“Why is your husband not yet here?”
“Exactly, it’s been hours and the groom is yet to arrive, she’s such a pathetic young wife.”
Gift’s palms were sweaty as she continuously spread them on the pearls of her white wedding gown. Her eyes roamed the church as she searched in between rows and the aisle for any signs of Ken.
They had an argument the night before after she asked him where he had been going every night of their vacation, but he stormed out and shouted the words, “I just don’t love you anymore.”
She knew that much, but she hoped that her love and sincerity would have reached his heart and convinced him to look at her even once, but the reminder from the pastor, “I can only wait another thirty minutes, after that, I’m sorry but i have other lovely couples to wed,” snapped her out of her thoughts.
He was clearly irritated and had a scowl similar to the one the hired faces in the crowd had.
“I’m sorry, he’ll be here soon, he probably just got caught in traffic,” she apologized again with a small smile as she stared right at the door.
“I’ll try calling again,” she ran to her purse, but she knew he couldn’t pick up since he had left his phone in a haste when he left, but she dialed anyways, she dialed his drinking buddies numbers but none of them picked up and in no time, her thirty minutes were over.
Suppressing her panic as she patted her belly, she paid off the guests and returned the wedding dress she had rented.
“Wish you a happy married life, where is the honeymoon?” the attendant asked, but the most she could manage was a small smile as she hurried through the process of everything and returned to their hotel room.
She fell back to her bed as she sniffled her tears back and asked herself, “where did I go wrong?” But no matter how hard and far she thought, she couldn’t give herself an answer.
Just then, her phone rang, bringing her out of her daze as she hurried to drink some water and wash her face.
“Hmm hmm,” she cleared her throat and picked up the call with a cheery face “hey bestiee,”she squealed and giggled like she hadn’t just cried over her failed life.
“Hey,” the voice wasn’t so welcoming, but she still smiled, glad that there was someone to talk to now that she was down.
“So, why did you call? Did you miss me so much?” Gift asked as she made a request to switch to video call, but it was declined until the third time when she saw her bestfriend’s flushed face.
“Miss you when I’m literally in the next room?” Trisia scoffed as she sat up and wrapped the thick duvet around herself, but didn’t try to hide the hickeys on her neck and chest.
“What do you mean? You don’t even know where I am,” Gift teased, but noticed that her bestie’s eyes were unusually cold and menacing, but a look around her bestie’s room revealed a similar design to hers.
“I’ll show you,” Trisia switched the recording side to the back and showed Gift the back of a man.
Gift cocked her head, mentally congratulating her innocent virgin friend for finally having a man, but when she was about to voice it, the man turned with a groan and bed hair, his eyes slightly red from obvious lack of sleep.
“Who is that?” she asked and got her answer midway through the groggy guy turning.
“Babe, who are you on the call with?” he asked her best friend Trisia as he snatched the phone from her and turned it to show Gift the smug look she had on.
“What’s going on?” Gift felt herself go pale at the realization of what was happening.
“Damn it, bitch!” he immediately flung the phone away as Gift took a sharp intake of breath. She felt the pain in her belly again and rubbed it before getting up and trying to make sense out of what was going on when she heard a knock on her door. She was too anxious, thus sensitive and was in front of the door with trembling hands in no time.
The door was flung open the moment she twisted the key and two familiar faces barged in.
“It was high time you knew about us anyways,” Trisia said with her hands clinging unto Ken’s naked waist.
“But why? What’s happening Ken, we were supposed to get married today, why didn’t you show up?” she asked as she looked between the only two people she trusted in her life.
Haven grown up in the orphanage with no identity of her parents or relatives, she was forced to see the cruel part of life growing up, but she dreamt big and wanted to take herself out of the trenches, so she worked hard and was always first in her school and managed to secure a scholarship to go to college which made the orphanage proud and reluctantly let her go when she turned eighteen.
