Chapter 14

Author: Eli Sole
That evening, Carter arrived on time to pick up Layla.

When they reached their destination, Layla hesitated as she looked at the bright, flashy bar sign.

“Are you sure this is the right place? It doesn’t really seem like my scene.”

“What’s not to like?” Carter didn’t give her a chance to back out, pulling her out of the car. “My friends are already inside waiting for us!”

Left with no choice, Layla followed him inside. The thumping bass of the music hit her like a wave, mingling with the overpowering scent of perfume.

They maneuvered through the bustling crowd until they reached a VIP booth. Before Layla could process her surroundings, Carter tugged her into a seat beside him and started introducing her to his friends.

The swirling lights made it hard for Layla to focus, and she could barely make out anyone’s face. Forcing a polite smile, she nodded along, trying to keep up.

“So, this is the girl you rear-ended? She’s gorgeous! Don’t tell me you did it on purpose j

The atmosphere in the car was stifling. Even the sound of Carter nervously swallowing was painfully audible. Layla glanced back and forth between them, hesitating for a long moment before clearing her throat to break the silence. “Mr. Lucas, this all started because of me—” “Twenty years old and still can’t control himself? That’s his problem,” William interrupted her in a deep, displeased voice. Earlier that night, William had received a call from a bar informing him that Carter had been involved in a fight and taken to the police station. He had rushed out without even changing out of his sleepwear. Thankfully, Layla hadn’t been hurt, but if she had been, William might have broken Carter’s legs himself. “From now on, you’re not allowed to take Miss Xander anywhere. If you want to make a fool of yourself out there, fine, but dragging someone else into your mess is unacceptable,” William said, his tone dropping into something almost menacing. “But, Uncle William—” Carter

At the Perry family estate, Sean instinctively adjusted his shirt collar as he walked through the door, trying to hide the marks left from the previous night. His thoughts lingered on Xena, who was still at the villa. Before leaving, he had promised her he would return early to take her back home. Without wasting time, he got straight to the point. “Grandpa, what did you need? If it’s about Layla again, there’s no point in discussing it. Between her and me…” A teacup came flying toward him. Sean startled and dodged instinctively. The cup shattered on the floor behind him, pieces scattering everywhere. With that kind of force, it would have left him with a bleeding head if it had hit.Frowning, Sean spoke up, “Grandpa, I’m your actual grandson. Layla hasn’t even married into the family yet—she’s still an outsider. Why do you always take her side over mine?” “Shut your mouth!” Mr. Perry Sr. was furious, not sparing Sean a glance despite the visible injuries on his f

“Q” was an extraordinarily powerful international organization that catered exclusively to the upper echelons of society. As long as the money was right, there was no task they couldn’t accomplish. Within its ranks was a world-renowned medical genius, known for their miraculous ability to save lives and heal the seemingly incurable. However, the individual had an eccentric personality and only took on cases based on their mood. If money couldn’t fix it, getting it done became nearly impossible.Thinking about this, Levi sighed. “I’ll keep an eye on it for you, but your priority right now should be convincing Miss Xander to start chemotherapy as soon as possible.” William was silent for a moment before responding, “Understood.” After hanging up, William finally noticed the commotion downstairs. It was Carter, yelling as usual. He stood up, made his way downstairs, and followed the noise to the kitchen, where he saw Carter buzzing around Layla like an excited monkey. L

Carter stood by the entryway, watching the surveillance monitor, his expression darkening. He turned to Layla and asked, “Sis, it’s Sean, that scumbag ex of yours. Want me to go out and chase him off?” Hearing this, Layla paused briefly, utensils frozen in her hand. She hadn’t expected Sean to show up so quickly. William frowned, his voice low and steady. “I can have security take care of it.” Layla shook her head. “I’m already imposing on you by staying here. Let me handle this myself.” With that, she set her utensils down, stood up, and walked toward the door. Carter started to follow her, but Layla raised a hand to stop him. Seeing her insist on facing Sean alone, Carter reluctantly stayed behind, his eyes fixed on her retreating figure. Outside the wrought-iron gate, Sean dropped to his knees the moment he saw Layla approach. Without hesitation, he began slapping himself across the face. “Layla, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry…” Overcome with emotion, Sean kept slap

