Astrid's POV

There are new sides to Damien I have been seeing lately. The humble side of him that cared so much and spoke calmly to his workers on the phone. And then there was the other side, the charming side of him that hadn’t stopped teasing me the whole time in the car.

As we alighted from the vehicle, he quickly went around and opened the door for me, holding out his hand for me to take, which I did with a smile.

I guessed what I was yet to see from Damien was a smile on his face. I really had married a rock. Maybe Luke was right—he would never smile, and I would have to live with that. But my husband was already very attractive. I imagined how he would look if he smiled. Thinking about it made me blush.

Trust Damien to bring me to one of his restaurants. It made me wonder—did he really own every place in this city? No wonder he commanded such respect. It was a beautiful restaurant on the hilltop, with the most fascinating view of the city below.

The high-end restaurant was fanc

Astrid's POVNope, we didn't cuddle... sadly.I can't help but wonder, is there a speech therapy session for people who blurt out nonsense without thinking? Because I'm in dire need of one right away.I'm afraid one of these days, I'm going to tell Damien, "Hey Damien, you look so hot today. Do you know I'm a virgin? Maybe you can just take my virginity. I mean, you're my husband, right? I'm all yours."The thought of that does sound appealing, but no, I can't do something like that. Or maybe I can... then go dig the ground and bury myself right after. But on a serious note, I need to be careful. It seems like I'm getting too comfortable around him because—how could I ask him to cuddle with me? Goodness. My cheeks flamed again at the look in his eyes when I said that—shit. It was the first time I had seen such a look on Damien's face.Even when I had walked in and sat on his lap back on our honeymoon, he hadn't been that surprised. It seemed like he knew what I was on to at that time,

Damien's POV Could Astrid be seducing me? I want to believe otherwise, but it seems like she is. Lucky her then-it's working. If I wasn’t married to her already, I would have thought my rivals sent her to trap me and make me lose self-control over my business and everything else. Because every action of hers has been causing my insides to twist in a way that delights me so much I want it to keep happening again and again. For goodness' sake, I do not like women. Not since that bitch who called herself my mother did what she did to me. That reminds me-I need to ask about her prison sentence. I need to make sure I visit my dad in a few days. I mean my biological dad, in his grave, killed by my mother. No, she didn't kill him. But the guy was so obsessed with her that when she left to go on one of her many sexscapades, he rammed his car into a tree trying to chase her-dying instantly. Shaking my head, I pushed the thoughts away and focused on my work, typing away on my laptop-only

Damien's POVI had made a lot of bad decisions in my life, but letting Luke go on this small family meeting with his wife, and then letting Astrid work not only as an assistant to learn the ropes of being a CEO but as his replacement, was absolutely the worst decision of my life.We sat in a meeting room, but I couldn't concentrate on anything going on around me. No, I wasn’t staring at Astrid—even as the little cute thing kept biting the tip of her pen or jotting down notes in her notepad, focusing attentively on what was happening in front of her but not around her.I was too busy killing the men with my eyes.Everyone around the table was either very bold or very stupid and had a death wish because today, not only were they sitting in a meeting, but they were staring at my wife as though she were a piece of candy.I mean, yes, she is a piece of candy—for me only—so why would they do that right in front of me?Hendrix from marketing had just turned away, trembling in his seat when h

Astrid's POVThe cafeteria was empty. It seemed like no one else was out of the office, or maybe it was just because I had come here before lunch hours. I sat idly in my seat while the chef prepared what I had ordered. It was for me and Damien. I had come here asking them to give us whatever they had and some for him, but they had said he ate specially prepared food. So that meant I had to wait until his food was done.Well, it wasn't like I minded. I mostly ate natural produce, which I was sure had no chemicals, so it would benefit me too.Oh, grandma had spoiled me.That was the only thing Dad hadn't ruined for me, because he had let me choose what I would eat after the ulcer incident. He had been starving me for hours on end until one day, during a board meeting, I had puked on an investor. It was bloody, and the doctor had confirmed I had gastric ulcers. Only then had Dad allowed me to eat freely. That had been when I discovered Grandma always sent food for me, but it never reache

Damien's POVIt was hard staring Arthur Marshall in the face without taking out my gun and shooting him point-blank. No regrets. But then again, that wouldn't have benefited me, and I don't think Astrid would be happy if I killed her father. She had a heart of gold, and despite the wrongs this man had done to her, she wouldn’t want him to die."You have 5 minutes."I told him, marching straight into my office, his footsteps echoing behind me as he followed. Once inside, I turned to my receptionist. "Make sure Astrid doesn't come in here while he is here." She nodded, and I closed the door."Get to the point."He cleared his throat. "Damien, I am so... I would like to start with how happy I am that we are part of the same family, my son. This is the perfect opportunity to—""I am not a part of your family," I cut off his banter, a scowl on my face.Arthur looked confused, his brows narrowing. "I don't understand. Astrid's POVI ran into the ladies' room on the floor where Damien's office was located, slamming the door shut behind me and sinking backward until my back hit the wall.Guns terrified me, especially after seeing one—and the way Damien had one against Dad's throat. This was one of the reasons why I hated the city with all its violence. Life at the farm was very peaceful—a beautiful escape from the reality I was now facing. The news every day spoke about gun deaths, just like what had happened on that day when I was just a child. I didn’t think it was getting better. If anything, it was getting worse by the day.A banging sound erupted from outside the door, Damien’s voice soon making its way to my ears.“Astrid, please come out. It wasn’t what it looked like.”I could have believed him if I hadn’t seen it myself. It looked like he would have pulled the trigger at any moment.“Astrid, I’m sorry. Please come out so we can talk, alright?”I didn’t move but instead sank to the floor, hol

