I woke up abruptly feeling my breath being cut off. Kat was practically sprawled over my chest, and Grace's leg was on my abdomen, pressing down as she hugged my leg tightly. I moved Kat aside a bit and tried to lower Grace's leg. Kat lifted her head slightly and opened her eyes, staring at me; I smiled a bit. Her hair was tousled, and her just-awakened face was so lovely."Did you sleep well?" I asked her.She squinted her eyes and lay back on my chest. I looked up at the ceiling and frowned; I was living every man's dream, but in a bad way."Your heartbeat is soothing," Kat said sleepily.I smiled satisfied with what she said; I was on the right track."Kat, my head hurts," Grace complained.Kat moved away from my chest and sat up in bed; she looked at me and then at her friend, who was still clinging to my leg."You drank two bottles of tequila; it's a miracle you're alive," Kat replied.And it was true, Grace drank much more than Kat. Grace let go of my leg and also sat up in bed.

While I was working, I couldn't stop thinking about what Grace had said. Maybe I could give it a try, after all, I wouldn't be hurting anyone. I bit my lower lip and took out my phone from my bag. In the afternoon, I went to visit Grace at her workplace. I needed to vent to someone about what had happened today with Hayden. I knew she would come up with some offhand comment that would make me laugh. "Apple cider or cyanide?" Grace asked me. I smiled and sat down in front of her. "I suggested we hook up, and he said no," I told her. Grace's mouth dropped open, then she furrowed her brow. "I thought he was into you," she said. I nodded. "He wants us to have some kind of non-relationship. I just don't get it," I said. Grace looked even more confused than I was. "What do you mean?" she asked. "He wants us to hang out, and if at any point in our non-relationship we want to hook up, we will, but he doesn't want just sex. He wants there to be, like, feelings or something," I said. Grace and I went to open the door, and as we did, I stood there looking foolishly at him. Hayden was wearing a black suit that made him look even more handsome; it fit him so well that it seemed tailor-made. Hayden had arrived at my house a few hours later. He knocked on my door for about an hour, while calling my phone. I sat on the bed, put on a romance movie at full volume while getting drunk. I know it's not healthy, but it makes me feel good.The next morning, I left early for work, which I had set aside to pretend to be a teenager."Kat, can you review these documents?" Lily asked me.I nodded, and she placed them on my desk. Then, she left. I took the documents out of the envelope and started reading.The door to my office opened again. I looked up from the documents and saw Grace with a bottle of wine and two crystal glasses."Congratulations! Hayden rushed towards me and caught up with me in the car; he looked at me, but didn't say anything, and I thanked him from the bottom of my heart for that. I didn't want to talk about the issue; I didn't want to think about it. We both got into the car, and Hayden started driving right away. I leaned back in the seat and closed my eyes for a moment, needing to process what had just happened. "Are you okay?" Hayden asked me. I opened my eyes and looked out the car window as he continued driving; I didn't want to look at him, I felt too vulnerable and knew I would cry if I did. "I'm sorry about what happened, but I think you shouldn't have reacted that way. I don't know what kind of problem you have with your mother, but she needs you, and if she told you it's because she thinks you're strong and can handle it," he said.
