Chris’s POV

“Is dinner almost ready?” Emily’s voice floated from the other room, sounding cheerful as she finished up tidying the house.

“Almost,” I called back, stirring the stew simmering on the stovetop. “Just needs a few more minutes.”

Life here in the small, remote village in the French Alps had been both a blessing and a challenge. Our stone cottage was modest but sturdy, its walls thick enough to keep out the biting cold of the high altitude. The village itself was tiny, no more than a cluster of houses dotting the mountainside, isolated from any major town. There was no cell reception, no internet, just us and the few villagers who lived their lives undisturbed by the outside world.

As I stirred the stew, my thoughts drifted back to Sophia. Over the past year, I’d allowed myself to risk only one letter—one that I’d sent to her, hoping it would reach her without raising any alarms. It had been a gamble, and I hadn’t dared to send another since. The mob had eyes everywhere, and

Chris’s POVEmily and I sat in tense silence, keeping watch on the figures outside. The snow sparkled faintly under the moonlight, but the two shadows stood out, dark and ominous. My pulse was racing, the steady thudding in my chest matching the rhythm of Emily’s nervous breaths beside me.“Chris,” she whispered, gripping my arm. “What are we going to do?”I weighed our options, each one grimmer than the last. “We can’t just sit here,” I murmured. “We don’t know who they are or what they want, but we can’t let them get any closer.”She nodded, her face determined but pale. I motioned for her to stay back and quietly unlocked the door, taking a step outside. The cold night air bit into my skin, but I ignored it, focusing on the two men. They moved slowly toward us, and I braced myself, ready to fight if I had to.“Stay back!” I called out, my voice hard, aiming to mask the fear beneath. “You’ve got the wrong place. We don’t know you.”One of the men raised his hands, his voice surprisi

Elijah’s POV“Mr. Sinclair, we’re ready to move on to the project figures,” one of the executives said, snapping my attention back to the present. I’d been listening, nodding along as they reviewed quarterly reports, but my mind was elsewhere—always drifting back to Chris and Emily, to whatever slim chance remained of finding them alive.Just then, my phone buzzed. I glanced at the screen and saw Joe’s name. My heart skipped a beat. Joe was in France, tracking the mob’s every move, and he only called when there was news—either good or bad. And today, it could only mean one thing.“Excuse me,” I said, pushing back my chair and standing, doing my best to keep my tone steady. “I need to take this. Important call.”I stepped out of the room and quickly found a secluded corner, shielding myself from the murmur of the meeting room. Taking a deep breath, I answered, “Joe?”“Elijah,” came Joe’s calm but urgent voice. “I know how to contact them.”My heart raced. “Chris and Emily?”“Yes. I’ve

Chris’s POVThe cabin in the Ardennes was larger than our last place, with more rooms and enough space to actually stretch out for a change. Hidden deep in the dense forest, it felt safer—remote, isolated, far from the eyes and ears of anyone who might try to track us. The only sounds here were the whisper of the trees and the occasional rustle of wildlife in the underbrush.Emily and I were both exhausted from the journey, but Marc and Luc insisted that we couldn’t rest until they had set up the system they’d devised for us to contact our loved ones. So, as I unpacked, they busied themselves at the large wooden table in the center of the cabin, assembling the shortwave radio they’d somehow gotten hold of. Marc glanced over at me, his expression serious. “This radio,” he said, holding it up, “is the only way you’ll be able to contact Elijah safely. It’s low-tech but effective for our purposes. It doesn’t rely on cell towers or internet, which makes it difficult to trace.”Luc nodded,

Sophia’s POVI stood in Emily’s studio, amidst the familiar flurry —the soft whir of sewing machines, the quiet chatter of the design team as they pored over fabrics and patterns. It was strange, almost surreal, how much had changed in the time since Emily had gone into hiding. Yet, in some ways, it felt like she was still here, her presence still felt in every stitch, every design choice, every carefully crafted piece.Beside me, my best friend Kayla was flipping through a sketchbook, her focus sharp as she reviewed the latest designs. We’d both taken it upon ourselves to oversee the operations of Emily’s studio, to make sure her vision continued, even if she couldn’t be here. We owed her that much.I leaned in closer to Kayla, lowering my voice. “Kayla,” I began, unable to keep the excitement from my tone, “there’s something I need to tell you.”She glanced up, immediately catching on to the seriousness in my voice. “What is it?” she asked, setting the sketchbook down.“They’re ali

