Not a Monster

Chapter 2: You're Not a Monster

Justine, my best friend, flashes to the rescue. He wraps his arms around me before my butt reaches the tiled floor. "I am supposed to be the one telling you that, Danica. Alpha Damien was not in his place when I got there. I failed you. And I'm so sorry for that. Please, forgive me."

We stayed in our spots and positions like our movements were in slow motion. Our eyes met for about ten seconds. Long enough that my wolf managed to sense the sincerity and purity of his voice and stares.

The sensation of the scenario was similar to those romantic kdrama movies I watched on screens. Everything stopped ticking apart from the rumbling sounds of our heartbeats combined.

Our heartbeats were in a race to reach the finish line.

A part of me wanted to tell him everything - the truth to be precise. To seek his piece of advice on what I must do to get the hell out of this kind of impossible situation.

However, my wolf is more scared that once he knows the truth, Alpha Damien might threaten him as well. Or worse, kill him just like they told me about exposing the truth that they have a son with autism and bipolar disorder.

I cannot afford for my best friend to get killed because my conscience recklessly told him about Alpha Damien and Lady Divina's secret.

On top of that, my wolf is more dedicated to love and mate no one apart from Justine, not someone with brain and personal malfunctions.

"Alpha Damien and Lady Divina visited the house earlier and promised to give my parents a second chance. They promised to release them from being locked up by tomorrow morning." I replied it was the least I could tell him at the moment.

Justine's face brightened all of a sudden, "Isn't that a good thing?" he asked right after cracking up the corner of his lips, then he let go of me. "Congratulations, Danica! You scared the hell out of me when you drop your butt on the floor, don't you think?"

I smiled back at Justine to hide everything that happened in the house earlier. And for him to stop nagging me. My wolf already decided to get to the bottom of this mess and meet this man named, Christopher Silvia.

"Ah, this one? It's tears of joy," I humorously replied, "Why? Is there any rule that I can't cry my heart out because I am happy that my parents were given their second chance to live?" Then I gently rubbed his smooth and shiny curly black hair like I always do to him.

Justine extended his smile from ear to ear, and I started to sense his nerves calming. "You, silly," he teases, "You know that I cannot afford to see my best friend getting hurt, remember?"

"I have a huge favor to ask you, Justine." My voice began to get serious, and I believe he sensed it too. "I want you to find the right female wolf for you. Mate her. Love and protect her just like the way you did to me. Can you do that?"

He digs deeper into my eyes, trying to read what was running through my mind. Nevertheless, all he could see from those eyes was utter regret, pain, and remorse.

My wolf already set aside all the positive things about me; feelings such as my love for him, overflowing happiness that I was given a chance to have someone to lean on, and excitement every time he nags, teases, and makes me angry.

In order to have a better life, I must put those beautiful things behind me and fill them with nothing but greediness, revenge, and regrets.

After hearing Justine's response, we separated ways. He went home and I found myself lying on the bed again. Still lost in thoughts and am trying to convince myself if my wolf did the right thing or not.

The next day, I did not get the chance to see my parents stepping foot into the house. As early as before sunrise, Alpha Damien's twenty werewolf commanders transported me to someplace without anyone knowing, including Justine.

An hour later, I found myself standing alone with a huge luggage bag in an unfamiliar human village and met an old couple who adopted Christopher. Their names are Felicidad and Anecito.

The reason Alpha Damien and Lady Divina let their son be attended by old humans instead of a werewolf is because they believe he cannot access his werewolf abilities due to his awful condition.

And my first mission is to help someone with autism and bipolar disorder to achieve those werewolf abilities one by one with the utmost confidentiality. Mating him was also part of the job.

"If you still have your second thoughts on this matter, young woman, better decide now. We are not going to stop you if you want to run away." Felicidad heaved an abrupt sigh. "Keeping an eye on someone with autism is a hell of a job."

"We are not scaring you, Danica. You are still young to make your life a mess. Go to school. Play with your friends. Fall in love and get your heart broken with a lot of young and handsome men." her husband continued, "Because if you decided to choose this path, you'd certainly have endless nightmares."

Their concerning piece of advice cut deeper into my heart, body, mind, and even in my soul. Both of them were supposed to be humans but they still sense the doubts all over my face.

Indeed I still have second thoughts about the decision that I committed. The truth is, worries and fears also bother me. It started when they offer me this ridiculous proposal.

But my entire life was not gifted with a choice. The last thing my wolf wants to transpire is for my parents to get killed because I choose to follow what I think was reasonable and just.

"So we were right then," Anecito shattered off my profound thoughts. "Well, I cannot blame you to feel that way. After all, you are the twentieth nanny who was hired this month."

