Adoring obsidian eyes betrayed the smirk at one corner of his lips. The words lacked their usual sting. Shane was a man of many mysteries, and while I have wanted to solve every single once since the moment he walked into my VIP room, that’s not what I wanted to do right now. He was selfish, arrogant, and did whatever he wanted, but most of all, he was infuriating. Even after all he’s done, my heart still skipped a beat as his eyes dipped to my lips. I wanted to scream, but I settled on yanking my chin free from his grasp.

“I’m crying because you murdered my friend and all you can say is I’m ugly when I cry?” I shrieked.

He laughed.

“Why are you laughing? You’re such an ass!” I wailed. More tears streaked down my cheeks, and I swiped them away angrily.

“Shh, that’s not what I meant.”

“Then what did you mean, Shane? You know, other than the literal meaning?”

“It’s an old joke you wouldn’t understand,” he murmured.

“You don’t make any sense,” I cried.

“I know,” he murmured softly.