Sophia’s POVThe moment we arrived at the cafe, tension filled the room, tangible and suffocating, as if it had a life of its own. Morgana opened the door, her face pale, her hands twisting nervously in front of her. “Thank you for coming,” she said quickly, stepping aside to let us in. The normally vibrant glow she’d been emitting lately had vanished, replaced with an anxious energy. “I’m so sorry for calling you like this, but I couldn’t reach Elijah, and Lila… she was asking for the two of you.”“It’s fine, Morgana,” I said gently, though my heart was already racing. “What happened? Are you okay? Is Lila okay?”Morgana swallowed hard, closing the door behind us. “She’s in my office resting, but… here.” She handed me a crumpled flyer, her hand shaking slightly. “This was left outside the cafe this morning. And it’s… it’s been passed around the neighborhood. Posted on walls. Stuffed into mailboxes. It’s everywhere.”I took the flyer from her, my stomach sinking further with every wo

Sophia’s POV“THIS CAFE IS FOR WHORES!”The sight hit me like a punch to the gut. My breath caught as I stepped closer, the metallic smell of paint strong in the air. Morgana turned toward us, her face pale, her lips trembling.“Who… who would do this?” she whispered. Kayla let out a low whistle, shaking her head as she stared at the mirror. “This isn’t just a threat anymore. This is public humiliation.”My fists clenched at my sides as I struggled to contain my anger. “We shouldn’t take this lightly anymore. It’s not just a prank or a rumor. This is serious.”Clara stepped back, hugging herself tightly, her eyes darting nervously around the room. “Do you think… they were here recently? I mean, we’ve had customers all day. Anyone could’ve done this.”Lila’s face crumpled as she took in the hateful message scrawled across the mirror. Her breaths grew shallow, and her hand flew to her chest, her knees buckling slightly.“Oh my god…” she whispered, her voice breaking. Her eyes fluttered

Sophia’s POVAn hour had passed since the chaos in the restroom, and the cafe had settled back into its usual rhythm. The maintenance staff had scrubbed the mirror clean, the restroom remained closed off with a polite sign explaining renovations, and none of the patrons seemed to have noticed the earlier commotion. It was as if nothing had happened. But I knew better.I sat with Kayla and Lila in a cozy corner booth, surrounded by the chatter of diners that filled the air. However, our table felt like an island of unease amidst the calm.Lila stirred her drink absentmindedly, her gaze distant. “I just don’t get it,” she said, her voice heavy with frustration. “Who would want to do this to us? I don’t know of any enemies I might have.”Kayla leaned back, arms crossed, her sharp eyes scanning the room. “You’re a public figure, Lila,” she said pointedly. “It could be anyone. Jealous fans, internet trolls, someone trying to make a name for themselves by taking you down.”Lila sighed, her

Sophia’s POV“Gotcha,” I murmured under my breath, my heart skipping as I swiped through the photos on my phone. There she was, the woman who had called me Sabrina. She appeared in several shots, always on the edges of the room, blending in but never quite engaging fully with anyone. Her dark hair was neatly tied back, and she had the kind of presence that felt understated but deliberate.I didn’t waste another second. I headed straight to Morgana, finding her at the counter as she finished a conversation with a barista. “Morgana, can I show you something?”She turned to me, her expression still lined with stress but curious. “Of course. What is it?”I handed her my phone, scrolling to one of the clearest photos of the woman. “Do you recognize her? She was at the party. Apparently, she was invited.”Morgana furrowed her brow, leaning in to get a better look. “Hmm… she does look familiar,” she said slowly, her fingers drumming on the counter. “Give me a moment.”I waited, watching as h

It felt like the kind of morning that only came after surviving the storm.Weeks had passed since the chaos faded, and for once, the quiet didn’t feel temporary—it felt earned. I stirred slowly, eyes drifting open to find Elijah beside me, his hand resting lightly over mine. I studied him in the silence, taking in the softened edges of a man who’d carried us through fire and finally found peace.I leaned over and pressed a kiss to his cheek. His eyes fluttered open, and when they focused on me, he smiled sleepily."Morning," he murmured."Morning," I whispered back, letting my fingers trace the line of his jaw. "Can you believe we actually get to wake up like this? No chaos, no danger—just us."He pulled me closer and kissed my forehead. "I could get used to this."Just as I was about to say something, the door burst open."Mommy! Daddy!" Reese called out, followed quickly by Roxy an

Elijah’s POVWe weaved through the cracked streets, deeper into a part of the city that felt like time had forgotten it. Boarded-up windows, rusted signage, buildings collapsing in on themselves. This was the kind of place where ghosts lingered, and today, we were chasing one of them."We’re close," Joe muttered from the front seat, his eyes scanning the GPS on his phone. "This is the last possible location that fits Hugo's hideouts."Antoine sat beside me in the back, silent but focused. His jaw was tight, hands clenched. I still didn’t know if I fully trusted him, but I couldn’t deny this: he was here, risking his neck like the rest of us. And right now, I’d take any edge we could get.I have to find Grandpa George. For Sophia. When we pulled up to the burned-out remains of what once looked like a chapel, a chill shot down my spine. The stone structure still stood, half-charred, the wooden beams above blackened and skeletal. Nature had tried to reclaim it—vines curling around scorch

