Chapter 4: The Cop

Nicholas introduced himself to us and gave us a short speech. In his speech, I expected him to talk more about his relationship with Mr. Rogers – his father – but he did not. Well, not bad.

After the speech, he stared at me for some seconds before leaving together with his escorts. Lena followed him, making sure I acknowledged how upset she was with me. But why upset? As if I did something wrong.

I heaved a sigh and watched as everyone else left the conference room. I didn't want to leave now because I needed some time to think, yes...to think about everything that had happened.

If only I knew he was the new CEO yesterday, I would have been more polite to him and wouldn't have taken his umbrella away from him. Although he was the one that willingly offered the umbrella to me himself.

Now what? It was obvious Lena was into him, though she denied it. Not concerned about that though, but why wasn't he acknowledging her except me? She was more beautiful, more sexy, I couldn't even compare myself with her.

Maybe he just needed his umbrella back, if that should be the case I would return it to him tomorrow because I didn't want any trouble. I didn't want Lena to hate me, we'd been friends for many years and she was the one that got me this job.

She lived in our neighborhood before with her parents, she was from a wealthy family. Her mother was a Surgeon and her father worked in a power plant. You could imagine how lucky she was, unlike me.

I sighed as I stood to my feet. Thus, I headed out of the conference room. The hallway was filled with Nicholas's scent, so breathtaking... I could remember finding myself under his umbrella yesterday. I smiled at the thought while walking towards the elevator.

In less than a minute, I was already on our floor. Lena wasn't around, she was probably in the CEO's office...exposing her cleavage for him to see. I wouldn't do that if I were her, not even when I am desperate for a man.

I headed to my workspace and continued my work. I crosschecked and edited all the works submitted to me before sending them to Lena via email. Hopefully, she would be able to skim through them today before transferring them for publication. Sadly, she wouldn't show up until it was almost time for home.

"Stella I am surprised," she said walking over to me. "How on this planet Earth did you know Nicholas?" she asked.

"Big boss? I never knew him, we only met yesterday. Why do you ask?" I uttered.

"Nothing, just trying to...never mind. Let's not talk about it" she said about leaving when I called on her. "Yes?" she wrinkled a brow. "Is there something I need to know?"

"No, well...just trying to say I emailed you all the works for today" I beamed at her.

"Okay, I will check them" she beamed back and left to her workspace.

When it was finally time for home, I waited until every other staff in our floor left...except Lena, then I got myself prepared and bade her goodbye.

She bade back, crooking a smile. She probably had a lot on her mind but would choose not to say anything, by the way, what did she have to say? That, why was the man she was crushing on staring at me? That would sound funny.

Anyways big boss was, can't deny it, pretty handsome. He was good-looking and I believed no sane girl would look at him twice and not feel anything for him, he was a charming guy and probably in his mid-20s.

I headed to the parking lot, hopped into my car, and drove back home. My mom had probably gone to work today, the house was empty and she wasn't the type that goes out anyhow. If she wasn't around then she was probably at work.

I headed to the fridge and took a can of coke and leftover pizza before heading to the sitting room to eat. I almost choke when the doorbell rang. I stood and walked straight to the door.

"Hey," said the person by the door as I pulled the door open. It was a cop. "Your mom around?" he asked.

"My mom?" I gulped. "No, any problem?" I asked.

"Nah," he chuckled. "Just came by to say hi"

"Oh, right?" I uttered still not satisfied.

"Yeah, sure" he nodded positively. "If she comes back, tell her Officer Mike came to see her"

"Oh, okay" I nodded in acknowledgement.

"Thanks!" he winked at me and left to his car, a police patrol vehicle.

As soon as he drove away, I went back inside and phoned my mom. "Hello, Mom," I said the moment she picked up the call.

"Hi, everything okay?" she asked.

"Yes, no! I mean, a cop showed up at our door looking for you" I replied anxiously.

"Mike?" she said rendering me speechless, she knew him? "It's gotta be Mike," she continued, "that as*hole has finally traced my home!"

"You knew him?" I asked out of curiosity.

"Yes, he's... a new friend?" she said.

"Are you asking me, mom?" I was puzzled.

"Oh, never mind! He's not a threat" she hanged off the call.

Alright then, I said to myself and shrugged believing if there was any problem she would tell me the fact that she wasn't the type that hide things. She used to tell me a lot and had severally sought my advice on things.

To see a Cop by your doorstep in Vincity, you have to be in trouble or the Cop is family or a family friend. I used to fear Cops, actually when I was a kid someone got shot by one in my presence. It was in the neighborhood, my mom and I were shopping for Christmas. Since then, Cops used to scare me.
