Aaron hastily checked his watch as he hurried onto the elevator to go to his office. He had to be back at the hospital.
He'd hated not being there when she woke up but he needed to sort a few things out at the office. He was going to make his way there soon after.
But what he hadn't been expecting was a full office that morning. It was too early he'd thought.
Aaron owned the whole building but only a few people were permitted on his office level, the highest level. And that list didn't have more than 5 people on it.
So his shock was justified when he'd walked in and saw more than a few people seemingly in police uniform talking to his secretary.
So the worst possible conclusions made it to his mind, naturally. It better not be about his wife, it can't have been. He was with her just a few hours before, she was ok. Could it be about his kids? Was there fraud in his company he didn't know about?
"Morning Officers."
He'd settled with just finding out from them, to not drive himself crazy.
"Mr. Miller. How're you doing?"
He'd tried really hard to hide his irritation at that and then,
"Is there something I can help you with gentlemen?"
He knew they didn't care how he was doing so they needn't ask. They just had to get to the reason they were there.
But he felt his patience running thin when,
"We're really sorry to intrude sir so early in the morning."
Not what he'd wanted to hear. They were already there.
Aaron found himself making a mental conclusion that whatever it was wasn't that serious. If it was about his wife the hospital would've called him. So,
"I really have to get going. Whatever it is I'm sure Sarah here will be able to assist you."
He said that looking at his secretary. They'd already wasted enough of his time and he now had to get to the hospital. He then turned around to leave when,
"I'm afraid you're going to want to hear this Mr. Miller. It's about your wife."
Words he'd been afraid to hear. He stopped in his tracks ignoring his heart beating a mile a minute.
"We have reason to believe her accident wasn't really an accident."
He felt his whole world collapse to the ground. What were his ears hearing?
No it can't have been. His wife was the sweetest kindest soul in the universe, who would want to harm her?
But Aaron had to make sure that his ears weren't playing tricks on him before he let his conspiracy theories run wild. So,
"What?"
He could barely hear himself.
"Her car, it was fiddled with... But not only that. The car she collided with wasn't only not registered to anyone, but there was no one inside when we got to the scene."
He was livid. How did he not know about that? Aaron finally turned around to look at them and then,
"How long have you known this?"
He needed them to tell him they just found out and that was why they were only telling him then.
But,
"A while sir. But this is because we always need to make sure of the facts before making such wild allegations."
Fair. But,
"It took you almost a year to find out that there wasn't anyone in the car and that the same car wasn't registered? How was that not alarming to start with?"
His voice was getting loud. He couldn't help the anger that burned inside of him.
"Huh? Why am I finding out now that someone wanted to murder my wife!!?"
The flinch in their expressions only confirmed to him that they were afraid.
Of course they were.
Aaron Miller was not one to mess with. He could have anything taken away from you in just one phone call and sure they knew that. Everyone did.
"I want you to get out of my office right this second! And I want you to find out who did this! And don't come back until you have a name!... Am I making myself clear?"
He needed to make sure they understood him because he wasn't going to be responsible for what would happen to them if they didn't.
"Yes sir."
They'd said before making their way out of the office as instructed.
It was beyond him how they had so much time and all they'd managed to figure out was what they'd told him. Did they not know who he was?
"Sir what do you want me to do?"
His secretary had asked. She knew the man well and what he wasn't going to do was wait around for the police to do their job, they hardly did. They needed to get to work.
And when he said to her,
"Get Mike on the phone."
She needn't be told twice. She did so as Aaron made his way to his office and closed the door behind him. The newfound information changed his plans, understandably. When it came to his wife, the man would drop everything.
After a brief chat with his long-time acquaintance who'd promised to deliver as always, Aaron found himself staring at nothing in particular.
Whoever did that to his wife wasn't after her, they were clearly after him. She barely even knew anyone let alone gotten into any kind of trouble for anyone to ever want to kill her.
Whoever did it knew exactly how to hurt him. But not only that, they knew how much his wife meant to him, which shortens the list and ultimately makes the mystery not that hard to solve anymore.
But all Aaron could do after was go to the hospital to see his wife as he'd initially planned.
He'd made all the necessary calls he needed to make to his most trusted people who he was sure would deliver.
