Beginning of an ill-fated journey

Author's POV

Sophia rushed into an hospital with her mother.Her mother had been very sick but she had no money to take her to an hospital.The sickness has now gotten the best of her mother and she has no choice but to take her to an hospital.

" How may we be of help to you?" A nurse asked.

" My mum is very sick as you can see and she needs urgent attention " Sophia said nervously.

" Go and make deposit over there. Some tests will be carried out on her first inorder to know what the next line of action is " The nurse said and Sophia handed over her mother to nurses as she walked up hastily to the place where she was supposed to make the deposit.

 Sophia paid money for the tests and she went back to sit down while waiting hastily for the nurses to come out.She waited for thirty minutes before the nurse came out from the test laboratory.

" How is my mother?" Sophia asked nervously

" Please see the doctor in his office ma'am.Second office by the right " The nurse directed and Sophia went in the direction.It didn't take her much time before she got to the doctor's office.She knocked and she was told to enter.

" please sit down " Dr. Francis said politely and she sat down.After that ,he handed over the test result to Sophia who received it nervously.

" Tests showed that your mother suffered from diabetes,were you aware of that?" Dr.Francis asked. 

" Yes" Sophia replied shortly.

" Well,I wonder why you didn't bring her for any treatments until it graduated into this"Dr Francis said shaking his head and Sophia became scared. If only she had money,she could have brought her mother to the hospital to receive treatments,then the sickness wouldn't have become worse like the doctor is now implying.

" What's wrong doctor?" Sophia asked fearfully.

" From the tests carried out on your mother,it is revealed that the diabetes has now graduated into coronary artery disease " Dr.Francis said seriously staring at Sophia. Tears dropped down Sophia's eyes. 

" What should we do now doctor? Is it deadly?" Sophia asked nervously as sweats dripped down her forehead.

" Calm down, it can be managed with medications and specific treatments." Dr.Francis enlightened.

"I don't have any money doctor,pls anything you can do to help me will be highly appreciated " Sophia said with pleading eyes.

" We don't run this hospital for charity ma'am.Please see the nurses outside and get the bills paid so that we can start treating your mother" Dr.Francis said sternly as he continued tending to other things.Sophia took the hint and went out of the doctor's office.She walked to meet the nurses and they gave her the estimated bill that will cover for  her mother's treatment. She stared at the bill and opened her mouth in awe. One hundred thousand dollars? Where was she supposed to get that huge amount of money? Even if she does menial job alot of times,it still won't amount to that sum of money.

" Pls help me out,my mother must not die. I don't have such kind of money.Please help me nurses"Sophia begged pathetically.She knew she couldn't be proud right now because the only hope she has was to plead  for mercy.

" Madam!!!!  Get out of this hospital now before we call on security to send you out!!!You are constituting nuisance!!!" One of the nurses shouted angrily but Sophia wouldn't bulge as she kept crying and begging them to shower mercy on her.She was still pleading when the security officers came in and there her out of the hospital.

Sophia lingered near the hospital and she found her way to sneak into the hospital again. She walked to meet the nurses and as soon as they sighed her ,they had wanted to call on the security again but the presence of Dr.Francis stopped them.Sophia brightened  up immediately she sighted the doctor walking towards her. Her eyes glistened with hope and anxiety.

" What is going on here ? Madam,why are you causing a ruckus in this vicinity? This is an hospital,not a market place." Dr Francis said walking towards them.

" Doctor, how is my mother?" Sophia asked hopefully.

" Did the nurses not tell you no treatment will be given to your mother unless you've paid the bills?" Dr.Francis asked sternly.

" They did but i have no  money to pay up the bills.Please doctor, help me " Sophia pleaded as tears dropped from her face.

" Madam, we don't run a charity business here. Pay the bills and the treatment will start " Dr.Francis said professionally.

" Please doctor, my mother is the only family I have and I don't want to loose her too.Please help me" Sophia pleaded tearfully. Dr.Francis stared at her for a long time before finally breaking the silence.

" The best we can do for you is to start the treatment while you gather the money. That's the best we can do here" Dr.Francis said. 

Sophia knew there was no amount of pleadings that will make the doctor change his mind so she decided to take the shot.Atleast,her mum's treatment will start while she hopefully gathers the money.

" Thank you very much doctor,I really appreciate you" Sophia said feeling a little relieved.

"You have just few hours to gather the money.If we do not see you by the end of today,the treatment will surely stop" Dr.Francis said seriously and Sophia nodded hopefully as she ran out of the hospital.

Sophia's phone rang and she picked it. "Hello Sophia, where are you?" The feminine voice asked.Sophia recognized the voice to be the voice of  her best friend, Lucy.

" Am just coming from the hospital where I took my mum to,her sickness has gotten worse and now I have to pay a huge amount of money to get her treated.I have just few hours to gather the money" Sophia said tearfully.

" Don't cry my friend.Theres a job opportunity available if you are interested. It is the work of a nanny and the family is very rich.You will be able to get the money in no time" Lucy said seriously. Sophia didn't even think about it for long before she accepted. It's her mother's health we are talking about and she can do anything for her mother.

" I will forward you the address of the place so that you can apply for the job"Lena said.

" Thanks Lucy,I really appreciate you" Sophia appreciated as the call ended.She checked her phone and found the address.