The floor creaked beneath every step, but I didn’t slow down. I couldn’t.Joe and his men fanned out behind me, covering corners, checking every room.We were running out of time. Then—A scream. My heart nearly stopped. It was her.I charged forward, slamming my shoulder into the door at the end of the hall. It burst open—and I saw red.Morgana was on the ground, gasping for air as Hugo’s hand squeezed her throat, and across the room, Sophia was trying to drag herself toward them, her face pale and streaked with tears.“NO!” I shouted, and without hesitation, I raised my gun.Hugo turned just as I fired. The bullet tore through his shoulder. He howled, stumbling back and releasing Morgana, who crumpled to the floor, coughing violently.I crossed the room in three strides and tackled Hugo before he could

Sophia’s POVThe first thing I felt was cold.A biting chill that wrapped around my arms and legs like a second set of restraints. Then came the pressure—tight, scratchy ropes cutting into my wrists. My head pounded like a drum, fog thick behind my eyes. Everything smelled like mildew and dust.My eyes struggled to make sense of the shadows. The room was dim, lit only by a weak bulb overhead that flickered like it couldn’t decide if it wanted to stay on. I was on a metal chair, hands tied behind my back, ankles secured to the legs. The air tasted stale and old, like the walls had been sealed off from the world for decades.Panic bloomed in my chest. My brother Chris. What had become of him?I jerked forward, straining against the ropes. “Chris!” I called, my voice hoarse and raw. “Where is he?!”I noticed some movement in the darkness. A shadow stirred in the corner of the room. I froze as a figure stepped out into the light. Tall. Gray-streaked beard. Sunken eyes like old coals. A d

Sophia’s POV“This is insane,” Elijah muttered, rubbing a hand over his face. “We’re relying on Antoine to lead us to Hugo. Does no one else see how crazy that is?”Joe, who had been checking messages on his phone, barely looked up. “We don’t have another choice.”I watched Elijah pace the room, his frustration clear. He wasn’t wrong, but I knew that if there was even the smallest chance of finding Grandpa George, we had to take it.Joe sighed and turned to Antoine. “You sure you can make him bite?”Antoine shrugged. “I know Hugo. He’s a cockroach—he won’t go down without a fight. But if he thinks his last hiding spot is compromised, he’ll make a move. That’s when we strike.”Elijah muttered something under his breath, but I didn’t catch it. Joe’s phone buzzed. As he studied the screen, he said, “We got something. Two possible locations.”Elijah straightened. “Then let’s move.”They all hurried out, and I had the sudden, overwhelming urge to call Elijah back—to make sure he’d pick up

Anyone suspicious? A car, a stranger?”Her red-rimmed eyes filled with fresh tears as she shook her head. “No… nothing. I don’t know how this happened.” Her voice broke. “George was just in his study… and then he was gone.”Elijah placed a hand on my shoulder, grounding me, but I could feel the rage simmering beneath his calm exterior. Suddenly, I remembered. It’s the name Sophia and Elijah had been trying to track down. The man who had supposedly changed Sophia’s life forever. And now he’s here. Why?!My hands instinctively balled up as my heart slammed against my ribs. Could this really be the same man?Hugo’s expression darkened with satisfaction as he took another step, exuding an air of quiet arrogance.“Well, well,” he drawled, his voice smooth but laced with something sinister. “You’re not as fun outside of prison, Antoine.”Phoebe’s grip on my wrist tightened. “Emily, let’s go,” she muttered under her breath.I wanted to. Even as Antoine stood in front of me, blocking my way, I forced my body to stay still, to stay firm.I squared my shoulders, my fingers curling into fists at my sides. “Move.”Antoine didn’t budge. His gaze shifted between me and Phoebe, like he wasn’t sure if I’d actually listen or turn and run.“I’m not here to fight,” he said, his voice calm. “I just want to talk.”Phoebe’s grip on my arm tightened, and her anger was immediate, sharp.“Oh, hell no,” she snapped. “What are you even doing here? Haven’t you caused enough trouble?”I inhaled slowly, forcing myself to stay calm. I wasn’t going to let him see me feeling nervous or affected by him. Antoine exhaled, his face unreadable. “I just wanted to talk.”Phoebe laughed coldly. “Talk? You took Jared, Antoine. Without permission. Do you have any idea what you put us through?”“I know,” he admitted. “I made a mistake.”Phoebe scoffed. “A mistake?”I stepped forward, my gaze hardening. “Please, Antoine.
