The Accident

Tabitha blinked at the tidings she had just heard on her cell phone. The cell phone unknowingly slipped out of her hands and fell on the carpet covering her bedroom floor. It all feels like a dream. Just last night, she went out to Dinner with Ethan and told her boyfriend she was pregnant. Ethan's reaction was initially shocked, and the next second he was overjoyed to hear of Tabitha's pregnancy. The man kissed her deeply and intensely. Ethan said they would marry soon and tell his family about Tabitha's pregnancy. However, now she got information from her friend that the man died in an accident this morning.

"He died on the spot, Tabby. With an eighteen-year-old girl. They're drunk."

She had just heard those words from Lana, her best friend. She sat slowly on the edge of his bed.

Ethan died with a girl.

Those words kept ringing in her head. Tabitha didn't know whether to be sad or angry at the news that shook her. Even she was confused, was she surprised by the timing of Ethan's death or because the guy was with a teenage girl?

"Honey… what are you doing?" her mother asked when Margareth, usually called Meg, entered her daughter's room.

"He died this morning in a car accident. He died at the accident scene. Both are said to be in a drunken state, and that might be the cause of the accident," Tabitha replied calmly. As if he was telling the weather.

Meg kept silent to understand Tabitha's words, which surprised her. She has liked Ethan, her daughter's lover, since high school. Ethan and Tabitha had been in a relationship since they were fifteen, and they were together for thirteen years. Their friends and family believe Ethan and Tabitha are the perfect couples. They became the favorite couple in their circle, and everyone can confirm that they both will end up in marriage, seeing that there has never been a scandal. Ethan's parents liked Tabitha and often took her on vacations with the Jackson family. Likewise, the other way around. Tabitha's parents also liked Ethan very much and always involved him in Tabitha's family events.

"Ethan died with a girl?" asked Meg again to be sure.

Tabitha replied by nodding her head.

"This morning?"

"Yes, Mom."

Meg looked at Tabitha intently and said, "Didn't you and Ethan go for dinner last night?"

"Tabitha took a deep breath. She closed her eyes to calm herself. Her emotions were very shaken. Right now, she wanted to get angry and scream, but she knew there was no point in doing that as it would only embarrass her. She didn't even know what she was crying.

Was it heart that was because Ethan was out with another girl or for the man's death?

Reflexively she touched her stomach. Tabitha's tears fell down her cheeks. She started sobbing. She wept for herself and the child in her womb. She wasn't crying for Ethan. Not. That man had killed Tabitha's love in his death. Meg watched her daughter's hand move. She immediately understood, and Meg crouched in front of her daughter, who was looking down, sobbing.

"Tabitha… are you pregnant?" Meg asked as she touched Tabitha's hand, and her daughter answered with a sad cry. Meg immediately understood. She hugged her daughter and patted Tabitha on the back gently.

"Everything's going to be all right, Honey," Meg said to support her daughter. "There is nothing for you to regret and cry about it. We will face everything together. There's your dad and me and your brother, Trevor."

Tabitha remained silent. She didn't want to say anything right now. The only thing wanted was peace. She glanced at her cell phone, which was still lying on the carpet, as it rang. Ethan's mother's name was on her phone screen. Tabitha stared at her phone screen for a long time until the ringing finally disappeared. She knew Ethan's mother was not at fault, but for now, she didn't want anything to do with Ethan's family.

Meg understands that her daughter is currently choosing to silence. Meg didn't want to think about Ethan and the girl who died with him. Meg's main focus was on making sure her daughter was okay, as well as her emotions. Her daughter is pregnant. It was a reality she had to accept, and she would be with Tabitha through the difficult times.

"Do you want breakfast downstairs or here?" Meg asked, standing up without taking her hand from Tabitha's hand.

"I won't stay here, Mom. And I don't want to bother anyone." Tabitha asked.

"Of course, Honey." Meg smiled gently at her daughter. "I'll bring your breakfast here." After saying that, Meg left the room. Tabitha was now lying on the bed.