“Even though Uncle William rarely plays the good guy, isn’t this level of concern a bit over the top?” Carter wondered.…By evening, Layla woke up. The first thing she saw was an unfamiliar face, which startled her. “Who are you?” “Allow me to introduce myself,” the man said with a polite smile. “I’m Levi, William’s friend and his family doctor.” He handed Layla a business card. “I also work at St. North Hospital. If you ever need help, feel free to reach out to me.” Layla didn’t take the card. Instead, she responded softly, “I don’t need it.” “There’s no need to avoid medical care, Miss Xander,” Levi said as he placed the card on the bedside table. “Life is precious—every day counts. You’re still young. Don’t give up so easily.” Layla froze. “How do you know?” “I’ve seen your medical report,” Levi said matter-of-factly. Before Layla could react, Carter burst into the room, scratching his head and looking guilty. “Sis, about the car accident… when you were un

Xena froze in shock as Sean lunged at her, grabbing at her dress like a madman, muttering over and over, “This belongs to Layla… it’s Layla’s…” “Sean!” Panicked, Xena tried to hold down his hands, but it was no use. With a loud ripping sound, the dress tore apart. Sean wasn’t done. He grabbed the straps, clearly intent on stripping her completely. Terrified, Xena burst into tears. “Sean, what’s wrong with you? It’s me—Xena!” She had hoped her voice would snap him out of it, but Sean’s expression darkened instead. He suddenly struck her across the face. Caught off guard, Xena stumbled and fell to the floor, clutching her cheek in disbelief. “What… what’s gotten into you?” He had been perfectly fine when he left that morning. Why was he acting like a completely different person now? “It’s all because of you…” Sean pointed at Xena, his bloodshot eyes burning with rage. “If it weren’t for you, Layla and I wouldn’t have split up! She wouldn’t hate me so much th

“I want chicken ravioli soup.”Sean’s lips were pale, and one hand pressed against his stomach. Mrs. Lincoln immediately recognized the symptoms of his recurring stomach problems.“Mr. Perry, I can’t make that,” Mrs. Lincoln replied, her tone indifferent, still holding onto her resentment. “The flavor you like was something Miss Xander poured her heart into. Even the ravioli filling was carefully chosen by her.“To be honest, I could never match her level of thoughtfulness.”She did what she was paid to do—nothing more, nothing less. At her age, Mrs. Lincoln wasn’t about to go the extra mile without a good reason. She didn’t feel the need to explain herself. Just looking at Sean annoyed her, so she turned away and headed outside to busy herself in the yard. Sean sat there, staring blankly at the untouched breakfast on the table. Memories of the meals Layla had lovingly prepared for him flashed through his mind, and before he realized it, his vision blurred with tears.…At

Autumn had arrived, bringing cooler weather with it.Layla curled up on the sofa by the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the trees by the lake sway gently in the breeze, their falling leaves fluttering like delicate butterflies. After a rare few days of peace and quiet, she felt noticeably more rejuvenated.A knock at the door drew her attention. Turning her head, she offered a soft smile. “Mr. Lucas, not working today?”“It’s the weekend.” William walked over and handed her a cup of hot latte. “I just made this. Try it.” “Thank you.” Layla took the cup, cradling it in both hands. The warmth brought a sense of comfort and contentment. William didn’t leave immediately but stood there quietly, watching her. Although they had been living under the same roof for a while, this was their first time alone together. William stood tall before her, his usual formal suit replaced with a casual khaki outfit that added a relaxed air to his otherwise polished demeanor. The

