Chapter 6

Grace's POV

The next morning I made my way to my cabin, not before wishing Valentina a good morning who returned it with a big smile. I placed my things on my desk before moving out to grab some coffee for Mr Knight.

I took the cup in my hand along with a sandwich I had bought for him on the way, knowing he doesn't have breakfast. I gently knocked on the door and entered after hearing a stern come in. I wished him as I placed the coffee and sandwich on his desk. He eyed the sandwich curiously before concentrating back on his work.

"What do I have on schedule today?" He kept his eyes locked on the laptop.

"You just have a meeting today with Mr Steve to further discuss the project." I explained. For some reason I don't know, I didn't trust this Mr Steve. I mean that day at the meeting the way he was looking at me did not feel right. And then he even commented about me casually to Mr Knight. That too right in front of me. His eyes gave away something. Something mischievous. My sixth sense was telling me that I should investigate everything before Mr Knight signs off the deal with him.

Mr Knight nodded at me before telling me to proofread a few documents that he emailed me. I went back to my office to work. I was concentrating on the words on my screen when all of a sudden my phone rang.

"Hello," I answered without removing my eyes from the screen.

"Miss Miller! This is Claire" I sighed at the name. I knew what was coming. She was the owner of the house I was living in and I had to pay her the rent for two months now since I was not able to pay last month. I had been saving up for the rent which often had me sleeping empty stomach on several nights but I was doing everything I could. The month was still not over so I hadn't yet received my paycheck and now I could only hope she gives me a little more time.

"Well it's the 10th of May. Like you promised, I should be receiving my money today." She sassed.

"Claire I know I promised but I still haven't received my paycheck. Can you please wait till the 20th or something, I promise I'll pay all the debts." I tried reasoning but she wasn't having it.

"No girl! I have had enough of you. That's what you say everytime. I'm giving you three days. If I don't get my money in three days, I'm kicking you out and that's final!" She boomed and hung up without listening to me.

Now what the hell was I supposed to do? I squinted my eyes shut, pinching my nose, trying to figure out a way out of this mess. And only one logical thing crossed my mind. Maybe I can ask Mr Knight for an advance payment. I mean I have been an efficient worker up till now. Haven't I? I haven't really given him any excuse to get angry at me. Could he do me this favor?

A reminder on my phone rang signaling that it was time for the meeting with Mr Steve. I sighed, making a point of asking Mr Knight for the advance payment after the meeting.

I couldn't help but gaze at Mr Steve curiously. He kept smirking whenever Mr Knight said something about the deal or the company. That creep even had the audacity to wink at me secretly when Mr knight wasn't looking. I glared at him deciding to let it go as this deal was everything for Mr Knight and I didn't want to ruin it.

"Very well then Mr Knight. Can't wait to sign off the deal the day after tomorrow," Mr Steve shook hands with Mr Knight after the meeting was done.

"The pleasure is all mine Mr Steve," Mr Knight replied with a curt nod. And within a few minutes, the room cleared out leaving behind me alone with Mr Knight. I started gathering the papers, finding a way to bring up the topic of advance payment while Mr Knight was busy punching in letters on his phone. His eyebrows were scrunched, showing he was concentrating on something rather important. Thus I decided to bring up the topic in his office.

"Bring the files on the recent project," he demanded before leaving for his office.

I made my way to the cabin to get him the files that I prepared yesterday. As I was almost there, I saw Mr Steve coming out of my cabin. I raised my eyebrows wondering what he was doing there. He saw me and his expression paled for a second only to be replaced by a smile.

"Did you need anything?" I asked as he stood under my scrutinizing gaze.

"Oh no, I was just looking for the restroom," he replied, rubbing his hands together.

"It's left down the corridor," I pointed out and he speeded in the direction after murmuring a quick thank you.

I entered my cabin to see everything was alright and seemed perfect just as I left it. God, I need to stop having negative thoughts. I shook my head and picked up the file that Mr Knight had asked me to bring.

I placed them on his desk before he picked them up to read the data. I was playing with my fingers, waiting for him to get done so I could discuss what I had wanted to.

I saw him as he went through the details hurriedly before his eyebrows scrunched down in confusion and an angry expression masked his face.

"What the hell is this Miss Miller? Do you not work with your eyes open?" My heart beat sped at his sudden outburst.

"I ... What's.. what's wrong Mr Knight?" I stuttered out, not knowing exactly what he was angry about.

"What's wrong? This whole document is fucking messed up. And I would have lost a million dollars for your stupid mistake. Are you even paying attention while preparing all this for me?" His voice boomed down the corridor as he threw the papers in the air making them fly in every direction and scatter over the floor. He got up from his chair, reaching for his door.

"Get this shit fixed before I come back!" With that he left.

I nervously bent down on my knees to gather up the papers with my heart still threatening to burst out from my rib cage. His anger is seriously something. I didn't even know what was wrong with the document. I stacked the papers up before going through them. My eyes widened at what I saw. It was the terms and condition of the deal that he was about to sign in two days.

Originally it was decided that after signing the deal, Mr Knight would become owner of 30 % shares of Mr Steve's company. But the papers I was reading mentioned that Mr Steve would become owner of 30% shares of Mr Knight's company? What the hell? I can't make this big of a mistake. I knew I had the documents reviewed a million times and everything was fine... unless..... That bastard. I knew who was behind it.

That fucker had replaced the papers. That's why he was in my office. No wonder I got those negative vibes from him. I knew he wasn't good news from the start and just proved it. That means he is planning something bigger! Now I need to convince Mr Knight to call off the deal with him. The only question was how?

I sighed, getting up as another thought roamed my mind. Here goes my chance of asking him for the advance payment. Boom.
