Instead, she allowed Grayson to lead her by the hand to that SUV. Her breathing was loud, her legs felt weak, but without his cane and with a bad knee, she was more of the one helping to hold Grayson up. Helping him keep steady as they exited the garage into the night.

He kept murmuring into her ear that things would work out. There was nothing to worry about. They’d be home soon safe and sound. He wouldn’t let anything happen to her. But Amber really wasn’t listening to him. He’d already fucking let something happen to her.

Amber spared a glance up at the night sky. The moon was full and round, the air crisp, and the sounds of life continued around them. Somewhere a dog barked, a car honked, a seagull squawked, the waves slapped against the docks. It's rhythm was almost hypnotic in a way. The rhythm of life helped to ground Amber, helped to keep her from losing her shit.
