Chapter 10 The Publicized Kiss

"Mommy is just too busy with her affairs to care about us." Lucas, who was sitting on the couch nearby watching cartoons, cheekily provoked his mommy.

"Lucas!" Scarlett lost her temper with her son.

When she'd been swarmed by those reporters, she'd been worried sick about this little boy’s safety, but he'd already left Leonard Corporations.

"Affairs?" Dylan didn’t understand what the little boy meant.

"Don’t listen to his nonsense. Children don’t know what they're talking about." Scarlett could see a hint of displeasure in Dylan’s eyes, and she didn’t want him to overthink anything. "I’m really sorry about what happened today, Dylan."

Dylan had returned to Catheden a few days earlier to help Scarlett and Lucas find a place to live. Yet, the woman in front of him didn’t seem to appreciate his efforts. He'd even gone to pick her up in person, but she didn’t even give him a call.

"You are sorry." Dylan spoke thoughtfully. "But not toward me. You’re sorry for yourself." He looked at the injury on her foot, feeling very distressed. "You just arrived here, and you’re already such a mess. I don’t think living in Catheden is right for you. In my opinion, you should go back to Amerstica after a few days."

"No!" Scarlett immediately refused, and her tone was very firm. Dylan knew that she was this resolute only in her work and never in her life. He was very curious about what had happened to Scarlett and Lucas today.

Affairs? What had Lucas meant by "affairs"?

Dylan made dinner for Scarlett and Lucas himself. Both of them had always liked his cooking, since he was a hundred times better than the chefs at five-star hotels. After dinner, Lucas argued that he wanted to watch TV for a while; otherwise, he wouldn’t go to bed. Scarlett had no choice but to resign to watching TV with the little boy.

Scarlett looked around the two-story villa. It looked the same as the villa she'd stayed at in Amerstica, with almost the same designs and interior. But this place was the Belleview Estate, where Dylan lived. Hadn't Dylan said that he'd already found a place for them? By that, did he mean that he wanted her and Lucas to stay with him?

"Lucas, I got you some of those pears that you liked. And here are some apples, Scar." Dylan thoughtfully placed the fruits on the small table. After that, he joined them on the couch and watched TV together.

Scarlett felt a little uncomfortable. Even though Dylan was good to both her and Lucas, she knew his feelings. The nicer Dylan was to her, the more unhappy she felt. She felt that she owed him too much.

"Lucas, there isn’t anything interesting on TV; we should go to bed." Scarlett nudged her son.

"Hang on, let’s keep watching a little longer…" The little boy held the TV remote and continuously switched channels.

"On today’s news, Jonathan Leonard successfully hosted a fashion show in Leonard Corporations’ office, which was witnessed by many entrepreneurs in the business. A dress that Mr. Leonard designed, Dusk Skyline, was supposed to be modeled by Miss Monica Winter, but there was a sudden change, and she was replaced by Miss Scarlett Langston, a world-renowned lawyer. On the stage, Mr. Leonard affectionately kissed Miss Langston in front of everyone and…"

Scarlett watched in horror as the humiliation she'd endured played on TV.

She was worried that Dylan would make assumptions and quickly grabbed the remote from Lucas to turn off the TV. The originally warm atmosphere was seemingly destroyed by a sudden chill. Even the usually talkative Lucas didn’t break the awkward silence.
