Running On Empty

I dropped to the ground weakly, landing on my back next to Karla and tried to see if I was shot after all when I felt the sticky liquid spreading towards me from Karla's limp body. I heard seven pairs of footsteps echoing throughout the warehouse as they came racing towards me, Koa easily reaching me first since he had always been the fastest out of the group. He pulled me gently into his tight embrace, "Shh, shh, I've got you..You're safe now.." He was smoothing my hair out of my face while checking over my injuries. I looked over at the now lifeless body of Koa's mother and felt my eyes beginning to sting. "It's okay, just let it go.." I buried my face into his chest as the tears quickly made for their escape. I couldn’t believe that this might be finally over.
