Chapter 4

Octavia POV

It has been an hour since I ran, and I have just been wandering around. I feel lifeless and empty. Why is my life so horrible? What did I do to deserve this? I didn’t kill those people intentionally. My father died, and I was sad about it. I don’t even expect that strange power; It just happened. I was just a kid, but those people maltreated me, abused me, starved me, made me do all their chores, called me names, and laughed at me, and now my best friend and my mate mated. She is not even my best friend. She is my ex-best friend, and he is my ex mate. I laugh humorlessly. No matter what they did to me, I still had hoped he would notice me, and I was ready to forgive if he apologized, but then he got her pregnant. All hope is lost. I have no one to call my own, not even a wolf. My life is so pathetic.

I felt salty water on my lips. Then I realized I was crying. I cried more, and I felt so useless and pathetic. I saw a pond. The water is so clear and shining. I entered the water. I felt at peace. Water always helps me to cool down. I love being in the water. The water was not deep, so I walked to the other end. Then I bent down inside the water, head deep. It soaked me up. I might as well die of cold, I thought to myself, coming out of the pond.

I continue on my journey that has no destination. We are in the afternoon of late January, so things are still a bit cold. Then I heard a growl. I stopped in my tracks. Wolves! I know there is more than one because of the loud vibrations. Oh, my goddess, they are targeting me! With that information, I started running with all my strength. But you can never outrun an angry wolf. A wolf came by my side and collided into me. I fell, rolling on the floor. I looked up. It was three wolves. They were radiating power. The bigger one is a black wolf. He must be an Alpha or Beta. Two of the wolves are the same size. The left one is blonde, and the right one is brown. They all look vicious, with their canines outstretched and sharp. I sat on the floor and started moving backward. They stalk towards me, snarling. As I close my eyes, I guess this is the end of the road for me.

“Alpha, we got a scent on the border,” one of my warriors’ mind linked me—a scent? It has been a long time since we got a scent. We have been free of rogue for a long time, so how dare this rogue pass my territory?

“A rogue?” I asked.

“Yes, Alpha,” he replied.

“Watch the rogue; I am on my way,” I said, shifting to my black wolf. How dare a rogue to pass my territory? Rogues don’t come near my territory because they don’t make it out alive. My pack is known for our viciousness and habit of slaying rogues. My pack is the biggest and most powerful in America. Many young and old Alphas have tried to take me down, but I slay them all, which expands my territory and power because if an alpha is killed, the killer gets his power and becomes the new Alpha. Lots of Alphas have stopped trying to take me down as it always ends badly for them, but it doesn’t mean I don’t have enemies.

I have many enemies trying to take me down, but I have no Luna they can use against me. If I see my Luna, I have to protect her, as people will want to use her against me. But I have been looking for my mate for years now with no luck. The pack wants me to take a mate, but I don’t want anyone apart from my mate. I grew up hearing nice things about having a mate, and I also want to experience the feeling and bond about having a mate. A lot of people think I am vicious and big, but I will be the biggest softie for my mate. My dad was the best Alpha ever, and he is so strict, but with mum, he is another wolf entirely. I always admire them and wish to be like them. The only person I will ever bow to is my mate. I got to the border and saw two of my warriors, Ivan and Austin.

“Which way did the rogue pass?” I mind link.

“This way, Alpha,” Ivan replied, pointing towards the place. I dash towards the place he pointed. Both of them shifted and followed me. I saw the rogue, and it shocked me it was a female. Since when did females pass my territory? This one has a mind. She was running, but we ran after her. I got closer to her and slammed her body, making her lose her balance. She fell. She sat on the floor, looking at us terrified, then she started moving back with us, stalking closer, snarling to intimidate her.

“Ple..please, I mean no harm. I was just passing by,” she said, shaking. I moved closer to her with my face near hers; then, suddenly, I smelt the most beautiful scent. It was a combination of strawberries and pine. The smell was addicting, and I couldn’t get enough of it. Where is that pleasant scent coming from? I sniff the air with my snout raised.

“Do any of you smell that?” I mind-linked, trying to find the scent.

“No, Alpha, we don’t,” they replied. I took a deep breath and sniffed again. The scent was coming from the shaking girl. She looked up at me and our eyes connected. Then my wolf said something I had always wanted to hear. “MATE!”

Actually I just want to finish the book that I started to begin with instead of looking at all the rest of them until I get ready to read another one. I want to finish the one