Mr. Perry Sr. sat at the head of the table, with William and his eldest son, Wilfred Perry, seated on separate sofas beside him.Meanwhile, the two younger men—Sean and Felix Perry—were left standing.Sean was an illegitimate child, whereas Felix was the rightful firstborn. The two had been at odds since childhood, constantly competing in the shadows. Felix wasn’t as sharp as Sean, but he had received far more paternal affection. Over the years, Wilfred had taken him under his wing, guiding him in expanding the family's overseas business and personally grooming him for the future. Now that both had grown into capable men, their ambitions for the heir position were no longer hidden. Tonight, as soon as William arrived, he brought up one of Felix’s overseas projects—one that had helped strengthen business ties between the Lucas and Perry families. His words were full of praise, subtly painting Felix as a talented and promising young man. Mr. Perry Sr., delighted by the flat

“Sis, how can you think like that? You’re not going to die, you hear me? We’ll spend the New Year together—not just this year, but next year, and for many, many more years to come…” By the time Carter finished speaking, two silent tears had already slipped down his face. He quickly wiped them away with the back of his hand, then grumbled, “I don’t care what you say. Without my permission, you’re not allowed to die.” Layla chuckled. “Oh? And what, are you the Grim Reaper now?” “You’re still laughing!” Carter huffed, pretending to be angry. “It’s all because of your nonsense. Stop saying such ridiculous things!” “I think it sounds kind of romantic, though…” “Romantic, my ass!” Carter didn’t even bother arguing. He just peeled an orange and stuffed two slices straight into her mouth. “Eat more, talk less. Fill your head with good thoughts instead of all this death nonsense. As long as my uncle is around, you’re not going anywhere.” Layla chewed the orange, but it t

Layla was lost in thought, so much so that she didn’t even notice William standing at her bedroom door for quite some time. “What are you thinking about?” The sudden voice startled her. She sat up in a hurry, looking toward him. “When did you get here?” “I’ve been here for a while.” William walked over to the hospital bed and casually asked, “What did Kiera want from you?” “She seems to think Sean still has feelings for me, so she came asking me to put in a good word for her. She wants me to tell him to move on so they can get engaged smoothly.” Layla let out a mocking laugh. “Miss Jenkins is certainly… naïve. Imagine asking your boyfriend’s ex to help you win him over. Honestly, it’s a miracle I didn’t slap Sean when I saw him. “She wants me to play matchmaker? I was this close to telling her I’d rather curse Sean to never know love and die alone.“Besides, I don’t even think he still has feelings for me.” Layla paused, lost in thought for a moment. “It’s just

Kiera looked at Layla, her eyes shining as if she could see her past self reflected in her. “Now that I finally have a chance to be with him, I don’t want to give up. I believe he’s still the same boy I remember. Deep down, he’s not a bad person.” For a moment, Layla was almost convinced. Back then, Sean had indeed been dazzling—full of ambition and charm. She had once clung to that same illusion, hopelessly devoted to him. Until the day she finally woke up and realized that the man Sean had become was nothing special. A filter was just a filter—it was bound to crack one day. Some people were better left in memories. “Have you ever heard of the suspension bridge effect?” Layla suddenly thought of the psychological theory and blurted out the question. “Huh?” Kiera looked confused. “The suspension bridge effect is when someone in a tense or dangerous situation mistakes their heightened emotions for attraction to a person nearby,” Layla explained seriously. “Bas

“Go ahead and set your things down. Whatever you have to say, take a seat and say it.” Layla gestured for Kiera to sit, hoping to steer the conversation away from unwanted questions. For some reason, that question just now had made her heart beat a little faster. She had always thought her relationship with William was straightforward, yet the moment it was brought up, a strange sense of unease crept in. Thankfully, Kiera didn’t seem too eager to pry. After placing the gift bag on the table, she took a seat in a separate armchair. Her gaze landed on Layla’s knitted beanie, and a hint of pity flashed in her eyes. “Miss Xander, you’re so young. It’s just not fair that you have to go through this.” Layla chuckled lightly. “The world’s too crowded for luck to keep tabs on everyone. A few getting overlooked is just how it goes.”Seeing her still in the mood to joke, Kiera relaxed a little. “Don’t overthink things. Just focus on getting better.” “At this stage, it’s the