He was sure he would get an answer of who did it soon enough, or at least an update. But until then, all he wanted to do was be by the girl's side. Not only because he desperately wanted to be, but because he needed to make sure whoever did it didn't come back to finish the job.
Of course he didn't waste time making sure to hire a team that would circulate and guard the hospital to make sure nothing happened to her.
"Hey baby,"
He'd whispered to her fragile form as she smiled slightly at his sight. It was her favorite in the world.
Kayla was finally out of the coma, but that didn't mean she was all healed. She was certainly doing better than before but she was a long way from a full recovery.
"Hi love,"
She'd responded softly to her husband, melting his heart while at it.
Aaron had always sworn to protect his wife, even if it meant losing his own life. But looking at her fragile form, he couldn't help but feel like he failed her. Because of him, she was laying on a hospital bed wasting her life away. Because of him, she lost their son.
He then cautiously picked up her soft, cold hand to stroke it lightly like he did every day.
He never liked to keep things from her but he didn't want her to know what was happening. He didn't want to freak her out. But also, if she knew she would insist he do nothing about it. She would insist that he just let it go and that was something he simply couldn't do. He was ready to murder someone for what they'd done to his wife.
She never liked that side of him, the gangster side. And he'd happily given up that life for her, he would've done anything for her happiness. Even if it meant lying to her.
That was why he'd responded by saying,
"Yes of course," with a smile when she'd asked if everything was ok. She could always sense if something was wrong with him.
"I'll be back just now my love," He'd then said to her when he saw there was an incoming call. He'd usually ignored his phone ringing then called the person later - he never wanted any distractions when he was at the hospital with his wife, and they all knew. But the current incoming call was of major importance. It was a call he'd been waiting for that whole day.
So,
"Mike? Talk to me."
He'd said to the person on the phone once he reached a spot he was sure no one would hear him.
He was ready to find out who did it and permanently remove them from this world. But all that anger and malice turned into heartbreak. When,
"It was someone closer to you than you think. They weren't trying to send a message to you or hurt you. They wanted to discard of Kayla. They wanted her out of your life."
*Flashback*"Pathetic. What is she? 16?"I hear the lady whose name I believe is Sandra whisper/yell from the other room as I look around for the bathroom. Left and then right, I let my mind remember. This place is huge, it's even bigger than his house. I walk further down the long corridor until I finally come across the right turn that leads me to the bathroom. I breathe a sigh of relief. It's only been a couple of hours and that's not even the worst thing she's said about us. I think, "She's just a plaything, he'll get over her soon enough," was just about the most hurtful, so far. Or maybe, "She's just with him for his money, he'll realize it." I can't decide. The conclusion here is that they really don't like me.I guess I didn't really expect them to but I wasn't also expecting to get so much hate from just meeting them. They haven't even bothered to get to know me, they're judging me off of my age and I think that's not fair.It sucks because I really like this guy. Yes he's a
He refused to believe it. It cannot have been, there was no way.It had been a few weeks since he was given the news. No name was given but a few names were implied and one name, in particular, was insisted upon.Sandra was not perfect, not even a tiny bit but she wasn't at all capable of murder. Aaron was certain of that. There must've been an explanation. He entered the elevator of the massive hospital to get to the VIP floor where his wife was. It was time to finally tell her what was going on, he had been delaying it for too long. He knew that she could sense that something was wrong, she'd probably even thought he was cheating on her. That was how bad the tension was.He closed his eyes once inside the elevator and then laid his form against the walls. He needed strength. He was sure of what his wife was going to say about the news. He was sure she wasn't going to be jumping for joy so he needed to prepare himself."Hey Deena, is she in her room?"He'd asked the sweet receptionis
*Flashback*"I love you but I hate that you're doing this to me."I say to my fiancé in frustration. I know there's no turning back now but that still won't stop me from being annoyed and complaining about it."All you're doing is going to dinner with your future husband's family, I don't get what's so painful about that.""Oh I don't know, maybe just the simple fact that said family happens to be a bunch of your ex-wives who would rather not have me breathing the same air as them."I say to him only half joking."Babe, they just need to get used to you. And how are they going to do that if they never see you?"I decide not to respond to that to not ensue another argument. I've been meeting them for quite a while now and they still treat me the same, like I'm an intruder. He knows this but he keeps on defending them. It's getting old and irritating. They are grown-ups and they need to act like it.I don't tell him all that though. I instead ask him,"Do they know?"I'm pretty sure the
