On his day off, he came to meet my mom with me.

When my mom learned that he was a cop, not a soldier like she had assumed, she pulled me aside softly. "Being a cop is a dangerous job. You shouldn't have to live in fear and worry."

I cut her off. "Mom. I appreciate your love and concern for me. But I need you to give him a chance to show you who he really is and why I love him."

My mom knew that I always made my own choices since I was little and didn't argue much, but when she talked to Darrian, she often looked sad and worried.

Darrian and I left my mom's house after dinner. Instead of driving, he took my hand, and we strolled in the night.

I could tell he had picked up on my mom's thoughts and was feeling conflicted.
