Chapter 6

Austin was flabbergasted.

What had happened to the cold and stoic Susie? Why was she acting like a flirtatious young woman now?

He recalled Nancy describing Susie as a virtuous young woman with traditional values. Even after she started dating Harvey, she maintained proper boundaries and only held hands with him.

Well, Austin was neither dumb nor blind.

Was Susie … really a virtuous young woman with traditional values who maintained proper boundaries?

The middle-aged man's expression darkened, and he eyed Austin with hostility.

"This is a bank, mister. Kindly behave yourself. As the bank manager, I am now asking you to leave. Otherwise, don't blame me for letting the security guards throw you out."

The security guards had smug smiles on their faces. Everyone working in the bank knew that Susie had a thing going on with the bank manager, Hiram Beck.

Was this guy trying to go after Susie? Well, he was asking for it.

After hearing what Hiram said, Susie's mannerisms became even more coquettish. She pouted, "Mr. Beck, why waste your breath on a guy like him? Just get the security guards to throw him out."

Austin was furious, but he did not get up from his seat.

Ezra had given him the debit card, and he came here to withdraw money, so why did he have to put up with such disrespect?

Earlier on, he was merely vexed about being in Susie's presence, but now, her attitude infuriated him!

"Throw him out!" Hiram commanded with a ferocious expression when he saw that Austin had not budged at all.

If not out of consideration for his position as the bank manager, Hiram would have had the security guards chase Austin out solely for staring indecently at Susie.

The two security guards started coming forward, and the spectating crowd continued to grow.

Austin was not a pushover. He was not the type who would put up with such treatment.

Their disrespectful attitude made him explode in anger.

He slammed the debit card with the purple orchid design onto the counter and bellowed, "I came here to withdraw money. I didn't come here to let you accuse me of being a pervert. Are you forcing me to make a scene?"

The security guards stopped moving.

Though Hiram was glowering, he glanced down at the debit card anyway.

Then, at the very next second, Hiram's mind went blank. His eyes bulged as he gasped, "That's …"

Sweat began to bead across his forehead.

"It's a fake debit card, Mr. Beck," Susie snorted indifferently, but when she saw how profusely Hiram was sweating, she was dumbstruck.

In the blink of an eye, Hiram wiped the sweat off his forehead, and his hostile expression was replaced by an ingratiating smile.

He bowed to Austin and said, "I'm so sorry, sir. I had no idea you were a VIP customer with the orchid card. Please come with me to my office. I'll personally handle your transaction."

Susie felt as if she had been struck by lightning. She exclaimed in disbelief, "T-That's a real debit card?"

"You know nothing!" Hiram growled at her and shot her a nasty glare.

Still sweating heavily, he turned back to Austin and said with a smile, "This way, please, sir."

It turned out that Hiram knew his stuff after all.

Cocking his eyebrows, Austin cast a scornful glance at the stupefied Susie before following Hiram to the latter's office.

Austin's priority now was to withdraw some money. Since Hiram, the bank manager, had changed his tune, there was no reason for him to continue harping on the matter.

As for Susie, well, he finally understood what she was truly like.

Austin was feeling expectant too. If only Hiram recognized the debit card Ezra gave him, it meant that it was a rare one. Just how much money would there be in the account?

Once the two men disappeared into Hiram's office, the silent bank lobby was instantly filled with chatter.

The onlookers were shocked by the unexpected turn of events.

Susie was also standing in a daze. Her eyes were brimming with tears, and she was trembling slightly.

Susie came to a grim realization.

She had made a grave mistake! Even Hiram would not dare to help her smooth things over!