"Mom?"She thought she was dreaming. It had been so long that the woman looked completely different. She had always been very beautiful but clearly the years had been too hard on her. Like she'd been miserable the past couple of years."Yes sweetheart, it's me." Her tears were uncontrollable. She hadn't seen her daughter conscious in years. 6 years to be exact.Kayla stood up on her feet to give her mother the biggest embrace she'd ever given. The fact that she wasn't a teenager anymore didn't stop her from balling her eyes out on her mother's shoulder."Mama, I missed you so much." She'd continued to say as the older lady held on to her form for dear life. "I'm so sorry." She whispered into her ear. There hadn't been a day she hadn't thought about her daughter, despite being the one who kicked her out. She wished she could explain why she hadn't reached out all those years even though she really wanted to, there was no excuse except for the simple reason that she was human and she ba
Aaron Miller was a prodigy.Even though he was known not to be messed with, he was one of the most generous beings in the country. He had countless charitable organizations on his payroll and he always did the best that he could to help out where he could.Mrs. Sinclair knew this very well. This was because she had done extensive research on the man. This was the man her daughter had run away with and she needed to know who he really was, if she had more things she needed to worry about.Even though she hated the man, she couldn't help but go through all the good he'd done in his community and the world. She'd been in awe despite her heart not wanting her to be at how incredible he seemingly was.But that still didn't overall change her true feelings about him. She hated him, more than words could ever express. Because of him, she wasn't ever able to see her daughter turn into a woman. She never got to send her to college and see her cry uncontrollably at the fact that she was going t
*Flashback*"Seriously? You got me fired?"Words cannot explain the anger radiating within me. Yes, I wasn't the kindest person to him, but getting me fired was beyond extreme. And not only that,"I can't get any other job because you put me on some stupid list and now no one will hire me." I try really hard not to cry as I say this because I don't want him thinking he broke me or something.Of course I'd just thought to go get another job for the summer after getting fired, only to find out I'm unhirable."Sorry sir, we couldn't stop her." I hear a guard say breathlessly behind me. I asked them nicely to see their boss and they wouldn't let me so I did what I had to do. I kicked him in the nuts and then ran around until I found his office. The security team is clearly a joke here since it wasn't hard at all to find this person who's supposedly really important.I'm too busy thinking about how much of an idiot the guard is that I don't see Mr important's full 6'5 hovering over me, I'
"Mr. Miller, any comments on today's potential verdict?""Mr. Miller, will you be divorcing your wife after this case?""Mr. Miller, do you think your ex-wife will get jail time?""No she won't."That was something he knew for certain. The mother of his son was not going to be arrested. He knew though that answering the press was a bad idea because it only encouraged them to ask more questions. So he was hardly surprised when,"Mr. Miller...""Mr. Miller...""Mr. Miller..."He had to shut them out, all of them. For his sanity. He had a clue on what the verdict was going to be, and he knew he was definitely not going to divorce his wife but he unfortunately couldn't say the same for the girl. He knew he was going to fight though, he was going to fight for her even if it was the last thing he did. The situation they were in was beyond complicated but just like every hardship they'd ever been through, they'd get through it. They always did."Are you ready Aaron?"He wasn't. Not even in t
*Flashback*"Marry me.""What?""Marry me."I look at my boyfriend like the crazy person he is but I'm surprised when I don't see even a hint of humor in his eyes. So I look back at him again, now with the same intensity he's radiating through his eyes. But it's to ask him again,"What?"Aaron Miller has made a declaration, to himself and the people around him. That he would never again get married and he put that on his life. Dating him, I had to accept that we would never get past the dating point. That marriage was something I would never experience, at least not with him. I'd happily given that up because I'd never felt for anyone what I felt for him. No man had ever made my heart beat a mile a minute just by a single stare. We're now laying in bed, at 2 p.m. Something we've been doing a lot lately, mostly because it's winter time and there's nowhere else we'd rather be. But also because we can't seem to be able to be apart from each other. Wherever he is is where I want to be, a
