Sophia’s POV
Since my divorce, I've been cautious about relationships. I've learned not to assume anything unless the other person explicitly expresses their feelings.
“Kayla, Daniel and I have a platonic friendship, okay?” I insisted. “You just find it hard to believe because you always end up dating your male friends!”
We both laughed at that. “Yeah, I guess,” she agreed, giggling.
“Remember, let's not speak recklessly,” I reminded her gently.
“Okay, my lips are sealed. I won’t ask Daniel, but I hope he eventually opens up to you.” I could practically see her grinning at the other end of the line, even though we were continents apart.
“Kayla!”
“Don’t worry,” she said with a laugh. “But really, I miss you. I’ll visit you there once my project at Sinclair Realty is done.”
“Wow, really?” I paused from my work, feeling a rush of gratitude and warmth.
“Yes! I promise! It’s going to be so much fun!”
We began to talk about all the things we’d love to see and do together once she was here in Paris.
“So when will you be finished, anyway?” I asked.
Kayla groaned. “I can’t wait, you know that? I hate working for your jackass ex-husband’s company! But they pay well!” She began to giggle and then sounded annoyed again after a while.
“It’s a good thing I never run into Elijah… Oh, and it’s actually because of that bitch who keeps turning down my proposals that I’m taking so long to finish!”
“You mean Serena?”
“Who else?!” She sounded really frustrated. “But I’m not giving up. She can’t reject my proposals forever.”
“Of course,” I agreed. “And besides, they can’t get a better deal than you for this project. Why don’t you try showing it to Elijah instead? That way, you’ll have direct approval. Anyway, he also studied art like us before he got an MBA.”
“Hmmm…” Kayla seemed to be thinking hard. “You have a point, even though I hate his guts.”
I went on. “He’s got a good eye for aesthetics, and he’s quite forward-thinking too. So go and consult him. When it comes to business, he’s more reliable.”
“Alright, I’ll do that.”
“Oh, but wait!” I quickly said, remembering something. “He doesn’t like it when people skip the department heads to contact him directly, so it’s best that you talk to his assistant Connor Hayes first. He’s in charge of approving such meetings.”
“Wow, thanks for the tip.”
“Sure,” I answered nonchalantly as I continued the sketch I was doing earlier.
“You know, Elijah can be a bit difficult to approach sometimes, but he respects people who are confident in their work. He values creativity and innovation, so if you can showcase that in your proposals, I'm sure he'll appreciate it. Just be prepared for some tough questions because he likes to dig deep into the details.”
“I see…”
“Also, Elijah has a soft spot for artists who are passionate about their craft. If you can convey your enthusiasm for your ideas, it might just win him over. And remember, he's a sucker for unique perspectives, so don't be afraid to think outside the box.”
“Uh-huh.”
“Oh, and one more thing. Elijah values transparency. If you can explain your ideas clearly and honestly, he'll respect that.”
“Okay, got that!” Kayla exclaimed with a laugh. “But I never realized you knew Elijah that well, considering you never really dabbled in the business and the two of you didn’t really talk much?”
“Oh,” I murmured, a tinge of sadness coloring my surprise. After only two years of marriage, I realized I knew Elijah quite well, but he never knew me at all.
Ding-Dong. Ding-Dong.
“Wait, there’s someone at the door,” I told Kayla.
“Okay, I have to go now, anyway. I’ll talk to you soon again!”
We said goodbye. I wiped my hands on my apron and went to open the door. When I saw Daniel standing there with a concerned look on his face, I was taken aback. “Hey, what’s wrong? Come in.”
He followed me inside, explaining that he’d sent me a message a while ago, but I did not reply. “Sorry, I jumped to conclusions, thinking something might have happened to you,” he said sheepishly. “Maybe I’ve been watching too many movies.”
I was touched by his sweet concern and thoughtfulness. “Probably,” I agreed, smiling. “But it’s fine, and I’m fine. Thanks so much for always thinking of me and caring for me.”
