Chapter 15

Summer’s POV

I rushed into the hospital in disbelief at what had just happened and what I had committed to. The young girl tackles me, hugging my thighs, crying, “Thank you for saving me.” As I struggle to loosen her grip on me, Elizabeth comes up to me with a cup of coffee. “I was curious why this child is searching for me and who had sent her.” Elizabeth says, looking at me. “I’ll explain later. After I speak with Alpha Jackson,” is the only response that feels right without lying to her. I know she wouldn’t let me go. But there are children at risk.

I leave her with the girl as I scurry off to find Alpha Jackson. When I find Alpha Jackson, he’s sitting quietly with Mrs. Clayton. Holding her hand while she was unconscious, lying in the hospital bed. She looks pale, almost gray. Her breathing is shallow and fast. I don’t quite believe what she is doing can be called breathing. I can hear her gurgling with every breath she takes. Giving the impression of drowning, as fluid builds