But that was one year ago, before her best friend and only person which she considered family from the orphanage guilt tripped her into giving that life up because she would have to go to Italy, a distant Country for it.
And that was when she introduced Ken to her and she fell in love at first sight.
Ken was sweet in the beginning but he began to turn hostile when Gift refused to give him her virginity but again, Trisia was there to coax her and tell her it was the only way to get a happy life and create the family that she had always craved for, so they did it once, on the night ken proposed.
Gift looked at her ring finger and turned the fragile engagement ring.
“Why?” Ken scoffed as he pulled Trisia closer by her waist, “she’s pregnant,” Gift’s eyes looked downwards, towards the bulging belly and noticed a tiny bump similar to hers.
“What?” she fell back on the bed and remembered how Trisia had congratulated her when she shared the news of her own pregnancy, “How come?”
“You poor foolish girl, turns out you are only book-smart, he was never yours to begin with. He was just some guy I met at the club when you were too depressed about rejecting that scholarship and I had him first.”
“So why are you With him now, this just makes no sense,”asides from Gift’s trusting, hardworking and persevering nature, she was also one who made decisions based on logic but at the mention of family, she had let herself get manipulated by her best friend from the orphanage .
“That’s because he just got a job at a big company and I can’t let you have anything better than me. You were always first in class and even had the guts to raise your head high and stand tall when your uniform was worn out, while I had to do odd jobs for boys in class to afford the new uniforms and never had time to read,” Trisia said dignifyingly and Ken patted her hair while whispering words of consolation.
“But I’m also pregnant,”
“Abort the child, I would rather build a family with the woman I love than with a foolish woman who wanted to trick me into a marriage just to get into my rich family.”
Gift was too stunned to defend herself and just stood in place as the pair packed a few of her clothing and threw her some wad of cash to return to the city and get an abortion.
Gift felt numb throughout the flight back to the city except for the sharp consistent pain in her lower belly which forced her to be aware of her environment. She felt cheated out of life but she had no one but herself to blame and didn’t know where to start her life from as she was down to ground zero with a baby she couldn’t hate.As the flight attendant announced that the plane would be landing soon, she looked down at her belly as she wiped her tears, “you are mine alone now and I promise to find a way to raise you well,” she smiled amidst her tears making the people beside her give her quizzical looks, all which she ignored and wiped her tears haven accepted this new life of hers. She stood tall as she dragged her box out of the airport but it was raining and she didn’t have an umbrella, nor the luxury to buy any of those expensive airport umbrellas, so she decided to wait it out. However, the rain wasn’t stopping and she had to give up and take the cab, but it had gotten lat
The surgery was a success and the mother lost her baby, but she was yet to wake up.Because of his sister insisting he had to stay up all night to sit by her side as the surgery went on without the chance to close the deals with those greedy and impatient investors who he had spent months trying to convince. He promised himself to take it out on the dumb woman and make her pay.“This is my fault. I shouldn’t have asked the driver to hurry to pick you up. His sister was back to feeling guilty but nothing he did could convince her otherwise Which made him hate that woman the more.“She will be fine and she’ll tell you it’s not your fault when she wakes up,” he said as he patted her head,” so why don’t you go take a rest at home? You need to get some sleep.”“No, I want to be here when she wakes up, so I can apologize,” she insisted and he felt his strength leave his body.Time was money and of essence to him and with every minute that passed, he was losing a lot of it.Later that eveni
Gift found the master’s bedroom and felt repulsed by the lack of decorations in the room.It was like a picture from the 90’s, all in black and white but she didn’t want to judge because she had it in her to change things and not give in to the ways of her ruthless ‘husband’ anymore, but a huge wave of shock hit her when she entered the closet and realized that there was not a single female clothing in there, she ran to the bathroom and saw how neat and devoid of anything feminine things and came to a conclusion.“I must have been really dense to have married a man like this,” she said with a huge frown as she looked at her bandaged reflection in the mirror before swiping everything on the table down and storming down the stairs.Zenith had heard the sound of things crashing, but he ignored it with a smirk, thinking that she must have fallen from feeling dizzy, but what he didn’t expect was that she was right in front of him the next minute and had wordlessly slammed his computer shut