“Of course, Sophia,” he said gently as we faced each other. “You know I’m always here for you.”
“Yes, and I’m really grateful. Sorry you had to come over and check on me.”
“Nah, that’s nothing.” He grinned at me, slightly touching my cheek. “You’re forgetting I just live nearby.”
I chuckled. “I was talking to Kayla so I didn’t get to respond to your message. But since you’re already here, why don’t you join me for dinner? I’m almost done cooking.”
“I’d love that,” he answered, his gaze intensifying. As he took a step closer toward me, his eyes brimmed with affection.
I instinctively stepped back. “You know I really appreciate you, Daniel. I’m grateful for everything you’ve done for me.” I spoke slowly and carefully.
“But right now, I just want to focus on my studies. It’s challenging to juggle everything, given my condition…” I touched my baby bump. “I can’t consider anything more than friendship at this time.”
My words were vague, but both of us knew what I was talking about.
“Of course,” Daniel said at once, looking surprised and disappointed at the same time. “I completely understand.”
He looked crestfallen, so I quickly changed the topic. “Come on, help me out in the kitchen. I’m starving!”
Elijah’s POV I sat at the dining table, absentmindedly picking at the food on my plate. Thoughts of Sophia consumed me. Is Sophia with that man at the moment, enjoying a delicious lunch together in a romantic cafe? Or is she lovingly preparing a meal for him in their very own kitchen? It killed me to picture it in my mind. I remembered all the times she had cooked for me here at home, her dishes always made with such care and attention to detail. Yet, I had never truly appreciated her efforts. The guilt weighed heavily on me as I realized how much I had taken her for granted. The silence in the house only amplified my turbulent emotions, leaving me lost in a whirlwind of jealousy, regret, and longing. It’s been weeks now since I last heard from her. Each passing day only added to my anxiety. She must have changed her contact number, I thought in alarm. Was it because of me? It was hard to swallow and accept. How could she just cut off all ties with me like that? The next day
Sophia’s POVDuring the three months in Paris, I have gradually settled into the rhythm of life here and discovered some joys in my daily routine, such as going to the mall with my friend Daniel.“Don’t you need a new kettle?” Daniel asked, pointing at the display of kitchen equipment. We were strolling in the mall together after our classes at the university, picking out additional stuff for my apartment. “Okay, let’s check it out.” After a successful purchase, I was surprised when Daniel suddenly suggested that we visit the mother and baby section. But I knew I had to face it sooner or later, so I agreed. Would Elijah want this baby? I wondered as I strolled among the cribs, strollers, and tiny outfits. He probably wouldn’t care if he knew. I’m glad I went to Paris where I can be far away from him. “So what do you think? Will it be a boy or a girl?” Daniel asked, smiling and showing me a pair of really tiny shoes. “That’s cute!” I said, taking the shoes and examining them. “I ca
Elijah’s POV Is Sophia seeing someone? Could she be hanging out or laughing with another man right this moment? I kept wondering how she was, and what she was doing. The thought of her being with someone else made me tense. Even though I was busy discussing important matters all day long with our real estate partners in Paris, my mind had kept drifting back to her. Earlier, I’d driven around some of the famous universities in the city, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. It was a long shot, of course, but I just couldn’t help myself. It wasn’t a coincidence that I’d booked a hotel within the vicinity of Latin Quarter, which was a popular neighborhood for foreign students. I didn’t know yet where she was studying, but I could easily have Connor hire an investigator and look up that info for me. But I wasn’t sure yet if I was really going to push through with seeing her or not. As I approached my hotel room, I saw Serena waiting there outside with a mischievous glint in her twinkli
