Yen, my ex-wife and the cause of pain and miseries.
She rises from her seat as soon as she sees me, mesmerizing me with her smile. Oh, dear, she’s still beautiful as ever. I step back, suddenly not knowing what to do.
Time hasn’t changed her. She’s even more stunning than the last time I saw her. Her smile grows wider, even with my reaction. And the graceful and elegant way she tilts her head just captivates me again.
“Zed, welcome back!” she greets, opening her arms wide for me.
“Yen,” I reply weakly, afraid that my voice will crack. “You’re here.”
I pace forward like a snail, realizing I’m not yet ready to face her. All those pains I try to blot out from my memories now surges back, threatening my self-control.
I stretch my arms wide, forcing a smile from my lips. She also throws her arms around my neck. I press her close to me. And no matter how hard I try; my tears still roll down into my face. I brush them away hurriedly. I can never allow her to know that I’m still badly hurting.
She doesn’t show a sign of breaking from the hug after a while, so I let her stay in that embrace. None of us dare to speak even a single word.
Suddenly, the door chimes sound, announcing that someone is entering the door. Yen then takes her arms away from me, making me curse at whoever is that person who interrupts our moment. I miss her so much, and I want her close to me for a few moments more.
However, it’s not surprising since we are in the coffee shop and clients are coming in and out, but I still feel annoyed.
I still love Yen. This, I am sure.
I smile apologetically at her before I turn my head toward the door. My eyes immediately pop out when I see the one I least expect to see. Entering the door in her sophisticated poise is Ella.
“Hi,” she greets, shifting her gaze between Yen and me, “I’m looking for you.”
I get uncomfortable because I see that flicker in Yen’s eyes. I don’t want her to think I’m already seeing another woman. I know I have all the right to do it since I am free now, but I’m not yet ready to release her from my heart.
I smile at Yen again and say, “I’ll take you to your table first.”
Yen shakes her head, smiles back, and waves a hand. “It’s alright; I’ll do it myself. I can wait.”
Without waiting for my reply, she takes her exit and goes back to her table. It’s when I see an empty cup in front of her. It only means she has been waiting for me already.
I gesture with my hand for Ella to follow me to another table. Where she looked haggard last night, she surprises me now with her stunning look. She wears a cotton mini dress, but the fabric tells it’s from a signature brand. I can’t help comparing the two women now. Though both are beautiful in their own ways, Yen is the conservative type while Ella is the sophisticated one.
“What is it?” I ask as soon as Ella takes her seat. I remain standing.
“I need to buy the latest iPhone model, but your card has a withdrawal limit,” she said, leaving me gaping at her. Her voice is loud enough for Yen to hear, making me shiver. I glance in her direction, wanting to see her reaction, but she looks busy fumbling on her phone.
My mouth hangs open. How can this woman boldly demand like she has all the right to spend my money? But I have no time to argue. Yen is here, and I can’t wait for Ella to disappear.
As if she has read my mind, she cuts me right away before I can open my mouth to speak.
“Don’t worry, sir. I will pay everything.”
To make her leave right away, I pull out a check stub from my bag, affix my signature in it, then slide it in front of her.
“Write the amount.”
She nods and says, “Thank you.”
I walk Ella to the door before I head back to Yen’s table. She looks and smiles at me, melting my heart inside.
“She’s stunning. I’m glad you’re with someone already.”
Yen must have concluded Ella is my woman because she overhears her asking for money to buy an expensive gadget. Of course, a mere acquaintance won’t be so bold to ask for something as lavish as that. And no stranger will be as generous as me to a woman he just met a few hours ago.
I open my mouth to tell her that she’s wrong, but the door suddenly opens again, and Ella’s head pops in. Yen also follows my eyes.
“Ella?”
“Umm, I’ll wait for you at the hotel for dinner.”
I stiffen, my mind failing to supply me with the right words. However, Ella takes my stare as a yes, and she leaves before I can refuse.
I pull out a deep sigh, pouring in it my disappointment that Ella has taken the scene and spoiled my moments with Yen. But then I realize why do I need to come clean? Yen is no longer coming back to me. She chooses Kim over me, and she already has a new family.
