I sat in the reception area as I thumbed through a magazine while I pretended to read, but the truth is, I couldn't concentrate. I could hear my heart beating loudly against my chest and feel my hands tremble. I couldn't rest ever since I made up my mind to come to Sean for help. I've been waiting for a week for this appointment and now that it's happening I'm starting to have second thoughts. I could turn back right now and forget I was here.
"Mr. Sean is ready to receive you now if you're ready" I look up to find a petite, blonde, young lady saying to me. She must be his secretary.
"I am very much ready" I jumped up.
"This way" she motioned for me to follow her and I did. We walked down a long hallway and then turned before she stopped in front of a door with the tag 'CEO, Vikings Co. ' boldly carved on the door.
I can't believe this is happening.
"You can go in now," the lady says to me, indicating she's not going in with me.
"Thank you" she smiled and turned back.
I watched her walk down the hallway we just came from before I turned the doorknob and opened the door.
Sean was looking down, his head buried in a heap of documents as he flipped through them. He spoke before his head came fully up. "Miss Simpson, it's nice to…"
Then he froze when he saw who had come into his office. His eyes fixed on mine, taking me in. There was a flash of surprise in his eyes for a second but it was quickly replaced by anger.
The last time I saw him, I was breaking up with him while he begged me with tears in his eyes, the same pair of eyes that are staring at me three years later. Opting not to look him in the eyes any longer, my gaze traveled down to his large hands and the veins protruding from them. His face looks exactly the same way I remember but his body had changed. Hell, a lot of things have changed.
His chest is way broader than the way it used to be and I could see them stretching his shirt from where I was standing. The first two bottoms were open, revealing the hairs on his chest.
"What are you doing here?" His voice was cold, It held no emotion. I take that as an excuse to sit since he doesn't look like he's going to offer me one.
"I'm... I'm here for business" I stuttered.
Technically, I'm here to ask him to help me with some funds. Last year my mum was diagnosed with lung cancer, stage 3, and had to go into chemotherapy. I lost my job a couple of months ago and all I have left with me was spent on her treatment. I'm two months behind and the hospital had called in threatening to stop her treatments if I don't pay up.
Sean is the last person I know who could help me out. I feel ashamed of myself for turning to him now after what I did to him.
"I see," he says, not breaking his gaze away from me.
"Yes," I swallowed.
"My secretary put you on the morning list, saying it is urgent. I wonder what it could be"
"It is," I confirmed. My heart is pounding louder against my chest.
"My mom," I started to explain.
"She's been battling cancer since last year. I lost my job not quite long and all I had was used up on her treatments. The hospital has started calling in for payment, or else they will stop her treatments." I say looking him in the eye.
He nodded and urged me to continue. "So"
"I need some money, I'll pay it back once I can get a job," I say finally.
I waited.

Then he broke out in laughter while I eyed him.
Did he think this is funny?
"What makes you so sure I will help you?"
"I…" I stopped, forcing myself not to break down in front of him.
" I don't know. I have no one to go to for help, you're the only person I could think of…"
"It's been three years, Katara," he says, his voice holding meaning. I winced as the sound of my name rolled off his lips. He never called me that. It's always been, Katie.
He's right, it's been three years and a lot of things have changed.
"I know, '' I whispered. I closed my eyes while the event that happened flooded my memory.
I opened my eyes to find him staring at me, his expression emotionless. I couldn't tell if he was angry at me or not.
We were like this for a while. Just staring at each other. No speaking. I waited for him to say something–anything, but he did not.
That's it, he's not going to help me. I shouldn't have come here in the first place.
"I think I should leave." Standing up, I pushed the chair back hurriedly and grabbed my bag, running for the door. I felt like an idiot coming in here to ask for his help.
"Katie" His voice stopped me in my tracks.
That name, if only he knew how much I yearned to hear him call me that again.
I heard him push back his chair and stand up. I turned and watched him as he circled the mahogany desk and stopped when he got to where I was
standing.
"Who says you could leave?"
"I thought of you…" I thought you weren't going to help me because I dumped your ass three years ago. But I couldn't say that.
"... aren't going to help you?" He completed and I nodded.
"I will." He announced. He watched as my eye flickered in excitement and I looked up at him to see if he meant what he just said.
"Really?"
"Yes, but only on one condition"
I stayed silent and waited for him to continue. I'd do anything he asks as long as he's willing to help me.
"You marry me," he says finally.
"What? Marry you?"
"Of course, it's going to be fake. The company shareholders want me to get married to keep my inheritance, something about a will my late father left before he passed on. So, I'll agree to help you if you can pose as my fiancé" he explained.
"What makes you think I'm fit for this job?"
"You were once my girlfriend, it'll be more believing when I say we got back together than to find a new person" That makes sense, I never think about that.
He went back to his desk and pulled out a drawer and I watched him bring out a small velvet box.