Sophia’s POV I was in a cafe just outside the school campus, enthusiastically discussing a big project with my classmates, when I noticed a luxury car parked on the other side of the street. My heart lurched when I saw a man step out and cross the street toward me. Elijah?! I thought incredulously, squinting through the glass window of the cafe. I had tuned out the voices of the group as I slowly stood up and focused on the man striding in my direction. Is it really him? My mind whirled with confusion. I gasped as he came into focus. Oh, my god. It’s him. What’s he doing here? Without thinking, my hand went to the bulge on my stomach. “Excuse me, I’ll be back,” I muttered to my classmates and felt an urgent need to escape. I had to get as far away from him as possible! Just then, I saw Serena come out of the car behind Elijah. Her beach waves blew gently in the wind as she joined him and linked her fingers with his. I can’t believe they came to Paris together, I thought bitter
Sophia’s POV Daniel barged into my apartment. “Let her go!” he shouted at Elijah. Elijah reluctantly stepped away. More tears filled my eyes. “What’s happening, Sophia?” Daniel asked as he came over to my side, looking like he wanted to punch Elijah. “It’s nothing,” I whispered, brushing away my tears with the back of my hand and trying to control my overwhelming emotions. As Daniel arrived, a wave of calm washed over me, settling my restless mind. In that moment, I realized that without him, I might have crumbled and confided everything to Elijah. Daniel turned toward Elijah. I could see his mouth twitching, as if he was trying to hold back his angry, sharp-edged words. His stance showed that he was doing his best not to cause any more trouble. And yet, at the same time, he wanted to protect me. Elijah began to calm down, to my relief. I could see him struggling to control himself. “You and I have got to talk,” he said sternly to Daniel. “Outside.” “Fine,” Daniel answered
Sophia’s POV I was glad when Elijah and Daniel came back in, so that I did not have to deal with Serena anymore. Yet at the same time, I was worried and curious about what they had talked about. Glancing at Daniel, I noticed he avoided meeting my eyes. Elijah, on the other hand, seemed composed but his gaze on me was intense, as if he had something important to say. “We better go now, Elijah,” Serena suddenly quipped, sounding more cheerful now. She grabbed his hand and began pulling him to the door. “Bye, everyone. It was great talking to you.” I looked at her incredulously, wondering how she could act like that after everything that had occurred. I let out a sigh of relief as soon as they were out of sight. I felt tired and stressed, so I plopped down on the sofa and leaned back, closing my eyes for a little bit. “Are you alright?” Daniel asked with concern, sitting beside me. I opened my eyes and gave him a faint smile. “Just tired, but I’ll be fine.” He nodded. “Maybe I
Elijah’s POV “Let her go!” Those were the words that came out of Daniel’s mouth when he stormed into Sophia’s apartment. The way he rushed to her protectively and how he looked at her lovingly, was just all too familiar. Sophia’s boyfriend, I thought bitterly. As I watched them interact, I could tell how close they were and how deeply in love this man was with my wife. I wanted to push him away from her, to punch him in the face repeatedly until he bled. But I knew it wouldn’t help my situation with Sophia. So instead, I looked away and took a few deep breaths, trying to calm down. I tried to control the surge of emotions that threatened to overwhelm me. Finally, I told Daniel, “You and I have got to talk. Outside.” As Daniel and I stood in the hallway outside Sophia's apartment, I couldn't hold back the question burning in my mind. "Are you and Sophia... dating?" I asked, trying to keep my tone casual despite the knot of emotions in my chest. He didn’t answer at once, so
Sophia’s POV “Oh, boy…” I whispered with great excitement and nervousness as I clicked on the email from Urban Next Design Studio. This is it, my dream internship! I truly admired their work and have heard how interns were always treated wonderfully and given great opportunities. I’m eager to meet new people in the field and learn from them. It’ll be amazing! Plus, I’ll get a monthly salary too! I scanned the email with eager anticipation. The company was impressed with my portfolio and wanted to schedule an interview during their presentation this weekend at the Goldwell Institute of Art. Excitement bubbled up inside me. Oh, gosh! Some good news, finally! The weekend was approaching, and I was looking forward to the design presentation on campus. It had become a place I loved, almost like a second home. Daniel was supposed to come with me, but he had to cancel at the last minute due to an important school project. As I entered the auditorium, I could feel the buzz of exciteme
