"Why isn't he picking up?" She mumbled, getting worried.
Joshua always gets back home on time. This was the second time he was taking so long.
Last night he came so late. But he texted her not to cook his dinner because he’ll be late and when he arrived home, he was a little drunk and disheveled. There were nail marks on his neck which made Evelyn worried. He has never drunk before so it was weird for her to see him in this state for the first time.
This morning she asked him why he was drunk and late last night, he said he went on a date but he didn’t remember what happened after that or when he drank so much. She didn’t question him further, she was happy that he went on a date and the nail marks on his neck made her smirk. She was happy that her brother was living his life. She was even excited to meet the girl.
Three hours passed and still, there was no sign of Josh. She started to get worried as she rang Joshua's colleague. He answered on the second call.
"Who's this?" Samuel said.
"Samuel, this is Evelyn. I'm Joshua's sister," She said.
"Oh, yes. How are you, Evelyn? You're calling at this hour. Is everything alright?" He asked.
"Joshua hasn't come back home yet." She said, panicking.
"But he left on time. Maybe he has gone out to have drinks with some friends," Samuel said as Evelyn shook her head. He must’ve texted her if that was the case just like yesterday.
Joshua wasn't an irresponsible person. If he goes out, he always lets her know.
"His phone is not reachable," She said worriedly.
"Don't worry, Evelyn. He's a young man. Maybe he's at a nightclub or something. Don't worry. He'll get back home soon. You should go to sleep. He'll be home by the morning," Samuel said as he comforted her and dropped the call but Evelyn was on edge.
She was having a feeling that something wasn't right. But Samuel mentioned a nightclub. Maybe Josh went out with his date from last night, but he could’ve at least informed her.
Evelyn tried to calm her mind as she lay on the couch in the lounge and decided to wait for Josh. She didn't realize when she drifted into a deep slumber.
She jerked up with a gasp as she looked around with wide eyes and blurry vision. She jolted badly when the door banged again.
Instantly getting up to her feet she padded towards the front door. Another loud banging had her stiffening up. Joshua had the keys. Then who was it at this hour?
She peeked through the small peephole and gulped, finding two men dressed in black suits.
"Open the door!" One of them barked while banging on the door causing her to flinch. At this rate, the neighbors would come out. But Josh has strictly told her not to open the doors to strangers.
"We are here to take you to your brother!" The other guy said loudly. It was like they were sure that she was present there and she could hear them.
They know Josh. She clutched the pendant tightly. This pendant was her mom's. She had given it to Evelyn when she was just a kid. She had told her to never remove it. Whenever Evelyn gets scared, she clutches the pendant and it gives her strength as if she wasn't alone.
They were sounding fishy. She will not fall for it. If they could come to her apartment. Did this mean they had Josh? Was Josh in danger? Worst-case scenarios started to rake in her mind.
Evelyn scurried to the couch and she grabbed her phone to call the cops when she heard them saying.
"Try anything funny and Joshua will die," It was enough for her body to go still as she clutched the phone tightly.
Her mind couldn't process what was happening as her hands shook in fear and anxiety clutched her heart.
Joshua was in danger, she was sure of it. But why were they here for her? Who were these men? What did they want?
What if they had already done something to Joshua and now were after her? Just the thought of it had her knees buckling up as she decided to call the cops for help when all of a sudden a hand clasped on her mouth and the phone was snatched from her hand.
The man who was holding her cut the call as he shifted along with her and her eyes landed on the window of her room which was wide open now. Someone broke into the apartment through the window.
She got into fight-and-flight mode and she started struggling wildly.
Her heart thumped in her ears. Her eyes were wide in fear and horror as she clawed at that man's hand only for him to apply pressure in his hold causing her pain.
He yanked her along with him to the front door as he unlocked it and let the other two guys inside before they closed the door.
She gaped at those two men with teary eyes as she struggled hard.