For the first time in a long time, Zenith had a good night's rest and not only that, he didn't use his medication. Because of his sister and his investment in work, he never had a relationship except for the one time he had a crush on his middle school teacher and this had made his father worried for such a long time that he told Zenith he would accept him even though he was gay. Just as long as he had a life partner. That was why when Mr Kim came in for his regular surprise visit and snuck up on his adult son to scream ‘peekaboo’ in his ears that morning, but found the strange scene, he froze and tiptoed back to ask Olivia what had happened. Olivia told him the full story but he only digested the part that favored him and that was that his son had a woman who could handle him. “Are you sure she real had amnesia and wasn't pretending?” The father and daughter pair were whispering in each others ears as they leaned on the door of Zenith's room and watched him sleep with Gift in hi
He was angry at this situation that was beyond his control and if there was anything he hated more than fake people who took advantage of others like the way he misunderstood Gift's situation, it would be things getting out of his control. And what made his anger more intense was the fact that both were related to the same woman. He banged his hand on the table as his stomach grumbled. Hungry and unfocused, but he didn't have an appetite for anything, not when he dreamt about the food she had cooked the night before and how he wanted more of it. He pushed his leather chair back and told himself that he was going to check up on her once but just before he approached the door, it was pushed open and a bandaged figure appeared in front of him. .Zenith who always prided himself in being able to stand firm in front of adversities panicked. His heart shook that he stepped backwards with each step that she took towards him. “W..what do you want?” He asked himself when his tall back co
When he didn't reply, she took it as him understanding her predicament. And as his family already accepted her, Gift didn't want to upset this man who had paid her hospital bills anymore, so she didn't bother to ask him for any favors and only gave him her offer. “Here,” she placed a list on his desk, “this is a list of my qualifications, both academic and extracurricular, but to show my sincerity, I am offering myself as your cook.” “Cook?” Zenith, who had gotten lost and was looking at her as arrogant and lofty, got dragged out of him mentally scolding her when she said those words and he couldn't be more confused. “Yes, I know that you were drooling for my food yesterday and that you wanted more of it. Olivia loves it too, and since you don't have a chef at the moment, I will be your in-house chef after I recover and will not take any payment. If there is anything else you need me for, please let me know,” she said and left his home office room afterwards. And Zenith after makin
Gift felt a little nervous at the attention he was gathering to make this sudden announcement, so she closed her eyes to compose herself and clamped her hands on the table to support herself from falling over, an action she took innocently without too much thought. But to Zenith who had spent almost half of his life in the business world, that was a move that risk takers and successful tycoons made.It was a movement that he made whenever he had succeeded in acquiring a new company or winning a bid or signing a contract with an investor he proposed to. So he made a mental backtrack to find out what she had checked him on and when he found nothing, he thought she must have made a secret move. “Zenith, what's the announcement about?” Gift called out like his father had encouraged her to but the absence of a title in the way she had addressed him made him recoil even more as he tried to think about what mistake he had made in the past that made her talk to him without any respect. “Do
So while the other two woke up feeling refreshed and excited for the new weekday, Gift was the only one who walked out of her room with eyebags. She didn't get to have any eyeshutter after deciding to go with a gray five piece suit that she had chosen mainly because of its price tag in the mall.Glad that she could properly make use of it, she dragged her feet to the kitchen and made breakfast and lunch and after packaging the lunch in three different lunch bags, she cleaned up and returned to her room.It was still six am, so she decided to watch some online videos to do her eye makeup to cover her eye bags and the dark circles.By the time she was done one hour later and fully dressed, she looked very much like a young CEO with the smokey eye makeup and walking cane that added sophistication to her one in a hundred suit of its kind made in the whole world.
