Chapter 8: Funeral 2

[POV: Kara Davis]

Echoing screams still hung in the air. Why did at times like this, everything seem to slow down? It made everything that was happening even worse. Two hulks of the man climbed up to Kara and grabbed her from either side, forcing her on her knees. Her hands pulled behind her back. Kara felt the weight of a leg pushing on her back. She tried to struggle, of course, but these men were bloody strong. Her body didn’t even twitch. Ria’s forsaken bastards.

The vampires pulled their head back, mouth open wide, their fangs sleek with drooping poison. The ever-present screams in the air increased. Some wailed, some collapsed, children clinging to their parents, eyes clamped shut.

“No, not them. They have done nothing wrong. Just kill me and be done with it. But please, have mercy on them. Kill me instead. Please, I’m begging you... NO... Please, don’t hurt them. NO.”

Despite her wails for mercy, nobody heard, even she barely heard it. It was drowned in the screams of the royal family being butchered. The vampires moved across the hall like snakes, weaving around the royal families. They raised their fangs and gnawed at their throats, ripping it off from their bodies. Blood sprayed and flesh splattered in all directions. It was a gore fest. The royal families looked like some kind of grotesque moving fountains that sprayed blood instead of water. Some vampires were so brutally strong that they not only just ripped their throat apart but the heads from their bodies.

In minutes, there wasn’t a single vampire whose fangs weren’t drooping with blood. To her surprise, the vampires did not drink a single drop of their blood, even though they seemed tempted to do so.

There were so many bodies spasming and twitching. Bodies without throats, bodies without heads, children’s bodies, blood gushing from all of them. Nothing wrenched Kara’s heart more than looking at a boy’s eyes no more than ten as he lay dying, hands clamped on his throat, blood seeping out of them. Except for what she saw next.

Her sister Kiara ran drenched in blood as everyone around her was massacred. The look of terror on her sister’s face was enough to make her lose her sanity. Kara summoned all of her willpower to cling to her sanity. She closed her eyes, renouncing the world around her. She fled the state of deepness.

Her soul floated in the dark void. Here, nothing existed, no feeling, no emotions. Time warped in this place. Spent an hour here and only few minutes would pass in the physical world. A thin arm length blue thread protruded from her chest. It was her connection. The thread was sleek, and it glowed with blue misty light. This thread kept all things alive. If severed or burned-out, it was death for the said person. Her connection was among the weakest, so using it wouldn’t do her any good. And only she knew about the connection in her village as she was the only one who had been to outside world.

Kara floated in the deepness for a while, trying to find peace and a way to improve her situation. But there was neither peace nor emotion in this place. And she could not even figure out a way to help her situation. So, she stepped out of the deepness and returned to the physical reality, where sounds of terror and reverted. She immediately regretted her decision. All the emotions flooded back to her. Her mind swayed with all emotions and she nearly lost her consciousness.

A few moments later, the entire royal family was killed, even her sister. She lay there sprawled, her head a meter away from her body. Not her! Oh! Undine not her dear sister.

“Where is your son? We cannot find him anywhere. What was his name again? Oh! yes, Silver,” Jones said.

She spat in his face. “Rot in hell.”

She was relieved at that moment that they hadn’t found her son at least.

“It doesn’t matter to me if you tell me or not. I know he’s still in this village, so we’ll find him eventually, so you’re completely worthless to me.”

“Let me, Sir Jones, it’s personal to me. I deserve it after what she did to me,” Vlad said.

Jones said yes immediately, giving no thought to it. Vlad promptly grabbed Kara’s hair and stared into her eyes. “Do you remember what you did to me the last time we met? I almost lost both my hand and my left leg that day.”

“You were the one who killed my son.”

Kara snapped at Vlad, staring back into his eyes.

“Your son! Ha, don’t give me that crap. He was an abomination. Human, lesser being. What you did was against the law. I served justice to our people.”

“Is it justice? What you did to my royal family? What you are doing right now?”

“...”

Vlad didn’t utter a word for a few seconds, but then he totally changed the subject.

“I’ll inflict a thousand times greater pain on you. You will watch every single one of your people die a painful death. Sir Jones could you help me with a dagger?”

Jones produced a stone dagger out of thin air and tossed it to Vlad. He caught the knife from the air and jammed it through Kara’s abdomen, twice.

Kara vomited blood, but she didn’t give any screams of pain. She didn’t want to give them that satisfaction. She pressed against her wounds as blood seeped out of them. Kara flooded her mind with different thoughts, trying to distract herself from the pain and the slaughter.

Merlin, it seems that we weren’t the ones you were searching for. We have completely disappointed you, haven’t we? It was the first thing that came to her mind.

Kara could only watch in horror. Some Lady she was. She wasn’t even able to save her own people. They hung the hundreds of villagers upside down. The vampires skinned them alive, then riddled her people with hundreds of slashes blood oozing from them. The vampire seemed to enjoy it. Wails of pain erupting from the very souls of her villagers filled the hall.

The vampires stored every drop of blood in some kind of vessel. They repeatedly did the same thing to every villager until they died slow and agonising death from blood loss. They did not spare even the children. It was a complete nightmare. Vlad, on the other hand, seemed to enjoy butchering the children even more.

Kara no longer had enough strength to even scream. She could only stare at what was happening with hollow eyes.

After a word from Jones, Vlad finally stopped. “You had better stop doing that. Children are innocent souls. They do not deserve that. Give them a clean death.”

Vlad's expression told that he didn’t want to stop. He complied anyway and even apologised, though sourly. So at least children were given a quick and painless death.

Jones frowned at Kara. “Lady Kara, for you loved a dead man and trusted someone like me when you were at your most vulnerable; the great water village, which is believed to be the most powerful village in the world, was absolutely massacred by such a weak army that would otherwise have been impossible. It was yours and your foolishness alone that contributed to the demise of your people.”

Kara could no longer bear it! Seeing her people's throats and heads pulled off, her sister headless body, and villagers tortured and killed with slow and agonising death and, not to mention the agonising pain in her belly. Her complexion became paler by the minute. Kara Davis died.
