Ice cold water hit Kade the moment he pressed the old rusty lever, thousands of droplets raining down on him like needles, slicing into his flesh. The moment the brutal shower hit his bruised and bloodied skin, he gritted his teeth, shuddering as the cold sank painfully into his bones. Blood quickly turned the water a pinkish red colour as it swirled around the dirty plug hole and the sound of his breath ricocheted off the tiles like bullets. The early spring night was frigid, winter still clinging to the dark to drop the temperatures to a crisp sharp bite that was only amplified by the frigid water.
Kade had long since lost track of time. It wasn't uncommon for him to black out when fighting. That was the trouble with having a wolf like Legion; they could take control more easily and border on the feral side. Since leaving the forces, Legion had become more difficult to control and Kade had been living with a constant headache as the wolf thrashed against his c
Kade knew he was in trouble the moment bright, unfiltered sunlight suddenly poured into his room and landed squarely on his closed eyes. His eyes snapped open before quickly squeezing shut as the early morning light assaulted his retinas and sent searing pain like an ice-pick to the raw nerves in his brain. For a few very brief moments Kade found himself trying to work out what had happened to leave him with a pounding headache and a mouth like it had been filled with dirt before he was assaulted by watery memories of the previous day. He released a groan that was a mixture of pain and regret, a hand coming up to scrub his ashened face. The sudden sharp pain in his lip from the contact made him wince and he cursed under his breath praying for sleep to take him once more.“Rise and shine, sweet cheeks.” A familiar voice broke through the heavy silence making Kade open his eyes to stare up at the dark haired intruder.
Dagmar was used to her old joints aching even if it was spring but this time her bones were aching for a different reason. The wizened old witch had woken that morning just before dawn with a feeling settling into her aging body that had told her to be prepared. By the time the first yellow rays of sunlight peeked out from the horizon, Dagmar had already turned one of the empty bedrooms into a triage room with clean sheets and runes painted onto the walls in coal dust. She didn't normally go so overboard when it came to treating someone, but the old gods were telling her that this time would be different; that the danger was far darker and more sinister than what she was used to dealing with on a daily basis.Herbs were carefully selected and rinsed before being made ready for wounds and a tea. Crisp white strips of gauze were bathed to keep them germ free and supple and fresh clothes were already neatly placed on the nightstand.
The biting cold air and frigid rain biting into her battered body roused Thalia briefly but she either didn't have the strength to open her eyes or they were too damaged to open to see what was around her. She could feel the rocks and grit biting into her skin though, rubbing into every cut and wound to fester. At some point, as she was slipping in and out of consciousness, she became aware of a presence near her, something curious but unwelcome. When the curious presence became too much, Thalia found just enough energy to force out her aura like a burst of lightning to scare away the curiously little fox that had tried to see if Thalia was an easy meal. That had taken every ounce of energy from Thalia, and she sank into the darkness again. The young she-wolf was pulled out of the comforting illusions when she felt a searing heat on her face. The intensity was like the sun kissing her skin in August when it was at its ho
It was safe to say the expression on Kade’s face was one of surprise and confusion. It was obvious he had assumed Thalia knew something about the place she was in. If only he knew that Thalia hadn’t been able to tell which country she was in for five years now. Sure, she had figured out she was in Greece or any part of the Mediterranean but that was as far as her understanding of her location went. She studied Kade, watching him trying to figure out if she was being sincere or playing some unusual joke. But, while Thalia said nothing else, her bruised face showed that she was telling the truth. She had no idea where she was."We're in the north of England." Kade finally spoke. "I found you maybe thirty miles south west from here."Thalia nodded a little, her eyes becoming distant as she let this shocking news sink in. She hadn't realised she was that far away from what she knew. In a way it made everything feel so muc
Whether it was the tea, the mate-bond or the good night's sleep, Thalia did in fact feel better the next morning. Her body still ached in places like she had been in a fight, but her bones had set and torn ligaments and muscles had stitched together. Even Maeve seemed to have perked up, her energy slowly returning. She found fresh towels sat next to a pile of folded clothing. It wasn't anything like the garments that Dante and Ms Thorton liked to dress her in but oddly they were more comfortable. After a shower to wash away the dried blood, sweat and dirt, Thalia pulled on the simple white underwear, black leggings and large grey knitted jumper. The moment she pulled it over her head she caught the scent of pine needles, wood fire smoke and snow. It soothed her as she inhaled the faint but alluring scent. It didn't take a detective to work out the jumper belonged to her mate, and she caught herself smiling despite herself. The smell of food hit Thalia like a freight train when she
“What?”Both women turned towards the direction the voice had come from, finding Kade in the doorway, his steel eyes boring into Dagmar with outrage. He had left early that morning assuming he could trust Dagmar not to do or say anything stupid, but he should have known this was a foolish assumption on his part. When had Dagmar ever not meddled in matters that weren’t her business? But to suggest that Thalia rid herself of her unborn children? That was perhaps the last thing Kade expected his old caregiver to suggest.“Don’t look at me like that, mutt!” Dagmar snapped, gnarled hands on her heavy hips as she glared back at Kade with just as much venom. “Those babies are normal wolf pups. They have darkness in their blood and souls. They are dangerous. They will always be struggling against that part of themselves that is borne from their hellish bloodline. And they will lose! Without th
When Kade had mentioned caravans, Thalia wasn't sure what to expect. As a kid she had seen plenty of tourists travelling from the likes of Germany or France with caravans or campervans. It seemed a bit claustrophobic but, in the summer, dozens if not hundreds would appear, trundling through the narrow streets of the old towns or villages or parking up in lay-bys near the sea. They were homes on wheels and yet despite being relatively small, they seemed to struggle to traverse the roads and streets of Greece let alone do it with any grace. But what Kade brought Thalia was very different from what she remembered about caravans. It was definitely a caravan, but it had wooden steps and a small veranda attached to it. There were no wheels either. Instead, the large rectangular structure was resting on concrete stilts. It wasn't alone either. There were dozens of similar buildings dotted around the clearing. Surprisingly there were no other people around though.
Lucien sighed and removed his sunglasses, pitch black eyes staring across the landscape, eyes finally coming to land on the abandoned building in the middle of the overgrown field. A cold spring breeze scuttled across the landscape while the sun sat in the sky occasionally ducking behind clouds as they sped across the blue skies, carried onwards by the gales. He would never confess it out loud, but Lucien was indeed impressed by his brother. He had always suspected Dante was capable of many things; however, the art illusion and planning a coup were not on that list. Of course, Lucien didn't have proof on the latter which was why he was here, hoping to have caught his brother off guard and found something to put in front of the council. But it seemed Dante had figured Lucien's plans out and had disappeared like a ghost, taking his illusions and his girls with him.The once grand manor was now nothing more than a bored up shell sur
