To kill for.

Aaron hastily checked his watch as he hurried onto the elevator to go to his office. He had to be back at the hospital.

He'd hated not being there when she woke up but he needed to sort a few things out at the office. He was going to make his way there soon after.

But what he hadn't been expecting was a full office that morning. It was too early he'd thought.

Aaron owned the whole building but only a few people were permitted on his office level, the highest level. And that list didn't have more than 5 people on it.

So his shock was justified when he'd walked in and saw more than a few people seemingly in police uniform talking to his secretary.

So the worst possible conclusions made it to his mind, naturally. It better not be about his wife, it can't have been. He was with her just a few hours before, she was ok. Could it be about his kids? Was there fraud in his company he didn't know about?

"Morning Officers."

He'd settled with just finding out from them, to not drive himself crazy.

"Mr. Miller. How're you doing?"

He'd tried really hard to hide his irritation at that and then,

"Is there something I can help you with gentlemen?"

He knew they didn't care how he was doing so they needn't ask. They just had to get to the reason they were there.

But he felt his patience running thin when,

"We're really sorry to intrude sir so early in the morning."

Not what he'd wanted to hear. They were already there.

Aaron found himself making a mental conclusion that whatever it was wasn't that serious. If it was about his wife the hospital would've called him. So,

"I really have to get going. Whatever it is I'm sure Sarah here will be able to assist you."

He said that looking at his secretary. They'd already wasted enough of his time and he now had to get to the hospital. He then turned around to leave when,

"I'm afraid you're going to want to hear this Mr. Miller. It's about your wife."

Words he'd been afraid to hear. He stopped in his tracks ignoring his heart beating a mile a minute.

"We have reason to believe her accident wasn't really an accident."

He felt his whole world collapse to the ground. What were his ears hearing?

No it can't have been. His wife was the sweetest kindest soul in the universe, who would want to harm her?

But Aaron had to make sure that his ears weren't playing tricks on him before he let his conspiracy theories run wild. So,

"What?"

He could barely hear himself.

"Her car, it was fiddled with... But not only that. The car she collided with wasn't only not registered to anyone, but there was no one inside when we got to the scene."

He was livid. How did he not know about that? Aaron finally turned around to look at them and then,

"How long have you known this?"

He needed them to tell him they just found out and that was why they were only telling him then.

But,

"A while sir. But this is because we always need to make sure of the facts before making such wild allegations."

Fair. But,

"It took you almost a year to find out that there wasn't anyone in the car and that the same car wasn't registered? How was that not alarming to start with?"

His voice was getting loud. He couldn't help the anger that burned inside of him.

"Huh? Why am I finding out now that someone wanted to murder my wife!!?"

The flinch in their expressions only confirmed to him that they were afraid.

Of course they were.

Aaron Miller was not one to mess with. He could have anything taken away from you in just one phone call and sure they knew that. Everyone did.

"I want you to get out of my office right this second! And I want you to find out who did this! And don't come back until you have a name!... Am I making myself clear?"

He needed to make sure they understood him because he wasn't going to be responsible for what would happen to them if they didn't.

"Yes sir."

They'd said before making their way out of the office as instructed.

It was beyond him how they had so much time and all they'd managed to figure out was what they'd told him. Did they not know who he was?

"Sir what do you want me to do?"

His secretary had asked. She knew the man well and what he wasn't going to do was wait around for the police to do their job, they hardly did. They needed to get to work.

And when he said to her,

"Get Mike on the phone."

She needn't be told twice. She did so as Aaron made his way to his office and closed the door behind him. The newfound information changed his plans, understandably. When it came to his wife, the man would drop everything.

After a brief chat with his long-time acquaintance who'd promised to deliver as always, Aaron found himself staring at nothing in particular.

Whoever did that to his wife wasn't after her, they were clearly after him. She barely even knew anyone let alone gotten into any kind of trouble for anyone to ever want to kill her.

Whoever did it knew exactly how to hurt him. But not only that, they knew how much his wife meant to him, which shortens the list and ultimately makes the mystery not that hard to solve anymore.

But all Aaron could do after was go to the hospital to see his wife as he'd initially planned.

He'd made all the necessary calls he needed to make to his most trusted people who he was sure would deliver.

He was sure he would get an answer of who did it soon enough, or at least an update. But until then, all he wanted to do was be by the girl's side. Not only because he desperately wanted to be, but because he needed to make sure whoever did it didn't come back to finish the job.

Of course he didn't waste time making sure to hire a team that would circulate and guard the hospital to make sure nothing happened to her.

"Hey baby,"

He'd whispered to her fragile form as she smiled slightly at his sight. It was her favorite in the world.

Kayla was finally out of the coma, but that didn't mean she was all healed. She was certainly doing better than before but she was a long way from a full recovery.

"Hi love,"

She'd responded softly to her husband, melting his heart while at it.

Aaron had always sworn to protect his wife, even if it meant losing his own life. But looking at her fragile form, he couldn't help but feel like he failed her. Because of him, she was laying on a hospital bed wasting her life away. Because of him, she lost their son.

He then cautiously picked up her soft, cold hand to stroke it lightly like he did every day.

He never liked to keep things from her but he didn't want her to know what was happening. He didn't want to freak her out. But also, if she knew she would insist he do nothing about it. She would insist that he just let it go and that was something he simply couldn't do. He was ready to murder someone for what they'd done to his wife.

She never liked that side of him, the gangster side. And he'd happily given up that life for her, he would've done anything for her happiness. Even if it meant lying to her.

That was why he'd responded by saying,

"Yes of course," with a smile when she'd asked if everything was ok. She could always sense if something was wrong with him.

"I'll be back just now my love," He'd then said to her when he saw there was an incoming call. He'd usually ignored his phone ringing then called the person later - he never wanted any distractions when he was at the hospital with his wife, and they all knew. But the current incoming call was of major importance. It was a call he'd been waiting for that whole day.

So,

"Mike? Talk to me."

He'd said to the person on the phone once he reached a spot he was sure no one would hear him.

He was ready to find out who did it and permanently remove them from this world. But all that anger and malice turned into heartbreak. When,

"It was someone closer to you than you think. They weren't trying to send a message to you or hurt you. They wanted to discard of Kayla. They wanted her out of your life."
