8. Make Life Difficult for Her

For the rest of the day, Gery was grumpy. He nagged Dave as well as some of the managers who happened to see him that afternoon. Everyone wondered what was wrong with their boss. It was apparent that he was in a bad mood.

"What's wrong with Mr. Gery?" asked Ms. Jenni, the marketing manager who was Eve's boss.

Dave just shrugged his shoulders. He was in a bad mood because the work atmosphere was no longer comfortable. It was unusual for Mr. Gery to be like that after the incident about two years ago when a very personal problem entangled the man.

The woman then stepped into the CEO's room to meet Mr. Gery, who had called her on the parallel office line with a furious tone. She became a little afraid of whether she had made a mistake or what to be called so suddenly without any need beforehand.

Inside, the tall man was sitting behind his desk, gazing down at the files.

"Um, sir... did you call me?" asked Ms. Jenny as she cleared her throat slightly to announce her presence, even though the boss exactly heard the sound of the door opening and the clicking of her heels on the luxurious marble floor.

Only then did Mr. Gery answer without taking his eyes off her.

"Yes, Ms. Jenny. I called you because I have something to ask you. I heard that you have a new assistant. Is that right?"

Ms. Jenny looked surprised to be asked such a question. Usually, Mr. Gery would not talk about his staff at all. His business is with himself, the manager only, unless he was seriously absent and had to delegate to another staff under him, which had never happened before.

"Yes, sir. She's a replacement for my old assistant, who resigned because she got married and moved out of town with her husband," Ms. Jenny replied. She then wondered if she was supposed to report when there was a new staff.

"I don't care who she replaces. All I want is you must make her job as hard as possible. Give her tasks that most new staff can't do. Don't let she could relax in this company for a moment." With a stern expression, Gery gave the order.

"Wh-what, sir? But why?" Ms. Jenny almost stuttered in shock at the absurd order from her boss.

"Do I have to tell you why I'm doing something, Ms. Jenny?" Gery asked with a sharpening gaze.

"Of course not, sir. But I was just wondering-"

"Don't question anything. Just do as I ordered. The point is, make that girl's life here difficult. I want to see to what extent she will be able to survive here," Gery continued as his lips now wore a sly smile.

Moments later, Ms. Jenny came out of the room and faced a questioning look from Dave outside the door. It seemed like the man had been overhearing, although he couldn't get anything because Mr. Gery's room was so large, and there was no way that someone outside the door could easily overhear his private conversation.

In response, Ms. Jenny just shook her head with a confused expression. She didn't know what had happened to their boss. Now she is really in the dilemma of what to do with Eve.

Dave himself had suspected that Gery must have talked about Eve with Ms. Jenny. Because Eve was an assistant under Ms. Jenny, but he didn't dare to guess what they were talking about. Perhaps, uh, whatever, he didn't want to involve himself further with the two people's problems because it was evident that the previous one had almost caused him harm.

Meanwhile, Eve was busy studying the various files before her and needed more time to pay attention to what Ms. Jenni was worried about. She didn't even know that her boss was thinking of ways to get Eve into trouble, as their boss had ordered.

"Ah, just let Eve do her work first. Even the task I'm giving her right now already seems hard for her," Ms. Jenny said.

She saw Eve's somber expression, indicating she was trying to learn her next daily task.

"Yes, Ms. Jenny?" Eve suddenly asked as she turned her head and saw the manager looking at her intensely but with her mind drifting somewhere.

Startled, Ms. Jenny quickly turned the situation around by saying casually, "Any difficulties? You can ask questions or perhaps interrupt anything, Eve."

"It's safe for now, ma'am. I hope I can get to grips with all these files, although there are some I've just got my hands on today," Eve replied. She chose to be honest because she didn't learn that much.

Ms. Jenny smiled. "I don't expect you to master everything either. It's just an overview. So that you know the ins and outs of your job later."

What she heard, of course, relieved Eve tremendously. She stressed out thinking about having to master all that in her internship time.

"Oh, thank goodness, ma'am. You should know it's a great relief for me," Eve gratefully said.

"Ah, yes, I heard you've gotten to know Mr. Gery. Is that right?" asked Ms. Jenny cautiously. She was curious to know if Eve knew about Mr. Gery, who aimed to get the company's energetic and intelligent young girl fired as soon as possible.

Eve hesitated for a moment before answering, "Not really, ma'am. We only met once before I started working here and knew that he, unfortunately, was the owner of Vinestra."

"I see... you seem to regret that. Did something happen?"

"Just a small misunderstanding, but he made a big deal out of it, ma'am. And even felt he had the right to fire me because of it. Oh, I'll stick it out no matter what! I won't let her ruin my dreams and hard work to get into this company. Well, although, of course, I'll also look for a better job since being subordinate to the CEO doesn't seem good for me."

When she said that, Eve's expression made it clear to Ms. Jenny that the girl seemed to regret it. It was clear they were involved in serious business, Ms. Jenny thought then. More than that, she did not want to interfere. She suddenly felt sorry that Eve was unlikely to last long in Vinestra because her boss was about to fire her in various ways. Oh my! The world is sometimes that unfair. And to make matters worse, she had to participate in the injustice!
