Chapter 2

I was summoned by Lucian to his room. Jennifer followed me up, she stopped at the door. I entered alone, seeing Lucian seated on a chair with a glass of red wine in his hand. He placed it down and stood up the moment he saw me. I wore a straight face, moving to him.

“Welcome, sweetheart,” he greeted, air-kissing me. “How are you doing?” he asked, scanning my eyes.

“You summoned me, what for?” I queried. He smiled, walking around me. He stood behind me, I could feel his breath raising the hair behind the back of my neck.

“I want you, sweetheart,” he said in a low tone that filled butterflies in my stomach. I turned around and faced him.

“Quit the pretense, Lucian,” I sneered, glaring into his eyes. “You and I know we can never be together. We are better off as enemies. If you have forgotten so soon, I haven’t. You mistreated me, your mother killed my mother, you made a rogue defile me while you watch. Tsk! If I decide to list the many times you made me face punishment for what I didn’t do, you will know that nothing in this world will ever make me love you. Stop seeing me as your Luna, we rejected each other already. Not even in a dream will I accept you back. Never!” I poured out boldly. He stood silent for a moment. He turned around and faced me again. He held my hand, gently squeezing them.

“Come on, Muriel, you should forget the past already, I will make it up to you,” he declared. “All those things I did happened because I didn’t know you were my mate, I’m sorry.”

“Lies!” I groaned and jerked my hands from him. “Look into my eyes and tell me you never knew I was your mate before you made a rogue defile me? No, come on, lie even more,” I confronted, intensifying the angry look in my eyes. “You knew I was your mate, Lucian. You knew I was your mate since you were eighteen years. For four solid years, you never bothered to show me some love, not because of anything, but because you discovered I was your mate. Instead, you made my life even more miserable. If I’m given the chance, I will reject you over and over again,” I poured out, glaring at him. He sighed.

“Yes, Muriel, I knew,” he confessed. “I knew you were my mate and I was so stupid to have held on to our enmity. I regret all my actions, I’m sorry. Give me a chance to make it up to you, please,” he begged. He cupped my face in his hands. “I am ready to be the man you want me to be. I love you, Muriel, please,” he declared. He buried his face in the crook of my neck. I closed my eyes, feeling his hot breath fan over my neck. “Huh?” he sounded and I pushed him away from me. His canine has elongated, he was going to mark me deceitfully. “What’s that?” he asked, pointing at the spot where Russell marked me. I covered it with my hand.

“It’s none of your business,” I declared and hurried out.

At night, Russell came to me again. I was fully awake then, just staring into space. When he appeared, my spirit lifted, excitement filled my heart and I became lively. He kissed me passionately as ever and sat down on the bed with me.

“What’s bothering you this time?” he asked. I smiled sadly.

“It’s nothing,” I declared and rested my head on his shoulder.

“Why then are you sad?” he asked, playing with my hair. Concern filled his voice. He was worried about me, I know.

“Do you mind hearing my story?” I asked. I wanted to unburden my heart a little. How Lucian has been mistreating me since childhood. Our hatred wasn’t a new thing. It was like the very reason we were born; to hate each other. And for Lucian to use his position as the Alpha’s son to ruin my life.

“I would love to hear it, beauty,” he accepted and I smiled.

“It all began many years ago…” I started and continued in flashback.

***

I was a young, vibrant, and beautiful girl living in Bluemoon pack. My beauty was a center of attraction to all the male wolves in the pack. Even the females wished they were as beautiful as I was. I felt on top of the world. I was the only Omega with jet-black, waist-length, wavy hair that falls silkily behind me. I got golden, mixed with blue, sparkling eyes. They shone like a flaming fire in contrast with the deep blue sea. I almost feared my eyes. I bet that was what attracted them. My mother used to say my eyes were magical. They could attract even demons. I feared that part. I wish never to attract a demon with my special eyes.

Everyone knew the Omegas were the weakest of all wolves. They were meant to be the trash of everyone. I was the privileged one. Though having lost my parents at a tender age, everyone in the pack loved me, including Alpha Desmond. Alpha Desmond was like a father to me. He treated me differently from others. He never saw me as an Omega. Maybe because I was still young or maybe something was amiss. Or possibly my special eyes attracted him too. I mostly chuckle at the thought. Alpha Desmond stood as a pillar of protection between me and his son, my enemy, Lucian Logan. I hated that name for whatever it was created for. I always get a pang in my heart whenever I thought of him taking over as the Alpha. What would my life be like then? Will I ever get protection from anyone else? The Luna, Luna Glenda, wasn’t even helping matters. She always takes sides with her son. I wonder why I think I deserved to be loved like I was a higher rank wolf or something. I just hope to find my mate in the nearest future, I pray he comes from another pack, so Lucian wouldn’t have the privilege to mistreat me once he becomes the Alpha. The wish always makes me smile to myself and say, “You will be a special Luna.”