I could not help but gulp in disbelief when my ears stiffened after hearing that confession. Several questions started running wild all over my brain. Twenty nannies in just a month? Could that even be possible?

What happens to his previous nannies then? As far as I could not remember, neither Alpha Damien nor Lady Divina told me about it.

They only told me that Christopher have no idea about his real identity because of his disorder. And that they met him once since he got adopted.

Hiring me as his nanny would be the only way possible they could get updates about their son, considering humans and werewolves are mortal enemies.

Let alone their enemies are all over the place. A single mistake about their secret might be their downfall as well. My family and Justine's lives depend on me.

"Did my parents hire a new nanny again?" a man's cracking voice suddenly echoed in my ears from behind me. "I already told you that I am not a kid anymore. Why were the two of you so hard-headed, huh?"

Felicidad quickly moves out of her seat and runs towards the man behind me. "Come on, honey, we already told you that your parents are already old to keep an eye on you..."

As she started explaining, I slightly adjusted my body and turned my head around. There, right behind me landed right in front of my eyes this young and good-looking guy.

My heightened senses perceived his eyes were blazing in a rage but, at some point, I find his charm somehow compelling. If I am not mistaken, Christopher Silvia could have stood taller similar to Justine.

They even have the same double eyelids, and muscular physique that is evident in their sharp jawline, broad shoulders, toned arms, and chest which I like the most from a guy.

Their similarities do not end there. Christopher had high cheekbones, defined eyebrows, and captivating almond-shaped eyes. And so is Justine.

At first glance, you say that they were twin brothers. I mean my wolf no longer gets surprised if Alpha Damien and Lady Divina could have another secret they haven't told the entire pack.

The only difference between them is that Christopher had fair white skin, a piece of evidence that he didn't do any heavy work his whole life while Justine had lightly brown which made him more unique among the male wolves in the pack.

"Are you really my new nanny?" Christopher throws the question at me, this time, I just noticed his first symptoms - rolling his eyes three hundred sixty degrees, trying to avoid getting eye-to-eye contact with me.

For that same reason, all my expectations and assumptions about him dropped to nothing. This man in front of me indeed needs to get checked up by expert doctors. I was about to say something but Christopher flashed to the doorway and began screaming for help.

He kept on screaming and claiming that he sometimes turned into a doglike monster with reddish-brown eyes, and sharp claws and fangs, but no one listened to him.

His inconsiderate actions started to bother me when all the humans he could pass through started running away from him and treated him like a real monster.

Most of the werewolves, particularly in our age, are not experts in controlling their anger issues yet. And it was one of the main reasons that most of us failed to control our shift and let the beast inside us dominate our human side.

In Christopher's case, I highly doubt he had patience left inside his human body. His overwhelming emotions, anger, regrets, and the urge to kill, give me goosebumps while tailing him off from behind.

While looking at how slow Anecito and Felicidad while chasing Christopher, they could have ended up draining off the air in their lungs before one of them reaches their adopted son.

Leaving no choice, I tripled my speed and followed Christopher down to the public market with a bunch of innocent humans wandering the streets. A few minutes later, my wolf started hearing boisterous screaming from the humans and continuous gunshots.

It was also the time when I realized we are no longer chasing a good-looking young man with a brain disorder but a furious and hungry wolf. He shifted earlier than I expected.

And it terribly worries me that my parents and Justine might end up getting killed for me failing a simple assignment. As soon as I reached the public market, my eyes dilated upon seeing two wounded humans lying on the ground unconscious.

Lots of blood surged through the area.

"Stay away from me," a cracking voice echoed in my ears coming from behind piled sacks filled with fruits and vegetables. "I am scared that I might kill you as well." he continued, "I am a monster but no one listens to me..."

As he kept on talking, my wolf could not help but sense the utter regret in his voice. Every fiber in his muscles was trembling while hiding behind those piled sacks.

"I said stay away from me!" he growled this time upon hearing my footsteps approaching.

"Relax, Christopher. I believe in you, okay? Take a deep breath." I replied, my voice remained steady, not to scare him.

"You're lying," he yelled. "Everyone has been lying to me. They said the same thing that they believe in me, but the monster inside me knows they're lying. Stay away from me before I could kill you too."

A part of me wanted to stay away from him but I know it was not an option considering my situation. So I gently lifted my feet toward his spot.

There, right in front of my eyes was a terribly scared naked man with his arms wrapped around his knees, he was sobbing "Look me in the eye, Christopher." I continued. "I have something to show you. Promise, I'll stay away from you once you can see it."

At first, Christopher was hesitant to lift his eyes toward me. But after minutes of talking to him with my voice calm, his eyes dilated when I glowed my eyes right in front of him.

"I'm a werewolf just like you. But we're not monsters. You're not a monster, Christopher. You are someone with serious Autism Spectrum Disorder."
