8: The New Guard

I felt my entire body freeze the moment the words had left her lips, mostly because since I'd led a quiet life I was a stranger to adversary and criticism but it seemed to be happening to me in full force and I didn't have a chance to process most of it.

But before I'd had time to dwell any further on what she'd just rudely spat out, Alpha Arnold turned to face her sharply with a frown and a look of disbelief on his face as he did.

"Don't you ever address Layla that way, especially since I invited her to dine with me this evening and it's of no concern to you." He issued out a stern warning with his index finger pointed at her, but she barely flinched despite that.

"She's always interrupting our time together, unannounced and I blurted that out in surprise, nothing else." She rushed out a silly explanation for her actions in a tone that showed pure nonchalance rather than sincerity.
