I was too dumbfounded to speak.
He was the patron? Did he mean he asked for his own death? Worst, he even paid for it!
"Are you making a fool out of me?" I asked with my coldest voice. I was very mad already but I could still not free myself from his grip. I was dying to punch him straight to his face.
"Who is making a fool out of you?"
I gritted my teeth. His eyes went down to my lips when he heard the grinding sound. He then smirked and moved his face closer.
"A little impatient, are we?"
"I don't know what game you are playing, but if you want a fight, then let's do that! Stop pinning me on this damn bed!"
"Why would I? I like it this way. The only first class female assassin in House of Spades, under me... on my bed... in my room."
"You are really testing my patience, aren't you?"
"Hmm..."
"If it's true you are the patron for this mission, then that means you want to die. Why don't you let me do my job? It would be my pleasure."
The mongrel just stared at my face as if he did not heard anything.
"Get off me," I demanded.
He shook his head. "You would attack me again if I do that."
"I definitely would. After all, you paid us for the job. It is unethical to fail to satisfy the patron."
"You are right, it's indeed unethical fo fail to satisfy your patron. However, as you said, I'm the one who paid you for this, the patron. And as of the moment, I can say that I'm satisfied. Case solved."
This son of a witch.
"Tell me," I challenged. "Have you fallen in love with me in our first meeting? Or maybe you just want to mess around and use my body for the night?"
The first sounds impossible. I myself wasn't a fan of romance, and this man did not certainly looked like he experienced having that kind of decent and intimate relationship with a woman.
"You are honestly frank, Elena."
"I've encountered many men in the past years, mongrel. I've seen them lust over my body. And I see that you are not an exception. You want me. You want to play."
His amber eyes turned darker.
I raised a brow at him. "Why don't you let me go so we can do what you want?"
His jaw moved. The corners of my lips rose wickedly. But when he spoke, the wicked smile vanished.
"Do you usually do this to your victims? You seduce them if you are left with no choice?"
It did not sound right. It was like he was making me see how bad I was for doing that kind of thing. But I could see no connection between the question and him. But the way his jaw clenched and his eyes darkened, it was like it was a big deal.
"That is not your concern anymore." Now my tone was back to being hard, cold and unfriendly.
"Sure," his tone sarcastic. "But I want to know."
"Know?" I let out a bark of laughter. "Why would you need to know those things, Mr. Alpha? I came here to kill you, and that's it. We don't need to be friendly with each other and know about personal things. We are enemies, may I remind you."
"Enemies," he echoed in a low baritone. "Tell me. If I considered you as my enemy, do you think you are still breathing up to this moment?"
"How would I know what is running in your head? If it's true that you are the patron, there is just one possible reason for that. Maybe you were very bored with your life, you were willing to pay someone to entertain you and you thought an assassin can do the job. Am I right?"
His eyebrow twitched.
"You want someone to play with. Why didn't you just hired courtesans? I'm sure you would love what they are capable of doing."
He hissed. "You are utterly unbelievable, Elena." The way he mentioned my name was like he has been accustomed with saying it for quiet some time. Or was I just observing things too complexly?
"Do you really think I'm that kind of man?"
"By the looks of it, you have the ability to do that."
"You know, you are not just frank but you are seriously absurd."
This damn talk is really sending me to my limits. I even thought of giving him a head butt to bet on my luck, but I know if I would do that, the one who would likely to be hurt is me. Wolf shifters are not just strong, but their body are almost as hard as granite. I guess I overestimated my capabilities this time. I had fought with a few wolf shifters before but they lacked skills in fighting, reason why even they were stronger, I was able to defeat them. But this man, he is an Alpha. I should have taken Henry's warning seriously.
"What are you planning to do, huh? Do you just want us to talk in this position the whole night?" I asked impatiently. If only I can blow him a fire, I would have burned his face by now.
"If it is all right with you, then why not?"
Oh this prick.
If only I have known that this is what's waiting for me here, I would have rejected a mission for the first time, or I could have given this one to Henry. This mongrel is not just giving me a head ache. He is killing me.
"You want to mess around with me? If I give you want you want, would you give me what I want as well?" I'm left with no choice but to bargain. I can't just lie here on his goddamn bed doing nothing, not while he is on top of me, the one who is in charge and dominant. Being controlled by a male is the thing I hate the most.
