CHAPTER NINE

CHLOE:

Waking to a sudden warmth, I was drawn to the window with a wide smile, feeling relief that winter was finally relenting. The snow had stopped a welcomed pause in its constant fall. But I knew the warmth was more from sealed windows and a cozy duvet. Stepping outside promised a chilling experience. My neck ached from an uncomfortable sleep, prompting a self-administered massage. I couldn't help but wish Alistair might arrange for a masseuse.

A knock interrupted my thoughts as a maid entered with an expressionless face. We exchanged silent glances, neither of us willing to break the quiet. I questioned her purpose with my eyes, but she remained silent, almost as if sworn to frustrate me by her indifference. The unspoken tension between us left the morning tinged with unexpected emotions.

"So?" I questioned, my brow furrowing in a mix of confusion and irritation. The silent maid had managed to successfully ruin my morning.
