Chapter 10

She tugged at Zoey\'s clothes and begged miserably. \"Zoey, I know you hate me. You hurt yourself to slander me. I know you must love Jerome deeply. Even though you got pregnant with another man’s child, it must be because he neglected you. I swear to God that I love him and would never betray him.\" She spoke softly and was wide-eyed.

“Let go of me!\" Zoey angrily tried to pull the hem of her dress out of Xyrille’s hand, but she held on to it tightly.

  \"Ah!\"

Xyrille\'s eyes widened even more, and she fell back. Jerome saw that she was about to hit the wall behind her, and he quickly stepped forward, and held her in his arms.

\"I...\" Xyrille\'s forehead was in a cold sweat, and her hands covered her abdomen. \"My belly hurts…our child, we must save our child...\"

Whatever doubts he had, they were all swept away, and now he was sure Zoey was really set on hurting her former best friend. \"If anything happens to Xyrille and the child, I promise you, you will end up wishing you were dead!\"

With that, he angrily carried her away.

Zoey stood there for several seconds, then slowly walked out and took a taxi to the hospital.

As Xyrille was being examined in the clinic, Zoey calmly walked up to Jerome. \"I will prove to you that I have never cheated.\"

She had requested for a DNA test on the amniotic fluid. Though her appearance was ragged and unkempt, and even though everyone knew that Jerome had divorced her, a young male doctor seemed to be sympathetic towards her. He dealt with her request very urgently.

After the procedure, Zoey lay on the bed. Numbly, she opened her eyes and looked at the ceiling above her head. She was now wearing a hospital gown, as white and clean as the sheets beneath her. She closed her eyes and imagined herself, wearing white and clean clothes.

The silence was broken only by the ticking of the clock on the wall.

She imagined the room to be a tomb, and she was buried in it.

After a few hours, the door of her room was suddenly kicked open from the outside.

Zoey was startled, and sat up from the bed. Jerome stormed in. He held a sheet of paper, crumpled it and threw it at her. “Congratulations! You’re still a lying, cheating whore!”

Zoey picked up the crumpled sheet of paper and looked at it. At a glance, the blood all over her body rushed straight to her brain.

The last column showed that her child was not related with Jerome!

She grasped the report, crumpled it back into a ball in anger. \"Impossible! impossible! The child belongs to you! The only man I had ever been with was you!\"

With that, she seemed to think of something, pointed to Jerome and said, \"Did you change the report on purpose? This report was not mine at all! You gave me the wrong report--\"

In the face of her unwarranted accusations, Jerome screamed at her. “Stop it! Enough!”

He took a deep breath. \"At this point, facts speak louder than words. What was I even thinking, giving you another chance to lie to me?\"

\"I\'m not lying. If it\'s not you, it\'s Xyrille!\" Zoey lifted the quilt and got out of bed. \"I don\'t believe the result! I want to have another test! I\'ll keep an eye on the doctor! Jerome, trust me!\"