"You sure you know what I want?" he asked breathily.
Sure I do. Men are men, after all.
"I can do whatever you want as long as you give me the fair fight I want."
He contemplated for a moment. He is really fond of wasting my time. Once I have the chance, I will surely give him the most painful death I could give.
"What if," his brow raised. "I ask you to stay with me for a week? Still willing?"
"A week," I emphasized each word. "You want me to be with you for a week? As what? Your slave? Your courtesan?"
"As my Luna."
What? Is he serious?
"Are you crazy? You want me to be your Luna for a week? I think you have hit your head somewhere pretty bad."
In spite my defiance, he continued, "I'll be visiting my grandfather's pack two days from now to celebrate for his birthday. The last time, I promised to him that on his next birthday, I will bring my Luna. I don't want to fail him, so this is my idea."
"Pay for a woman, then. May I remind you that I'm an assassin. I'm not a stage actress. I can't do the pretend thing and I'm not willing to do it."
"You just said you are willing to do anything exchange for the fair fight you want?" The ghost of smile on his lips didn't go unnoticed.
"If you would do it, I will let you do whatever you want to do with me."
"Can I have your head, then?"
"Hm... giving you a fair fight is one thing. Giving you my head is another story. If you would able to defeat me in a duel, then I will accept my defeat and let you kill me."
"Are you an idiot? Have you even thought that I might just suddenly attack your back when I have the opportunity during that one week pretense?"
He smiled wickedly. "You can say I have precautionary measures ready for that."
"And what if I'll break the truce and kill one of your relatives while we are on it?"
"You would not do that. Judging your impatience, I don't think you would waste your time in other matters that does not concern you."
Such an observant.
"Now, do we have a deal?"
"You think I would agree to that nonsense? I would rather be killed right here and then."
"Ah," he groaned. "As expected, you are really hard to convince."
"Based on what I've heard about your kind, don't you have the "mate" thing? Have you not met her yet?"
If he has not, I doubt if he ever would. If I could not kill him tonight, then maybe one of these days. I will plan for a very good trap for him.
If you cannot be stronger over your opponent, then be wiser.
"I did meet her..."
I wonder what is wrong. But that is none of my business so why would I bother. Too bad for his mate. She could not stay with him longer since I will going to end his precious life soon.
"But she could not recognize me as her mate."
The sound of urgent footsteps caught my attention. Rage also heard it and looked at the door."A kid's footsteps," I said matter-of-factly. It is easy to identify a kid's footsteps from adult's. "Who is that? Your child?"Rage's eyes drifted back to me. "Do I look like a married man?""Why, are married men are only the ones capable of reproduction?"He grimaced. "Sorry to disappoint you, but your assumption is wrong, woman. I prefer to marry first."I didn't say anything. Why are we suddenly on that topic, anyway? It's not something relevant."Uncle? Are you there?" It was a cute boyish voice.Uncle. So it's his nephew. Rage looked like he was thinking what to do with me.I raised a brow at him. "What are you waiting for? Go to the kid. Don't worry, I won't show myself to him. I don't kill children.""Do you think I don't have any idea what you are thinking? You would escape once I get my eyes off
"What the heck is this thing?!" I stood and tried to push him to prove a point but it was like pushing a huge granite."A werewolf's band. That is the proof that you are under a contract with me.""You told me nothing about this!" I fired, very ready to attack him."I didn't tell you because I was under the assumption that you already knew since I thought you probably gathered some informations about me and my kind before you went through this mission. Why, did you not?"Yes, I gathered informations about him but I didn't go in details. I never had any idea about this stupid contract thing. I thought our deal is just purely verbal!"Explain to me how this thing works, you mongrel," I said sharply. I was close to reaching for his neck and twisting it. Or maybe I could just make his eyes pop out since I don't have the strength to twist his neck."As what I've said, it is the proof that we both agreed to in a deal, like a contract. However, you
"Thought you changed your mind," Rage said playfully when I arrived at our meeting place on the day of our departure."If only I had thought of another way to kill you, I could have changed my mind."He hissed but still smiling. "Honest as always.""I don't lie to make anyone feel better.""Yeah. Sounds like very you.""Now are we not going yet? I don't like chatting with you for long."He shook his head with a ghost of smile on his lips and mounted his horse. "You really don't care if you hurt someone else's feelings with your words, do you?""Do I have to care?"His lips parted in disbelief. I then reigned my horse towards the right way. Rage followed at once and coped up with my pace."You are so heartless.""I don't need to be kind to live." In fact, my principle is the other way around. To kill is to live. That is the only thing I need to do. Why should feel those unnecessary sentiments when all o