She tried to elbow the man who was holding her and he let her go with such force almost pushing her and she crashed on the floor with a wince of pain.
Before she could gather her bearings the other guy hovered over her as he grabbed her arm and yanked her back to her feet. She let out a cry of pain as his hold was harsh on her arm.
"Listen here girl," The man said coldly, jerking her badly to get her attention.
"Our boss is asking for your presence. Your brother will pay for his life if you don't oblige to go with us," He hissed.
"Y...you're lying," She whispered looking at his shoulder.
She was sure that at any moment she would have a heart attack and would die. She so wanted for all of this to be a nightmare, she just wanted to wake up.
The guy looked at the scary man who had a scar on his face. "Maxwell, show her." Maxwell was the guy with a scar on his cheek and eyebrow. He took out his phone and showed Evelyn a video in which Josh was tied to a chair as someone punched him.
"NO-" Her scream was muffled as the guy holding her arm clasped his hand on her mouth.
"Now, you believe us?" Maxwell said calmly.
"Let her go, Rick," Maxwell said.
Rick let her go as Maxwell took a threatening step closer to her.
"We can do it in two ways. Either you go willingly with us or we had to drug you and take you along. I'm kind enough to let you choose, girl." Maxwell said sharply as tears kissed her cheeks and her body shook with fear.
Evelyn was terrified as she sat like a stiff statue beside the guy whose name she didn't know. Rick was driving the car and Maxwell was in the passenger's seat.Evelyn kept looking out of the window to keep track of where they were taking her but she was never good with the routes."Rory, do it," Maxwell muttered. She let out a loud gasp when abruptly something covered her eyes rather roughly and then she felt the tight knot at the back of her head. She raised her hands to remove the blindfold when Rory grabbed her hand in a rough grip and tugged it down."Stay still, if you don't want me to tie you up," He said coldly and tears leaked out of her closed eyes. One of her eyes was not even properly closed and the blindfold was too tight, almost digging into her eyes. She clutched her hands in a fist and sat there silently. She didn't know for how long they kept on driving but it was too far away from wherever they were taking her and she couldn't even hear any noise from the other cars.
His ominous laugh echoed in the dark empty place. If not for the light bulb hanging above their heads the place would drown in pitch-black darkness. It was him! Why? “A…Axel, what’s going on?” Her voice was so small and full of absolute terror. She looked to her side where Maxwell, Rick, and Rory stood as stiff as a statue and then she gazed at the front door of the rotten and old-looking warehouse. She glanced at the limp and battered body of Josh and her heart constricted in pain. How could she save her brother? They were four bulky giant men against her. She was in a compromised condition. They could kill both of them without even putting much effort into it.In her panic-stricken state, she pushed the question of why they were there to the back of her head. For now, she just wanted to save her brother. Her eyes collided with those grey hues and she flinched, involuntarily stepping back. This was the same gentleman who saved her that night and he even smiled at her just two days
"Josh w...would never do anything wrong," She mumbled but he tightened his hold on her neck and pulled her closer to such an extent that she could feel his hot breath on her face and it had her insides twisting in fear."Shut up!" He hissed and pushed her away making her stumble a step back as he turned around.Axel tried his very best to control his rage but he couldn't."Why did you hurt my brother? What did he do?" She tried to ask him calmly but pivoted to only glare at her. His gaze pierced through her soul and forced her to lower her eyes."Be grateful that he's still alive," Axel sneered and she flinched at the coldness in his voice which sounded like a growl."L....leave... E..Eve..." Josh couldn't even form a full word as tears dripped down his temple. "You Bastard!" Axel growled and charged forward, kicking Joshua's already limp body as he winced in pain."NO!" Evelyn screamed as she sprang forward and covered Joshua's body with hers. Axel's kick was about to hit her face a
