into the woods with him, the less her chances were of successfully escaping. He was bigger than her and undoubtedly his wolf was more skilled too. She was hoping for an intervention, particularly from Keegan’s side. Where was he? When would he notice that she was missing? She hoped it would be soon. Keegan was the one who was obsessed with keeping her safe so how could he disappear on her? She wasn’t considering that Fred might have gotten to him but only because she didn’t want to imagine the worst just yet. They were still walking and her guess was that he was going to take her far from the camp. It would give Keegan plenty of time to discover that she was missing and then chase them. Fred’s have was still on her mouth. He was sweating profuse

Keegan shook her lightly. Rae heard his voice from a distance. He was far away, so far that his voice echoed. He was telling her to wake up, pleading almost. Her sleep was too peaceful. She didn’t want to wake up. She didn’t know where she was but it was a comfortable place. She was totally relaxed and she couldn’t remember feeling this way in a long time. If it weren’t for Keegan’s voice in her ear, she would go on sleeping forever. She opened her mouth to tell him to go away. She didn’t want to be disturbed. She had forgotten about what had happened earlier with Fred and how she almost died. All she focused on was falling back asleep because it was the kind of sleepiness that she would never experience again. It was similar to napping on the couch and then being woken up. It ruined everything. “Rae, please,” he said gently. He sounded desperate. “Don’t do this to me. You can’t do this to me. Wake up. Rae. Rae!”She finally groaned. She was upset that he was insisting on waking her

Chapter Twenty-Six
A week had passed and Rae made a full recovery. Her feet still tingled whenever she stood for too long but she was better than before. She didn't feel pain on her neck and whenever she felt the area, she felt the scars. She didn't have a mirror so she couldn't see them but Keegan guaranteed her that he couldn't tell where the scars were. She sensed that he was lying to her but she appreciated the effort. He didn't want her to feel bad about what had happened but as much as his efforts were helpful, they were also in vain. She wouldn't be able to get the incident with Fred from her mind that easily. As the days passed and she interrogated Keegan, she got a clearer understanding of what went down that terrible night. Keegan was reluctant to share the truth with her but when she threatened to leave he told her everything she wanted to know. The truth was simpler yet more haunting than she assumed. Fred didn't want to just kill her that night. In all fairness, she understood why Keegan

Chapter Twenty-Seven
Things between them had changed. The change happened practically overnight. They woke up and turned to look at each other simultaneously and it was something that had never happened before. The intensity of his gaze stunned her. It made her shiver involuntarily and she was forced to hide in the bathroom while he prepared breakfast for the two of them. She wished she had a mirror so she could see the look on her face. She didn't doubt that she was blushing heavily. Her cheeks were warm to the touch. What was happening? She couldn't tell.Rae had to get a grip on herself. She didn't want Keegan getting the wrong idea. She was not in love with him. She was confusing her gratitude and her appreciation for him for...something else. She didn't plan on falling in love with anyone, much less Negan's brother because yes, that was what it all boiled down to. He was Negan's brother and she already established that the idea of mating with him to get back at his brother for rejecting her was temp

Keegan sighed and drank a whole bottle of water in one go. Rae watched him anxiously. She knew it had something to do with her pack. Her old pack, she meant. It was the reason why he didn't want to tell her the truth. Why he was hesitating. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and said, "It's about BloodMoon. Things aren't well."She was surprised by her need to know the truth. It was almost overpowering. "Why? What did you hear?"Keegan searched her face with his eyes and she resisted the urge to shout at him. "I have the right to know, alright? Tell me what the problem is." She couldn't begin to imagine what he had to say to her. What could be so bad that he did he want to talk about it?"It's your father," he said finally. "What about him?" she asked with a frown. Her heart began racing and her palms sweated. She wiped them on her shorts. She wasn't prepared for what he had to say. Not in the slightest. "I'm sorry, Rae," he said. "He died."Rae closed her eyes slowly.

The kiss was still on Rae’s mind. As much as she tried, she couldn’t forget it. She couldn’t push the thought of him out of her mind. She could say that he was a distraction from the pain she felt upon hearing the news of her father’s demise and the thought that she might be (was) responsible. She was by no means alright, though. As much as she was thrilled by how she felt when he kissed her, she couldn’t ignore that her family had been turned upside down because of her. Yes, she had the right to leave and for that she would never be sorry, but although she was tremendously upset with her parents for concealing the truth, she didn’t want them to get hurt. She tried not to think too much about them when she left and she could say that she succeeded. She thought mostly about the past and not necessarily the future, like how they were doing without her. That was a thought that actually never crossed her mind. But if she did, she’d never think that her father had died as soon as she le

Time seemed to be going by a lot slower than usual. It had been several days since Keegan told Rae that her father had died. The feelings of guilt and devastation left her. She was back to being her usual self. The thought still saddened her but it was in no way like the first days after she heard the news. That was the funny thing about grief and loss. It passed. Everything in life eventually came to an end, even pain, no matter how unbearable it was. Her relationship with Keegan was what changed tremendously. It was the little things that she noticed first. He would tell her where he was going and return when he said he would. He was more open about the happenings around the camp and told her which wolves were not to be trusted under any circumstance. It was a relief to know that he finally trusted her enough to tell her what he knew. They felt closer than ever before. She would give him her advice and he’d take it if he felt it could be used. They were communicating more, and th
