It’s a breezy night making sand whip around, and the smell of the saltwater ocean is crisp on my senses. I look around to make sure no one is following us. They can’t track me by scent as I have none. Seeing it all clear, I’m satisfied I can pause for a minute to rest. With the cover of a gigantic tree, I prop against the trunk. I glance at the body draped over my shoulder, shifting it into my arms and cradling it close. I can hear a fog horn in the distance and know my ship is on the horizon. "A sentry warrior will be placed at each entryway of the clan house and along the border every hundred feet as the clans arrive. Kimarhi Life as Queen has its simple joys. I retired for a hot bath after the spar. I strip out of my dirty clothes and slide into the boiling bath. I massage my body, getting to the aching muscles. I growl, letting the day steam off. Feeling heavy from the heat, I start to relax. Although bruised a bit, it’s a good pain. Shifters heal faster than humans, but it’s not instantaneous. Depending on the wound, you may need help from a healer to quicken the process. My minor injuries would be gone by this evening or in the morning. I have a decent bruise on my shoulder from the wall, and my ankle hurts from laying a hit wrong. I’ll have to work on that double-header kick. There’s a knot from head-butting someone, and my knuckles are in bad shape. All that aside, I love feeling the battle after. The pain of victory is always sweet. Kimarhi In the morning, I wake with the sun shooting into my eyes. My head at the foot of my bed, and my legs hugging my pillow. Rolling over to escape the harsh light, I plop off the bed. Covers on the floor cushion my fall, and I sluggishly crawl over to shut the curtains. “Who opened you?” I snarl out at the window. How did I get here? Not remembering the night, I must’ve been drunker than I thought. Stretching out as far as my muscles will go, I get up to shower. I’m still sore from yesterday, but no physical evidence remains. Oddly, the soreness would stay. Reaching to turn on the hot water, it wakes my body, but my mind lags. Switching too cold for a minute, making my mind startles the rest of me into consciousness. “Candidates!” Theo yells in human form, motioning for them to gather. After stretching, all the Candidates line up in their proper groups, with enough space to move. Everyone quietly looks to Theo and me for their next set of instructions. “First, we lap the perimeter as a warmup,” he circles the map on display. “Then we team up here to capture the flag!” I point to the wooded area just beyond the arena. “Take down your opponent to stun. The flag is the kill.” He concludes. “Yes, sir!” Shout the candidates in unison. “Then let us begin,” Theo blows his whistle again, and everyone disrobes, then goes down on one knee when finished. “And you may shift!” Theo yells once everyone is ready. The candidates start to transform with some cries of agony. The sound is almost deafening as bones are breaking and resetting. You can hear the skin pull as their bodies stretch onto all fours. Reaching the arena, I am drawn to watch Magnus shift back to human. His lion form is beautiful. Slender golden brown with its flat mane to match, not darkened by age yet. After his stunning display, I’m craving his human body now. Magnus shifts back to human form while I watch. His muscular body flexes while he puts on just his shorts. He throws the shirt over his shoulder. He’s sweaty all over, and I can smell him. Not bad at all, almost like chocolate. Magnus heads to the water coolers, talking to a teammate. Then he goes to the shower room, near the hall from our first meeting. I whimper as he leaves my view, hoping no one heard that. A new burn under my skin forms as my body shifts back. Cracking and popping, I stretch once more as the transformation finishes. On all fours, I lean back on my knees and rise, grabbing my clothes and quickly dressing.