Evelyn was silently crying sitting in the corridor as Josh was being treated in the emergency ward.Axel's men had dropped them at the front of the hospital and left. The people and the staff helped Joshua inside. The doctor won't start the treatment before the deposit. She didn't even have money to take a cab so she ran all the way to their apartment. Her legs had no energy and she felt dizzy but her brother's life was at stake. She grabbed all the savings and shoved them in her bag pack along with her phone. She got a cab and hurried to the hospital. After the payment and a few signatures on the important document, they started Joshua's treatment. She also heard the doctors discussing that the matter needed police involvement. They were about to approach her regarding this matter but then another doctor came dashing toward them and said something to them. They looked at Evelyn with scared eyes before heading into the room to treat Joshua. She was moving back and forth lightly while
"You're up. I brought porridge for you," Evelyn smiled at her brother who tried to sit up but couldn't and she was instantly on his side as she helped him to sit and set the pillow behind his back.He winced and tried to control the hiss of pain. She knew his whole body was in pain and he could barely move without her help.Joshua was unconscious for the whole night due to sedatives and painkillers. She was right beside him throughout the night and she woke up to him patting her head with two of his fingers. She couldn't stop her tears as she cried kissing the back of his hand. He had asked her if she was alright in that cracking voice. He could barely talk much but he still asked about those men in his groggy state. She told him that he should sleep for a while and that she would tell him everything once he woke up. He hesitantly obliged as she hurried home and prepared food for him according to the diet planner. They were supposed to do grocery shopping before all this but now there
The officers left without taking any statements. They even warned Joshua not to mess with Mr. Knight."Josh," She whispered in a small voice, placing her hand on his shoulder, he rubbed his face looking up at her with that stressed look on his face."Where did you go on that Saturday night?" She asked."The Black Palace restaurant," He answered."Who was your date?" "Sasha. Why are you asking this?""Nothing. Here, take your medicines and go to sleep," She said, handing him his medicines. He gulped them down but grabbed her wrist getting her attention."Where are you going?" He asked."I'm going to work. I'll be doing a full-time job at Smith's for a few days or else I'll look for another job," She said and he shook his head."No. You need to leave Evelyn. I won't be able to protect you in this condition. That bastard has links in the police department. I don't understand why he's after me and I can't let you be at risk for the time being," He was saying when his eyes widened slightl
Axel has asked Maxwell to keep an eye on the siblings. So he was aware of her every move.Axel chugged his drink down. The liquid burned his throat but he needed the liquor to stay numb or else he would kill Joshua and his sister within minutes if he lost his mind. But that wasn't the plan from the start. He was glad when he found out that f*cker has a sister. It would be easier to torment him through his sister but never in his wildest dreams, he thought that it would be Evelyn. Out of 7 f*cking billion people in this world. It has to be the girl he was attracted to. Why her?Why the f*ck it has to be her?He was beyond pissed when she admitted she was his sister. This wasn't supposed to happen. Everything was just fine but then this f*cker Joshua destroyed the dearest thing to Axel.Axel couldn't forget what he saw that night. His blood boiled in his veins and it was only thanks to the liquor in his body that was keeping him from killing them.He wanted to kill Joshua's sister righ
"You shouldn't be sleeping so carelessly, Evelyn," the way he said her name had goosebumps of terror rising on her flesh as her eyes bounced around for anything she could use as a weapon and could escape."H...how did y...you get in?" She breathed shakily and he tilted his head. He was still crouching in front of her looking scary as ever."I've my ways," He said casually. "W...why are you here?" She asked as her mind processed a plan to save herself. If he tried anything she would run into the kitchen and grab a knife. But she has to be faster because if he caught her she would be dead.He sighed before getting up to his mighty height. She gulped as her neck craned up looking at him. He slipped his hands into his pants pocket while peering down at her calmly."Why, you ask. Can't I even meet my soon-to-be wife?" He mused and his casual tone made her heart stutter in fear. The shock of his sudden presence was slowly fading away as she got up from the couch and abruptly stepped to her
