“Shh, Aislen Carter,” Toby put his finger to his lips. “Help me.”

Several of the other mind-f-ked Van Helsings were in the walkway between the cages, their hospital gowns revealing more than they hid in the light spilled into the room through the open door. In the doorway the others were keeping lookout into the foyer. They were all armed, the contrast between the high powered guns and their bare-footed barely clad state lending an air of unreality that was not helped by the fact that Aislen had been woken out of a deep sleep, exhausted after her torture.

Either the movement or the scent on blood on Toby was beginning to wake the zombiefied people in the cages, and Aislen knew she needed to decide quickly. “F-k it,” she took his hand, and he pulled her out of the bed.

“What about us?” Dr James sat up in her bed and gripped the bars. “Don’t abandon us all.”

So glad to have had all these characters of the present from the beginning. It definitely to some edge off that cliffhanger of the last book.