It was all because of Lucian Logan. Most times I wish to just disappear from the pack never to set eyes on that cruel soul ever again. Or possibly my mate should show up soon and take me away. Niamh will prance and dance in joy whenever I think of it. But that wouldn’t be possible till my eighteenth birthday. That was a custom in our pack. Or maybe that was how the Moon Goddess wanted it to be. All the pack members get to know their mates after their eighteenth birthday. Does that exist? Every wolf should get to know their mate at any point in their life, right? What has eighteen gotten to do with anything? That means I wouldn’t be able to recognize my mate till my eighteenth birthday. Gosh. That’s going to be ten years from now.

Time for class. Theta Irene was our teacher. We, the young wolves go to her for lessons most times. I was privileged to attend because Alpha Desmond wanted me to be educated. I simply couldn’t wait to go to senior school, it’s more fun and lively there. I held the edge of my flared gown, running along the hallway that had two sections leading to right and left. The right leads directly to the major rooms in the pack, the Alpha, the Luna, and other important wolves in the pack. I turned to the left, pacing up my steps. Lost in my stupid thought, I was late. I wished I had worn a pair of jeans and a shirt in place of the stupid royal-like gown I was putting on. As I hurried into the class, I fell on my knees, my hands supporting my body up on the floor. “Ouch!” I cried out. Other pupils laughed. I looked behind me and saw Lucian. I scowled at him, I knew someone was behind my fall. He was leaning against the wall at the entrance with crossed arms. That little freak. I cursed under my breath.

“Omegas are never fit with us,” Lucian mocked, stood straight from the wall, and headed to his seat. Obviously. I was the only Omega in the class because of Alpha Desmond. Others were kids of those related to a higher rank, never Omegas. The Gamma’s kid, the Zeta’s, the Epsilon, and the Beta’s. I sighed, calmed angry Niamh down, and stood up. I stride to my seat which was beside Lucian. The whole lesson stuff was to irritate me, get Niamh on a furious edge, and confine me in a choking seat with Lucian. I couldn’t change my seat because all seats were occupied and it has to be two on a seat. I glimpsed at Lucian, he still got that wicked smirk across his face. I opened my locker to bring out my mathematics textbook. It wasn’t there. I shoved my hand further into the locker and ran my hands around in it, my mathematics textbook wasn’t just in it. I brought out my other books, no mathematics.

“Looking for something? “ I heard the teasing voice of Lucian next to my ear in a whisper. I turned angry red eyes at him, and he snickered.

“Did you take my mathematics textbook?” I queried in a hushed tone.

“I thought you saw me burning it to ashes in the morning,” he said, the evil smile still not fading from his face.

“My book?” I chuckled. “You burnt my book?” I asked, now in a serious tone.

“No class for you, little Omega,” he mocked, furrowing his eyebrows in a silly way.

“You honestly burnt my book?” I shrieked, standing up. All eyes are now on us. He laughed. “I am going to kill you!” I groaned between clenched teeth, grabbing his shirt, and pulling him closer to me. Just then, the teacher came in.

“What’s going on here?” she asked, staring at us.

“He burnt my mathematics textbook, Mrs Adams,” I reported, my eyes threatening to tear up but I blinked it away.

“Did you do it, Lucian?” Mrs. Adams pierced her eyes into Lucian’s to get an answer. Lucian was the Alpha’s son, no one talks to him rudely. Not because they were scared of Alpha Desmond but because they feared Luna Glenda.

“How can I, Mrs Adams? She left her textbook at home just to accuse me like she’s doing now,” Lucian defended.

“Why would I want to do…”

“Let him be, Muriel,” Mrs Adams cut in. “You should go home and look for your textbook. You have automatically missed class for today.”

I was still holding Lucian’s shirt. I pushed Lucian down on the seat and scuttled out. My courage failed me and my tears came running down my cheeks. I leaned to the wall and slid down in hot tears. I have never missed class before. I was certain my book wasn’t at home. That means I would be missing mathematics class till I get another book. My guardian, Harley, just got me the textbook, I couldn’t go tell her it’s missing, she’s going to yell at me. She was a hothead, she was Luna Glenda’s sister. She lost her mate in a war alongside my father a few years ago. Since then, Alpha Desmond entrusted me with her care. I decided to run out. On my way, I bumped into Alpha Desmond.

“I…I…I’m sorry,” I stuttered in fear as I moved back, looking down to the floor.

“What happened, dear? Why are you crying?” he asked, stepping toward me and placing his hand on my shoulder. I shook my head. “Talk to me. What’s the matter?” he asked again, his voice tender and soft that it drew out my fears, instilling a sign of open-up courage in me.

“Lucian burnt my mathematics textbook. Mrs. Adams said I have missed class because of that,” I sobbed.

“Lucian?” Alpha Desmond mumbled between gritted teeth. I have never reported Lucian to him before, he always gets to know what he did to me, but now I wonder what he was going to do. “Don’t worry, dear, I will get you another book and you will return to class tomorrow, okay?” he pacified. I nodded then sniffed. I went away afterward.