“I’m sorry to keep you waiting, “I say, smiling at her. I already know why she is here.
“It’s about what the lawyer asks me to sign.”
“What about it?” I ask, maintaining a poker face.
“Zed, it’s too much. I don’t deserve it. I was the one who left, and I don’t deserve anything.”
“I’ve been enjoying the income for three years, so I’m giving them back to you. I’m sorry I left right away. I should have settled your share, first.”
From her words, I know it sounds like I am still desperate to have her. Like I’m hoping that with that generosity, I can still win her back.
“No. I can’t accept that. Not that I’m belittling you, but you know about Kim’s status in the business industry. He also has coffee shops registered in my name. Jakara Blue Coffee Shops, remember? I manage them.”
I swallow hard. She’s slapping me the truth that my business is nothing compared to what Kim has given her. While XYZ Coffee Shops is in every mall and hotel in the city, Jakara Blue has gone international.
“But it’s Kim’s and his family. So I bet he has let you sign some pre-nuptial agreement.”
Yen smiles, and even if she speaks kindly, I can still see the sense of pity she hides in that smile.
“Zed, have you forgotten that I am the only heiress of my father’s fortune? So just save your business for your future children. And that money from our house and car, use it for your new house.”
I nod, hiding the bitterness inside. Yen doesn’t want anything from me anymore. She has already forgotten the past I shared with her. And she does it so fast like I was a curse in her life.
“Thank you,” I smile, pushing back my welling emotion inside. “I’m happy to know you are well.”
She chuckles, then talks happily about her kids. Maybe not intentionally, but she makes me realize how happy she is now without me.
Rubbing more salt to my wound, she adds, “Zed, how are you? Since you have set yourself free from your secrets already, do you still go limp in bed?”
I can't believe Yen will have the heart to bring this up. It's a subject I never want to talk to. It hurts me and my prideas a man."Yen, I'm sorry. Please leave that part to me," I say, a frown spreading on my face."Zed, please don't misunderstand. I'm just curious. Well, I want to know if you're healed already.""We can try it out and see," I suggest but laugh afterward. "Sorry, just kidding."She also laughs; the richness of her laughter soothes my aching heart."Honestly, Zed, I really wish you have overcome that part. It has made me guilty until now. After all, I am the reason why you have become like that.""Don't. Don't worry about me.""Have you continued your therapy?"Yen knows I had sessions with the same psychologist who had managed her before. The same psychologist who helped her restore her memories and the psychologist who helped me overcome the emotional trauma of my sexual pathology. And according to her
FLASHBACK The day I left the country was the most painful time of my life. Earlier that day, I received a letter from Kim’s lawyer that he was filing a case against me, and that was to nullify my marriage to Yen. I didn’t want to make it hard for them, so I decided to run away, thinking I could forget her easily. I had been sleepless for who knows how long, and words were not enough to describe the pain I was struggling to overcome. Yet, even if the pain was too much and I was tempted several times to slam my car into a post or pull it over a cliff, something was always holding me. And that’s my reluctance to let Yen live in guilt. Yet, I had set her free and didn’t want her to be responsible for my misfortune if ever I let my sorrows kill me. However, even if I had set her free willingly without a fight, it still hurt like hell. I didn’t even know how I’d survive for a day. I couldn’t seem to live without her, but it would be selfish
Ella's POV Four years ago... A waiter opened the door, and the strange gaze he shot at me sent shivers down my spine. I began to believe what I heard that my dad’s business partner was also not a simple man. “Good morning, ma’am. Are you Miss Ella Kaneko?” he asked, a weak smile forming on his lips. I frowned; I didn’t have to give my name to a stranger. But I got curious as to what extent the man I was going to see knew about me. Only a few people know that I am a Kaneko. The rest of the people knew me as Ella Sahara.” Without answering, I looked around, and I saw only a few people filling the place. It was still nine, so this was what I had hoped for. I was not too fond of crowded places, and even if Jamella was a five-star restaurant in Cambridge, I didn’t expect it to be less crowded. "Ma'am, this way, please," said the waiter I didn't notice was following me. He just sprung by my side, and I almost bumped into him. I glared at him, wrinkling my forehead at his know-it-all
