Chapter 8

Under the same starry night sky, Hank drove his brand new, black Cayenne to Charter Estate. He parked it in a secluded area that was just about 15 feet away.

He had just gotten off the phone with Simone's dad. For some reason, he drove here on instinct.

This secluded area was where he would park his car after he sent Summer home from their dates.

The parking space had a perfect view of the balcony on the second floor. It would always light up before Summer would stick half her body out to wave goodbye at him.

However, those days were in the past. Right now, Hank placed one hand on the steering wheel as he strummed his fingers idly.

He glanced at the clock on the dashboard. It was now 11:15 pm, and the lights in Summer's room were still on like how they used to be. The only difference now was that he could no longer see her silhouette waving goodbye to him.

Hank thought back to what had happened in his office in the afternoon and forced a bitter smile onto his face.

She was right. He really was a bastard.

If it weren't for her, there was no way he could've gotten such a high-paying job at Charter Corporation right after his graduation.

Hank was smart, cunning, and knew when to cut his losses. If he was being honest, he knew that Simone wanted him when they had first met.

If it weren't for the fact that the Youngs were one of the most powerful families in the country, he would never have made the decision to seduce Simone. However, what he never expected was for him to actually fall in love with her instead …

Perhaps what he felt for Simone wasn't really love. After all, love was nothing more than chemicals in his brain. At that thought, he reached for a cigarette, but crushed it in his hands before he could light it up.

He tossed the remnants of the crushed cigarette out of his window in annoyance. Then, he started his car and drove straight to Simone's new apartment.

On that fateful day, Hank had just walked into a restaurant with Summer when he received a call from Simone's father. Thankfully, Summer had to use the restroom, so Hank took that opportunity to pick up the call.

It was a straightforward call that confirmed that Simone and Hank were going to be engaged.

Hank had always used cunning means to get what he wanted. In that instance, his greedy heart had been filled with unbridled joy.

His excitement only increased when he and Summer had been picked to participate in a couple's event for the restaurant. They even won the grand prize.

At that time, Hank had snuck a glance at Summer. Her innocent smile was enough to make him feel guilty. Of course, that only lasted for a split second.

Ever since he had decided to partner with rival companies to betray Charter Corporation, he had used his identity as an employee of upper management to steal important, confidential documents from Charter Corporation.

Hank had attacked Charter Corporation from the inside out, where it was the weakest. In doing so, he had also ruined his relationship with Summer.

He had heartlessly betrayed Charter Corporation and sided with the Youngs to take over the company. Yet, it was only today when he was confronted by her did he realize that he only felt the slightest shred of guilt for everything he had done to her.

Summer, whom he had fallen for at the start, was still as strong-willed as ever. Before she kicked him and ran away, she had spat out, "Charter Corporation won't fall to ruin so easily! Someday, you will regret this!"

Did she mean that he would regret leaving her? Or would he regret betraying Charter Corporation?

Regardless, Hank huffed before grumbling, "Who knows what the future will hold?"

After that, he sped off toward Aqua Gardens.

Two days later, Summer walked out of Taznet Bank with her bag slung on her shoulder. She didn't sleep a wink at all last night.