"You should rest for the night now. Elena must be tired," Richard Black finally said. I'm very bored of all the storytelling."Right. Let's now go, love?"I looked at Rage. This mongrel never really listens. It makes me want to punch him straight to his face right there and then."Dang, I'm jealous. I really need to find my mate soon," Tyler teased. As soon as I stood, Rage's hand was at my waist at once. I breathed, trying get a hold of myself. I should get used to this for the time being."Have a good night, Elena, Rage.""We will, Grandpa," Rage answered and he then led me out of there."Do you really need to hold me all the time?" I asked irritatedly once we were already inside the chamber. "And why do we need to sleep in one chamber? You should have said that we will be needing two!""Keep your voice low, Elena. Someone might hear you."I hissed and gritted my teeth."Look, as what I have told you
"Why do I have to come with you? You should have done this by yourself!"Rage's grandfather asked him to buy some stuffs in the town for the preparation, and he dragged me with him. I couldn't say no because Richard Black was in front of us."And your grandfather has a lot of subordinates. Why did he have to make his grandson do the job?""It was just an excuse."My forhead creased. "Excuse? What do you mean exactly?""He is thinking that you might want to take a look of the town. He wants us to give alone time together, if your pretty head still don't get it.""Why do we need to have alone time together? We have been together yesterday and last night. Your face is already giving me an eyesore."He winced as if he was hurting. "Your words stung, love."My expression turned grim."Do you really want to die?""If you would be the one to kill me, then it would be my pleasure." He winked. He is not really
"Want to come with us? I promised Tyler to join them on playing football," Rage said after he had given the stuffs we bought to his grandfather. "Why would I? I'm not interested on watching that kind of sport. I would rather stay on the chamber or walk around the forest." "But Aunt Cordelia is expecting you to come. She told me to ask you to go because she wants to get know you more. But..." he hesitated but still continued. "If you don't really want to go, I can just tell her that you are tired..." I sighed. "Fine. I'll come." His face lightened and the ghost of smile on his lips didn't go unnoticed. Later that noon, we went to the wide clearing beyond the forest for the football. Cordelia went too along with several younger women to watch the game. It looks like doing this is somewhat a hobby to them, something usual. I also noticed that all those younger men are friends of Rage. They all consider themselves as "brothers" which I find ridicu
"What is this?" My forehead creased at the big box beside me when I woke up the following morning. Rage was already up, buttoning his upper clothing."Box?"I glared at him."Good morning by the way. You look pretty with messed hair." He winked. This brute. Every time he is like that, I'm always reminded of those so many ways of how to torture a man."That is yours. It was sent ealier. It was said that it was from Grandpa. He said that is a gift."Gift? Why would I be given a gift?I grabbed the big box with a purple ribbon and opened it. My lips parted when I saw an olive green dress with intricate golden vines and crystal flowers on its bodice."Why did he give me a dress?'"I told you, it is a gift. And it was also said that you should wear that dress on Grandpa's birthday. It's his request."Damn. Why does everyone wants to give me a dress? This thing is obviously luxurious. Sure I can buy myself a dress like this bu
"Ready for tonight?"I don't have to turn to see who spoke behind me. I just bathed and when I went out, I saw the people very busy with all the decorations. It's our sixth day here and the day of celebration."Never been not.""That's my girl." He chuckled and went beside me. He was about to hold my waist like he always did for the past days but I shoved his hand away this time."What?""We don't need to be intimate. No one is watching. They are busy so quit with your damn acts. And may I remind you, I'm not your girl so don't call me that.""Really? But everyone else here knows you as my girl."For all he knows, his dear cousin knows our little secret. We didn't have an agreement to keep each other's secrets, but I guess both of us decided to keep our mouth shut. Why would I tell anyone what I saw, anyway? It's not my story to tell. I'm out of it so why would I concern myself? All I just have to do is to do my mission, and to