I held his gaze for a long while, and that was enough to tell him I needed more explanation. But before he opened his mouth to speak, the door creaked open, revealing the waiter with a tray in his hand.Mr. Mori gestured for him to come over, and he stepped inside, placing our food on the table.“Let me do it,” Mr. Mori said, dismissing him with a hand wave. And the waiter hurried out, closing the door gently.Mr. Mori placed a platter of dried beef tapa, poached eggs, and some fruits and veggies in front of me. Next, he carefully slid the cup of steaming coffee beside the plate.“Let’s discuss over breakfast,” he said, handing me sachets of brown sugar. “I’m not sure if you like this, but I like caffe lattes.”“No problem with me.” I took the sachets from his hand, tore a pack open, and mixed its contents in my steaming cup. The heart design of the latte art instantly dissolved into the c
There must be a deep reason why he wanted to topple the CEO of Kim Yuan’s Microelectronics. From what I’ve heard, it was a huge company with several branches across Asia. I knew it because the company where I was working ordered products from them. I cast a discreet glance at Mr. Mori. Then, when I saw that he was finishing up the food on his plate, I took my free time to look up on G****e the name of the CEO of Kim Yuan’s Microelectronics. And my mouth hung open as I saw his name on my phone screen. Kim Mori. This couldn’t be a coincidence. I glanced at the man in front of me, and I saw some features about him similar to Kim Yuan’s CEO. “A relative?” I asked. I was never good at holding back my mouth. “Cousins.” “Oh, why do you have to compete with a relative instead of helping each other?” “He screwed me up. And as I said, I am already walking on a thin thread until it breaks.” He smirked, looking
My hands trembled as soon as my eyes reached the bottom of the page. My secretary took the tab from my hand, perhaps afraid I would drop it on the floor. Every mysterious word James told me before was all coming back, worsening the tumult I felt inside."This is a huge investment, James. Are you serious about your offer?" I recalled him asking this. I couldn't believe he would drop a business to a stranger easily, knowing he had given it a huge chunk of his time."Of course!" he answered seriously, making me frown in disbelief. "In the name of friendshipI had with your dad, and also because that wealth doesn't matter anymore."I then understood what he meant because, like dad, all the energy he spent on his businesses dissolved like bubbles as the government confiscated or closed them. And my dad was a businessman all his life, only that he linked himself with people who enjoyed doing things that were against the law.I even couldn
I took the earliest flight to Japan after the talk I had with the private investigator Menchie had hired. Even before his investigation started, he already knew so many things about him. That was enough to raise my hope of seeing James again. All I wanted to do was talk to him, know his current situation, and how I could be of any help. Unfortunately, I couldn't go to his family since they didn't know about me. I could neither meet any of his friends since he kept me away from them. In short, we lived in a different world that only the two of us enjoyed. Whoever he was in real life, I was sure he was the complete opposite whenever he was with me. I saw a kind and romantic person in him, loving me despite the short time we knew each other. I was happy with him despite not seeing him often. And that was the first time in my life that I didn't feel lonely after dad had passed away. I went down to the hotel lounge three hours after I checked into the Imperial Hotel. I was in awe of the
While sitting down on my couch facing the outside view from my suite, I decided to fly to the Philippines. According to Mr. Banzon, Mr. Kim Mori spent most of his time in the country because his wife's heart was in Cebu. It was perhaps because of the trauma she got in Japan that Mr. Kim Mori agreed with her. Taking her back after her traumatic incident only proved his genuine love for her. How I wish everyone could find his fulfillment in love just like these two, no matter how long the journey would be. Mr. Banzon told me that Mr. Kim Mori even made Kim Yuan's Microelectronics - Cebu Branch his base, taking all his best designers and tech geniuses with him. It was so heartwarming to know that he did it all for a woman. Booking an early flight that night, I arrived at Mactan International Airport before the crimson hues of daylight made streaks across the night sky. I didn't book a room in a hotel ahead of time, thinking that getting a room was never a problem in Cebu. I proceeded
