Chapter 2

Ethan

I had known that I would find her in the cemetery, she had made it a ritual to celebrate her birthday there.

My flight had just landed in New York and I was a bit skeptical about going to see Kim, it’s been a whole year and three months since I left her, in my defense I had a lot of work and I needed her to be safe, staying around her will only make it known that I was her guardian.

I had watched her grow into this young beautiful lady that she is and seeing her all dressed in a black slim-fit dress that showcased her beautiful curves only reminds me of the major reason why I left.

She turned and I watched her jaw drop, she was surprised to see me and I knew she wanted to run to me and hug me, I watched her ball her fist trying to avoid running to me.

I did think that even if she didn’t run to me, she’d walk up to me and hug me but that was to my greatest imagination as she walked out of the cemetery and got into her car. The nerve of the driver to drive her.

Now she was down with me and now I know how much damage leaving her had caused.

I should have stayed with her, but I couldn’t.

I could sense the anger in her voice, she’d truly been hurt by my disappearance.

I held her and pinned her to the wall so she could at least listen to me.

“If you can give me this chance to show you that I love you so much and would never leave you because you mean the world to me.” She calmed down a bit and stopped shouting, I watched her brown eyes stare deep into my eyes, pain was evident in her eyes.

“I didn’t abandon you, I left for a reason.”

“Okay fine, why didn’t you call all these while, why didn’t you try to talk to me?” She bit her lips slightly and tears dropped from her eyes.

“Tell me.” I slowly loosened my grip on her as I thought of what to tell her.

“It was for your safety.”

“What safety?” She pushed me away and I let her.

“There are some things that are best left as secrets, Kim. I’m here now and that’s all that matters, let me make it up to you.” My voice was low as I tried to hold her hand but she pulled her hand away.

“No, if it’s a secret then you’re not ready to make it work. You don’t know how much I wanted you to be at home, how many times I cried myself to sleep because you were gone and I had no one. I was a stupid person to think you loved me.” I could hear from the sound of her voice that she wanted to cry but she was holding it in.

“I’m sorry, Kim.” I mouthed.

“No, you’re not.” She mouthed before waking out, I watched her climb the stairs and she headed up to her room.

How do I explain to her that there was a reason why I left, a reason that I’d keep to myself? Her safety has long been my priority even before the sad demise of my best friend’s family.

Maybe if I hadn’t taken Kim out that day without Noah’s knowledge, she would have been involved in the accident and I would have lost her.

It was Kim’s birthday and even though I knew that I and her father were not on good terms, I had promised to get her ice cream on her birthday and I took her out. Noah, my best friend, was looking for her, he and his wife with their newborn son had gone out to look for her and they were ambushed.

I know that it was not an accident, Kim’s family didn’t have an accident like the authorities had said it was all planned and now that Kim is here with me, in my custody, I know that she’s in great danger, she’s always been in great danger and she being alongside with me will only cause her to be in more danger.

To Kim, her family had an accident and the person that caused the accident could not be found but to me, my best friend’s family was ambushed.

To Kim, she’s the owner of different companies run by different people but to me, she’s the key to a world of wealth which a lot of people seek.

To her, I’m the CEO of the biggest car company in New York but to me, I am the boss of an underworld, a Mafia boss and I will not let my little sunshine get hurt.

My phone rang out loud and immediately took it out of my pocket to check who it was, it was Axel.

“What is the matter, Axel,” I asked knowing that he’d only call me if there was a problem.

“The warehouse was robbed, and a few of our men were killed in the attack. “

“Fuck! How many men were killed?”

“Four, boss.”

“Take a count of what was taken from us and tell Phil that I want him to start an investigation, no one touches what belongs to me.”

“Yes, Boss.”

“As for the men killed, please contact their family, you know what to do,” I explained to him.

I was still in the dining area so I just made a swift call to the maid.

Jovani cleared the table while I spoke to Kim’s Nanny.

“I’ll be back next tomorrow, something important happened, don’t let Kim out of your sight, and don’t let her leave the house. I’ll be back.”

“Sure thing sir.” She lowered her head a bit and I nodded before storming out of the house. I was going to find out who had done this and when I do, it’s over for them.

I stormed out of the house, got into the car and drove off.