Astrid's POVI hated public affairs, gatherings, and crowds. "Hate" was a soft word. Perhaps "detest" would better suit it. But now, being married to a man like Damien Starkov meant I had no choice but to suck it up and attend with my head held high.Though I had been the one training to be CEO, Dad had always taken Fiona to every event, whether work-related or just for a lavish getaway. Meanwhile, I had been told to stay still and be a good girl.Good girl, my ass.It still baffled me how I hadn't noticed for so long. The signs of manipulation were always there, staring me straight in the face. Maybe I was blind, or maybe I just chose not to believe them at the time.I gripped Damien's elbow as we walked into the lavish and grand Victorian-style mansion together. Elegance radiated from every corner of the brightly lit ballroom–golden chandeliers dancing on the ceiling alongside models dangling from ropes, attracting the attention of all the guests. While hoping that none of the mode

Astrid's POVI thought the driver would obey me, but the man only shook his head. The bodyguard behind went out of the car."I'm sorry, ma'am, but sir has to get in."Rolling my eyes, I tried to open the other door, but it wouldn't budge."Open the door and let me out of here!"Why was I acting so bratty? I didn't know, but I couldn't control it. I just didn't like Damien being the center of attention for all those women.Just then, the door opened, and Damien slipped in, tapping the seat—not even uttering a word—yet the driver kicked off.I glared at the back of the man's head. I was going to make him pay for this. He should have just gone home with me and let Damien come after. I didn’t want to go with him.As the car kept driving, his silence kept taunting me."Astrid, what has got your panties in a twist? I know you didn't want to come to the party, but at least we left before it even got properly started," he finally said.Oh, so he can talk.I didn’t care. In fact, I didn’t even

Astrid's POV"W-What?" I stuttered. "I don't understand.""It's not about you understanding or not, Astrid. What matters is I've realized I have feelings for you. I'm catching them real fast. I want to try to have something real with you.""Oh," was all I could say. It wasn't an everyday thing to have your husband—no, contract husband—tell you he is falling for you.Damien's gaze was intense, making my skin crawl, and my stomach fluttered. When I had joked at the beginning that I would make him fall for me, I didn't think it would be this easy. I mean, I hadn't even started on that aspect yet. I was still thinking of what to do with Fiona and Adrian. How come he's already falling?"Damien, I think you're mistaken, okay? Maybe you think you're falling for me just because you haven't had, you know—"Damien shook his head. "I knew you would say something like this, Astrid. I am not mistaken about this. It is not new. Astrid’s POVWe sat at dinner that evening, but even though Myra and I had spent a few hours cooking to make it perfect, I couldn't eat. The cooking had just been a way to distract myself from thinking too much, but it had almost ended with me chopping off my fingers. Now, I had a little plaster around my middle finger on my right hand, which I prayed Damien wouldn't see and make a fuss over. Well, it's not like there's anything to make a fuss about. It's just a little cut. I've had worse.I was struggling to eat. The food itself tasted ugly in my mouth, which was a first because I deeply appreciated food and would never want to see it wasted. My actions didn’t go unnoticed because Damien started staring—so hard I almost slapped his face. Why couldn't he just go back to wherever he came from with his girlfriend? The clause in the contract did say I wasn't allowed to date or my money would be slashed. It didn't say anything about him not being allowed to. So, he hasn’t done anything wr

Astrid's POVI had just finished taking a bath when Myra knocked on my door."Hello, Astrid? Mrs. Tiffany is here.""Oh, Tiffany. Okay, I'll be right out," I said, hurrying to put on my clothes and go welcome her—in the right way this time.Five minutes later, I walked down the stairs to where she sat in the living room, wearing the same dress she had on when she came here before."Tiffany!""Oh my God, Astrid," she rushed toward me, hugging me as if we were mother and daughter. "Thank you so much, Astrid. From when I first saw you, I knew you really were an angel in my son's life. Now I can confirm it. I'm so grateful, Astrid."I nodded at her, and we both smiled."Do you need help settling in?""Oh, you really want to help me?" She acted so enthusiastically I wondered if loneliness could make people like this—how long had it been since someone aided her or kept her company?"Yeah, I can help you. I mean, I'm not doing anything now.""Thank you so much.""Of course, let's go. Did Dam

