Chapter 10

Jade was unfazed when she heard the onlookers talk about calling the police. Instead, she yelled, “Who are you to come to her aid when you know nothing? Let me tell you how wicked and lowly this woman is. She was a murderer three years ago. She pushed my daughter-in-law, who was four months pregnant at that time, and caused her to miscarry all because she wanted to seduce my son!”

Jade had a great talent for twisting the truth. After she had said that, the crowd immediately switched sides and glared at Yvonne in disgust. “I could never tell by looking at her. So young but so evil!”

Yvonne shuddered in anger. She had wanted to settle things quietly and leave, but she ended up calling the police because Jade had provoked her.

The police soon arrived, and Jade said furiously, “Do you know who my son is? He is Jackson Miller. My in-law is Secretary Summers. You guys should know your place before you do anything”

The police had heard of Jackson Miller and Secretary Summers. They turned around and tried to persuade Yvonne, “Surely, this is just a small matter. Why don’t you accept Madam Miller’s money as compensation and settle this in private?”

“I don’t want her money or to settle this in private! Why should I do that?” Yvonne retaliated.

“You won’t gain anything by bringing this to court. You suffered minor injuries, and it was the driver who drove the car. Anyhow, you will end up receiving monetary compensation from her. After all, she’s President Miller’s mother and Secretary Summers’ in-law, right?”

The police officer’s words made sense, but they stung Yvonne to hear them. She stubbornly refused to settle things in private.

The police officer could not do anything else, except to send Yvonne to the hospital for her injuries. Yvonne had injured both her hands and feet, so the doctor dressed her wounds in gauze for her. She was just getting her wounds bandaged when hurried footsteps were heard at the door. Then, Jackson and his assistant, James, pushed the door open and stood at the entrance.

Yvonne was stunned to see Jackson there. The doctor knew who Jackson was and hurriedly paid his respects, “President Miller!”

“Get out. I have something to say to her!”

The doctor immediately nodded and left them alone in the room. Jackson stared down at Yvonne and asked in an icy voice, “Tell me. How much money do you want?”

Yvonne had not expected to hear those few words to be the first thing he said when he arrived, and she shook in anger. “Mr. Miller, do you think everyone is as shameless as you? Do you think everyone is as money-minded as you?”

“Yes, you have a great sense of morals and ethics. You’re unique. But aren't you also stuck in a desperate situation?” Jackson snorted with laughter. “Yvonne Yates, you’ve become nothing after you left me!”

He was the one who had insisted on getting divorced, and also the one who had refused to let her take a single cent with her. Now the same man seemed to be acting nobly as if she owed him a favor.

How could he be this shameless? Yvonne’s heart stung as she pursed her lips and suppressed the disappointment in herself. She smiled at Jackson. “At least I’m still Yvonne Yates, even without you. Jackson Miller, did you know? I felt I was more dead than alive in the three years I spent with you. Now, I can finally live for myself and have my freedom. I do not need to suffer from your mother’s kicks and shouts, nor do I have to put up with a loser like you. Why wouldn’t I be content with my life?”

Jackson shot a serious look with his eyes. “If that’s the case, why did you come back?”

“South City is my home. Do I need your permission to come back home, President Miller?”

“No, you don’t. But answer this question for me, Yvonne Yates. Did you come back because you heard that Fiona and I are getting engaged?”

“Haha, you think too highly of yourself, President Miller. I just need my heart broken by a sc*m like you only once in my life. I wouldn’t subject myself to doing something so disgusting again even if I become disabled. So, don’t worry. I’ll avoid you whenever I see you.”

She addressed him so formally, and her expression was apathetic. Jackson had a terrible feeling in his stomach. Was the woman in front of him the Yvonne he had loved for five years? The Yvonne he knew used to smile and laugh all the time. She would never say anything mean to anyone. She would choose to be in his arms and talk to him instead. Now the Yvonne in front of him seemed to be defensive. There was no feeling other than anger and hatred in her eyes as she looked into his eyes.

‘This should not have ended like this. She was the one who had made a mistake. Why does she make herself sound so self-righteous?’

He suppressed the overwhelming feelings stirring in him. “That’s good to hear. I hope you’ll keep to your promise and vanish from my sight, Ms. Yates! And remember to never, ever, disturb Fiona!”

Jackson threw a gold card down angrily before he left. As Yvonne stared at the gold card used to shut her up, she could not stop the tears from flowing from her eyes!

Three years ago, he had been cruel enough to strip her of every penny before kicking her out. Three years later, he had sent her to the police station right after they first met again. Now, he had humiliated her in such a horrible manner. She hated herself. How could she have fallen in love with a man as disgusting as him? Why had she suffered three years' worth of hell for that man?
