Chapter 5

A few days later

Wendy Lee

"I'm scared of staying with your mom, Alex. You know she hates me, and..."

"Come on, babe. My mom doesn't hate you, OK? She was just feeling insecure. She thought that you wanted me because of my money. She was scared that you'll eventually run away from me when you find out that I am going to..."

"It's ok," I cut him off before he can finish his statement. I know what he's going to say next.

"I won't stay too long there, I promise. I'm only going to be gone for a few days, and I'll be back before you know it. I'll come to get you from there as soon as I come back, OK?" He assures me, and I nod my head. We came back to New York three days ago, and just yesterday, he got a call that he needs to be in California today for a project that'll take them three days to round up.

"I know, but I don't want you to go," He sighs briefly and cups my cheeks in his palms.

"I know, babe. But you know I need to be there. I promise I won't stay there for long. I'll be back before you know it, OK?" He assures me, and I nod my head even if I'm not happy about it.

After I pack a few clothes that I'm going to be using at his family's house, we finally leave.

Arriving at the house a few minutes later, Alex left immediately after he dropped me off, and I'm now left to stay with my mother In-law. I just hope this isn't a bad idea.

Staying the whole day inside the room and scared of going out can be tiring, but not that I have a choice anyway. I don't know what she'll say to me when I go out there, and she didn't even come to fetch me, which means that my presence here is not needed. Gosh! I should've stayed back at home and dealt with the loneliness.

The sound of the knock on my door pulls my attention, and I stand up from the bed to get it. Pulling the door open, my heart misses a beat at the sight that welcomes me. It's Mrs. Thompson, Alex's mom.

"Goo... good morn... I mean evening, mo... Ma'am," I stutter nervously, while she glares at me with pure disgust written all over her face.

"It's time to make dinner, Wendy. You should go to the kitchen and make something for us to eat," She says to me, and I quickly nod my head. I have not been feeling too good for days now, but who am I to say no to her? Do I want to be thrown out in the night?

"Alright, ma'am," I bow to her, walking back into my room to change my dress and head to the kitchen.

"My son told me that you already know he has a brain tumor..." She pauses, and I stop on my track. My heart beats rapidly in anticipation of what she's going to say next.

"My poor boy..." She laments and scoffs.

"Don't think that I don't know what you're up to, Wendy. You know that I don't like you, none of his family was ever in support of this. It's just for some time, and you'll be out of my son's life," She reminds me, and I bite my lip.

"My poor son thinks that you love him just because..."

"I love Alex, ma'am," I cut her off. I should mind my speech, I shouldn't talk when she's talking, but there's no way I'll watch her say that I don't love my husband. That's the fact that I will always defend.

"Let's see how long you can last in his life then," She says to me before she turns around and walks away. I guess life here is going to be as difficult as I'd imagine it to be.

After working nonstop in the kitchen for hours, it's finally time to go to bed, and I retire to my room to get some sleep.

Crashing on my bed as soon as I come out of the bathroom after I had my bath, I reach out for my phone that's on the bed and face time Alex. His face pops on the screen a few seconds later.

"Hey, wife. I've missed you so much," He whines as soon as he sees me, and I smile.

"I miss you more, babe. How was the trip?" I ask him.

"It was boring. We just finished the first meeting, but I still need to get a few documents from one of my clients, so I'm waiting for him," He says to me, and I nod my head.

"Have you eaten? Are you feeling comfortable there?" He asks, and I nod my head although I'm not fine. I can't possibly be fine with his mom here making life difficult for me.

"Yes, I'm fine. You need to rest later, OK?" He nods his head.

"Let's talk later, babe. My client is here. Take care of yourself and our baby. I love you," He says to me excitedly before the call went off. Tears slid down my cheeks as I drop the phone on the bed and stare up at the ceiling. My life is messed up.

Finally pulling the duvet to cover myself up, I close my eyes and drift into dreamland.

I have no idea how long I have been asleep, but the bang on the door snaps me from my deep slumber, and I quickly sit up on the bed, rubbing my eyes. Of course, I need no one to tell me that it's my mother In-law that came to wake me up from sleep. It's morning already.

Dragging myself from the bed, I walk sluggishly to the door and pull it open, but the sight that welcomes me makes me freeze on the spot. Although I haven't meet her in person, but I have spoken with her on phone when I was still dating Alex, and she didn't sound like she liked me. It's Alex's older sister. When did she arrive here?