Chapter 45Damien's POVAstrid was making me break my boundaries. Yes, she hadn’t made me forgive Tiffany, but just allowing her to live in my house was a big step—one I would never have taken if Astrid wasn’t here to speak to me.Of course, I meant what I said. If Tiffany tried anything, especially toward Astrid, I wasn’t going to forgive her this time. She could hurt me all she wanted, but if she ever tried to touch Astrid or even look at her the wrong way, I would make her regret ever stepping foot back into my life.I was now supposed to call Tiffany and let her know she could stay with me. Astrid offered to do it, but I told her it would be best if I did it myself so I could warn Tiffany properly. Astrid would just end up being super friendly with the woman. As I was on my way down to the hotel where Tiffany was staying, my phone rang. Picking it up, I saw Arthur Marshalls number.“What!!”“Oh,. Hey, son-in-law.” The lewd man laughed on the other end.“Nothing is funny, Arthur. H

Astrid's POVI was almost at my room, just a few doors away, when Damien's wrist shot out, grabbed mine, and he slammed me up against the wall. It happened so fast before I could even blink."Damien, what are you doing?" I breathed out, gulping. He didn't respond immediately. Instead, he leaned in, and I heard him inhale. Wait... was he sniffing me?"I should be asking you that, Astrid. What do you think you're doing?""I'm going to my room."He rolled his eyes. "Yes, going to your room. Do you have to run to get to your room?""Uh, yes, I have to. The doctor said it is very important for me to run so that the exercise will make my body–""What doctor, Astrid? Stop lying."He flicked my nose. I frowned, crossing my arms over my chest. "Why are you following me?""Because you're running.""I was running because I wanted to get to my room and do something urgent."Damien smirked. "You didn't seem to be in a hurry when you were ogling me from the door to my room." Then, taking my earlobe

Astrid's POVThe whole room remained silent after Tiffany's declaration. Damien stilled on the steps where he had been ascending. I stared at the woman, watching her lower lip wobble, and soon, tears flowed down her face like a stream."Son, your mother is going. In a few months, I won’t be here anymore."I awaited Damien’s response to her, knowing that at this point, he would have to calm down and let them talk things out.But he faced ahead, his hands gripping the railing so tight I could see them turning red from where I stood. Then he uttered words I never thought I would hear someone say to their mother."Tiffany, dying?" He scoffed. "I’m afraid you died a long time ago to me. Let’s just assume you never came back and you’ve always been dead."Tiffany let out a loud wail while Damien continued ascending the stairs until he disappeared from her sight. His mother broke down, falling to the floor while holding her head in her hands.I rushed toward her, helping her up to the sofa wi

Damien's POVI couldn't wait to be done with all the work before me and go home.Normally, I worked on weekends. I worked every day of the week, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. And even when I got home, I still managed to do some work. But since Astrid came into my life, I had been feeling like leaving everything in the hands of others and just staying home with her.Which was why I was happy she worked with me now—because just being with her made all my problems go away.Unfortunately, this time, here I was on a weekend, stuck on a puzzle I was trying to fix regarding some people who had been trying to sabotage my ventures in different parts of the country. Most likely the same people who had tried to poison guests at my hotel. That wasn’t the annoying part. The annoying part was the idiot sitting across from me, making all the noise in the world and making me wish I could bash his face into the wall and not be held accountable."For the last time, Adam, will you stop being so noisy? Astrid’s POVI had just finished plating our breakfast when Damien walked downstairs, already dressed in his suit and holding his briefcase, ready for work. His cologne hit me hard as he stepped closer, my hairs standing at attention. He wrapped an arm around my waist and leaned his head into the crook of my neck, sending warmth curling up my belly."Damien, why are you dressed?""Work," his muffled voice mumbled."Damien, it's the weekend. Aren't you supposed to stay home? And by the way, after what happened yesterday, shouldn't—""Something happened yesterday? What was that?" he asked, making me pause. Was he being serious? A frown formed on my face. Maybe he really didn't remember what happened last night at the cottage.I guess I really have to speak to the driver about this. Or Auntie and Uncle."Nothing. Nothing happened. Have breakfast before leaving.""Sure, I wasn’t going to go without it anyway," he responded and sat down. I served him and served mine too. After eating, he k

Astrid's POVThe moment the first drop of rain touched my cheek, I knew I was done for. Damien still hadn't moved, and the thunder was rumbling so loud, I knew it would be a heavy rainfall."Damien, come on, we need to go."The cars rolled up to our side. The elderly driver of the car, whom I had been scolding to let me go, stepped out."Ma'am, is everything okay?"I turned to him, my tears mixing with the rain. One of the drivers brought out an umbrella and quickly covered us, to which I gave a nod of gratitude."He's not moving. I don't know what's wrong."The wind was howling wildly, and even the umbrella flapped around. I knew it wouldn't take long before it would get broken."We need to go home.""I'm sorry, ma'am, but I don't think it is possible for us to go home in this weather. The storm is too strong. We can rest at the cabin."I glared at the man. Was he crazy? That's someone's home. He didn't just expect us to intrude."Do you know what you're saying? We should drive home
