Chapter 22

Charity keeps silent as she thinks of a proper answer to Rachel's question.

She is a very private person and has always lived a private life, saying only what she was asked, but she knows Rachel has every right to be mad.

"Rachel, I..." She started, but choked on her own words.

Rachel felt tears stinging her eyes and immediately stood up to avoid unexplainable tears and questions from the son Charity apparently has.

"Rachel! Rachel," Charity called as she raced after her. Rachel didn't stop but immediately got into her car and turned the ignition.

"Rachel, please calm down and let me explain," she begged as she tapped the window repeatedly.

Rachel didn't say a word but immediately drove off, leaving a confused and sorry Charity in the parking lot.

The wind blew Charity's flannel shirt as she watched the car go until it was out of sight. She ran her slender fingers carefully through her thick hair, sighed, and walked back into her house.

"Why'd you have to come visit me here?