He handed over the box to me. "I'm not going to impose it on you, you can get back to me whenever you make a decision, but make sure you're wearing that"
After leaving Sean's office, I headed straight for the hospital. Earlier when I left there mom wasn't in a good condition but I had to leave because of my appointment with Sean. I'm relieved that I'm done with that part, before going in, I was nervous as I was fearing what was to come. What his reaction might be or what he would say regarding showing up in his office and asking for help out of the blue.It didn't go exactly the way I had pictured. I imagine him to blow up and mock me for crawling back to him not thinking of what I did to him. I imagine him laughing at my face and calling me out on my stupid. I imagined that I would cry out of his office and regret ever going in but things didn't go the way I had pictured it in my head.Earlier when he was quiet I thought he wasn't going to help or perhaps might give an excuse not to help.I dip my right hand right hand into my jacket and reach for the box housing the ring he had given me earlier."Of course, it's going to be fake. The
I jumped out of the hot tub and grabbed a towel to clean myself, almost tripping on the floor in the process. I rushed into my closet and grabbed the nearest pajama short and an old shirt I could find, wearing it hurriedly. I settled on my bed before bringing out my phone to reply to him."I assume it is an official party. Are people not going to be worried about the time you proposed?" I replied back. Some seconds passed before his photo icon started dancing indicating that he's typing."I am private with my life, they won't be surprised if I tell them we got back together and I proposed right away" he replied."That sounds perfect," I replied."Yes" he texted back. For some minutes, I contemplated what to say next but couldn't find anything. Not wanting to impose any conversation on him, I close the tab and prepare to sleep. The dress came in earlier like he had promised, it's a black custom made ball dress. It has a little flare and beautiful embroidery at the hem. I tried it on an
He looked at me with eyes filled with concern. I watched as he brought his hand up in an attempt to feel my temperature. I don't think I'm burning up. Sean confirmed that too."You're aren't burning up, you seem to be fine" he says stilllooking at me intently."What, I'm… fine" I say to him. I'm glad he's concerned about me but another part of me couldn't help but think it's just for his sake. If I fall sick we wouldn't be able to attend the gala we are about to go to and that will be a disadvantage on his part."You don't look fine to me. You were staring into space and I shouted your name for god's knows how long" he explained.I realized that he had packed in an underground driveway. I didn't even realize we are already at the party."I was just preoccupied. It's been a long week, you shouldn't worry about me" I tried to push him off.Well, it's not like I can say it to his face that I was thinking about him. Not that he cares anyway."The hell shouldn't I worry" he bashed out. "Se
Sean POV I felt stupid for snapping at Katie earlier. Well she was also acting so stubborn reminding me of the ways she used to be. Little had changed about her at all. When she walked into my office last week I felt like I had seen a ghost. I mean she was the last person I was expected to see. I wanted to answer her and mock her but her state stopped me from doing so. The look on her face tells me she isn't in my office on her own free will. Like I was the last person she wanted to come to. I know Katie so well, like my own second flesh. The first time I set my eyes on her I knew she was the one. I knew she's the right one for who I'm going to marry. She doesn't know this but I do. I had plans for us. Visions for us. I had imagined how I'll pump my baby in her and watch her belly grow and produce little me or little Katie. So, when she broke up with me it felt as if my life was turned upside down. Like a part of me had stopped. The light in my darkness was quenched. I never Wh
Kate's povI was feeling uneasy all night. First I'm not used to getting this much attention. I've always been the quiet type and hard to notice girl. During high school and hrough out my college my college days. Secondly, the way I'm holding hands with Sean, it's bringing back memories.Memories of the happy days."Son of a bitch" Sean muttered beside me, gazing at something beside me and I looked up to find Zack Tyler walking up to us. Tyler was my ex back at college way back before I met Sean. He's the one who broke my heart when he cheated on me with my then best friend, Rosalie. I'd vow not to trust men or ever love any of them until Sean. He came and then turned my life around, I learnt how to love, live, laugh and enjoy life like how a Norman person should.Sean is the reason for my existence, and that's the reason why my life flipped when I broke up with him. I didn't mean to give up the love of my life, but when I found out the truth, I couldn't do anything other than run aw
"You need to come to the hospital right now," the voice yelled. It was 3 am in the morning when my phone rang. I picked it without checking the screen to look at the caller ID."What?" My eyes flew open and I yanked the phone away from my ear and brought it to my face.Nurse Hailey. She's the nurse appointed to take care of my mother. I had given her my contact to reach me in case of any emergency. She is the one I go to anytime I want to reach mom and she updates me about her wellbeing. My heart raced as I pulled back the phone to my ear. I"Katara? Are you there? Can you hear me?" She was saying it but my mind wasn't registering what she was saying."Katie?" She called again when she didn't hear anything.I snapped instantly, what was happening now registering in my brain. I looked at the screen of the phone to confirm that she was still on."Yes, I can hear you" I say back to her swallowing a big lump down my throat while I dread what she is about to say."Okay. I want you to keep
Kayla also showed up not long after when she heard the news. Thanks to Sean who drove me home as I was in no condition to drive back home. I was later informed that it was the hospital that called him in as he was in charge of paying up her medication and taking care of her bills till she died.A week after we put her to rest and buried her. Those who attended her funeral. just a couple of people. Sean, his driver, Kayla, people from her work, people from the hospital, Dr Griffin, Nurse Hailey and some others. some other mom's friends were present too which I recognize from the picture. It was quiet that morning when we buried her. The clouds were misty like it was about to rain. After the short service, the undertaker lifted her corpse lower into the ground.I hadn't cried until this part. It hit me that my mother is gone finally and I'm never going to see her.Life is so cruel. She is too good to die. She never deserved any of this.I felt Kayla's arms wrapped around me as I wailed
Sean POVI was seated in the study of my mansion when I heard the jingles of a key and the door opening. I was watching the reactions of people online after I had posted the picture of Katie's fingers online. I purposely didn't reveal her face yet but I will soon.I'm stalling that process for the reactions to grow massively and keep people waiting before I finally let the cat out of the bag.Earlier today when I made a proposal to her, I wasn't really planning it. The ring I haven't heard of was just a coincidence. I went in there to pick a ring for her so we could continue the pretense we had going on but she beat me to it when she started discussing the part and I know the only ticket I can use on her is a proposal. She recently lost her mother and I'm not obliged to owe her anything and I know when she finds a job soon she'll call out agreement quits so I had to do what I did to save my ass.The study door opened, revealing my best friend, Rick walking in. He had a big scowl on hi
