Hospital

“Cassie?” McKenzie's voice calls out. “Cassie? Can you hear me?”

“She’s still out cold.” Devin’s voice says as I slowly begin to open my eyes. “She had one hell of a temperature.”

I groggily open my eyes. The two of them are standing on each side of me. I’m in the hospital and I am connected to every monitoring machine possible.

I feel weak, dizzy, and cold. Me trying to sit up feels impossible as my body fights to do so. Why am I so weak and tired!

“You guys?” I softly say. My throat is scratchy like sandpaper. I feel like I haven’t had water in days, and it burns with every word. “What happened?”

“Cassie!” McKenzie excitedly exclaims. “You’re finally awake!”

Devin turns his head away from me, looking toward the window with a relieved smile on his face. His hands as usual are sitting in his expensive pants pocket.

I cough and it burns with every breath. I try talking but the sandpaper