Layla answered each of Mr. Perry Sr.'s questions, casually mentioning that her father had already declared their ties severed and that she no longer had anything to do with the Xander family. Mr. Perry Sr. let out a pleased chuckle. “They were never worthy of being your family. From now on, you don’t need to waste another second worrying about them.“I wasn’t planning to invite them to my birthday celebration anyway.” He smoothly shifted the conversation. “But you must come.” Layla hesitated. “I don’t think I can make it. My chemo starts in a couple of days. I can’t leave the hospital.” “This…” Mr. Perry Sr. sounded genuinely disappointed. “That’s such a shame…” After a brief pause, he forced a lighthearted laugh. “No worries! Once you recover, you can come to my birthday party every year.” Then, his voice softened with a rare seriousness. “Layla, you have to get better.” She could hear the sincerity in his words—the deep, unspoken concern behind them. Not want

Fighting back the nausea, Layla forced herself to take a closer look at the body, carefully confirming the suspect’s identity.Once the police had recorded her statement, they dismissed her, telling her to go home and wait for further updates.Back at the hospital, Layla ran right into Xena, who was getting discharged. The Xander family crowded around her, fussing over her like attendants catering to a queen. The image was so ridiculous that Layla almost burst out laughing.“Layla Xander! You actually have the nerve to show up here?” Shane was the first to spot her, immediately stepping in front of Xena like a human shield. “What now? Trying to throw more dirt on Xena?“Didn’t you swear up and down that you had evidence? And now? Nothing. Just baseless accusations. Do you think the law bends to your will?” Layla shot him a look—one reserved for the truly dim-witted. “You’ve been here for days, and you still haven’t gotten your head checked? What a waste of a hospital stay

“We live in a lawful society.” Chris sighed, shaking his head. “No matter how powerful William is, even he can’t just take lives like they’re nothing.” “But…” Shane swallowed hard. “That guy is really dead.” “Enough.” Mrs. Xander finally snapped, unable to listen any longer. “Stop talking about death. It’s giving me chills.” Her gaze fell on Xena, eyes brimming with concern. “No matter what happens, we have to protect you. We can’t let you suffer any more harm. If Layla—” She caught herself, remembering how heartlessly Layla had severed ties with them. Her expression turned cold. “If Layla dares to slander you again, I’ll be the first to make her pay!” “Mom…” Xena’s eyes shimmered with emotion as she reached for her mother’s hand. “As long as you all believe in me, I don’t care what anyone else says.” “That’s your problem, Xena! You’re too soft. That’s why Layla walks all over you!” Shane huffed, his frustration evident. Xena shook her head, placing a gentle

“I…” Xena bit her lip, fear creeping into her voice. “I thought everything was going smoothly. I didn’t expect to fall into their trap. You have to help me.” “Layla is already as good as dead.” The man’s voice was low and cold. “All you had to do was wait. She’ll be gone soon enough. And you couldn’t even manage that? Pathetic.” Xena scrambled to explain. “I know I was too impatient! But help me this once, and I promise—I’ll listen to you from now on. I’ll do whatever you say.” Silence. Xena’s heart pounded in her chest, her grip tightening around the phone. If he refused, she had no one else left to turn to. Then, finally, he spoke. “He’s already taken care of.” The man's voice was low and chilling, like something straight out of hell.“Don't ever make me clean up your mess again. You're a damn nuisance.”The call ended abruptly.Xena clutched her phone, frozen for a moment before realization sank in. Then, her lips curled into a slow, triumphant smile.Relief
