Chapter 4

It's been days since Jewel ran out of Liam's office but she still couldn't get what had happened out of her head.

How is it possible that Liam Ledger was now Liam Armstrong? Also, he now had a fiance.

Liam Ledger. That name used to make her heart beat faster. She used to have a crush on him, until that night.

After they had spent the night together, she wanted to act like nothing happened and it worked but just for a month.

She found out she was pregnant, she had been very scared but she knew she couldn't go through that alone, so she went up to the Ledger mansion.

On getting there, she had asked to see Liam but was told that wouldn't be possible, when she asked why, she was told he had left the state to further his education.

She couldn't believe it, tears streaking down her cheeks, she tried calling him but his number wasn't reachable.

At 19, she was pregnant and had to drop out of college, fortunately, her mother was very understanding.

Ever since then, she has been struggling to take care of herself and her son.

She held a grudge against Liam, she knew she was the one who had suggested they act like nothing happened but she did not expect him to leave without telling her, his action made her feel like their friendship meant nothing to him.

Looking at her son who was sleeping soundly in the bed, she realized he looked very much like Liam, they had the same eyes and blonde hair.

She had been taking care of Joel for 5 years, she didn't need Liam. He had no right to be a part of her son's life.

She was about to go and prepare dinner when her phone rang, picking it up, she realized the number calling wasn't saved in her phone but she decided to answer.

"Hello" she said

"Hello Jewel" the person on the other end of the phone replied.

She recognized the voice, "Liam, hi, this is a surprise", she said. She wanted to ask how he got her number but realized that would sound stupid, she had applied at his company, he had her details.

"I'm sorry if I called at a bad time, I'll just go straight to the point. I wanted to tell you that you can have the job, that's if you still want it" Liam said.

She couldn't believe what he just said, of course she wanted the job, in fact she needed the job, but she didn't want him employing her out of pity.

"Liam, you don't have to do this, we both know I'm not qualified for the job". She said

"Jewel, I wouldn't be calling right now if I didn't think you could do it. The relationship between a boss and his personal assistant has to be a comfortable one.

I've interviewed others, but among them all, you're the only one who wasn't trying to impress me, you acted naturally and that's the kind of atmosphere I need" He said

Could she really do it? She was still mad at him for what happened. Could she learn to put the past behind her? What if he found out about their son?

"Hello, Jewel, are you still there?" Liam asked after he didn't get a response.

"I'm here", she answered.

"So what do you say? Are you in?" Liam asked, his voice sounding hopeful.

Deciding to think about her son and what's best for him "I'm in" she answered

Releasing a sigh he had been holding "Alright then, I'll see you on Monday" Liam responded

"And Jewel, don't be late" with that, he ended the call.

Jewel couldn't help but smile, for once, the future seemed bright. She couldn't wait for Monday.

"What am I going to do?". Jewel asked, her voice laced with worry and frustration.

"I'm so sorry dear, I really wish I could help look after Joel, but I can barely look out for myself". Her mother replied over the phone.

It was Monday and Jewel's first day working as Liam's personal assistant. She had called to ask her mother to watch over Joel, unfortunately, her mother wasn't feeling strong enough to do that.

"How about you just take him with you, dear? What's the worst thing that could happen?". Catherine asked

"Oh! Liam would ask me a million questions and I'll probably cause a rift between him and his fiance". Jewel wanted to say, instead, she replied, "Liam didn't plan for this, I can't just spring it on him".

"Well, I don't recall you ever planning to become a mother at 19. Also, you had to drop out of college, to the best of my knowledge, you didn't plan for that as well but you handled it well". Catherine said

"This is different mom. Also, I'm not sure I'm ready to tell him". Jewel replied

"Alright dear. Do whatever you're comfortable with. Once again, I'm sorry for not being able to assist you" her mother responded

"It's okay, mum. Take care of yourself and I'll see you soon. I love you."Jewel said and hung up.

She could not afford to pay a babysitter, also, her neighbor Mrs Henderson wasn't around to help her, looks like she had no choice but to take him with her.

Walking into Armstrong headquarters with her son felt surreal.

Jewel had intentionally come really early. Her plan was simple. She would ask Liam's secretary to take Joel into an office where Liam wouldn't enter and at the close of work, she would make sure he leaves first before she goes to pick him.

However, the moment she arrived at the tenth floor, she met face to face with Liam.

"Liam" she muttered

"Hello Jewel" he replied, a smile on his face.

However, he quickly noticed the little boy with her and his smile disappeared.

Liam was staring into a pair of sea green eyes. Eyes which looked exactly like his.
