It wasn’t that tears were useless against Laurence. It was because they were from Zoey. Zoey thought that she had made her heart impenetrable by now, but she could still feel the sting. The pain wasn’t sharp. Instead, it was a gradual pain that spread everywhere, packing a bigger punch as time went on.

Soon, the pain was too much, and she began swaying on her feet. Zoey took a deep breath to regain control over her emotions. Wordlessly, she shut the door and returned to the secretarial quarters.

She placed the pending documents on her desk and told the newly hired assistant, “Please send these to Mr. Scott. We’ll need to use them tomorrow.”

The young assistant was terrified of Laurence. Usually, during meetings, she made sure to tuck herself into the back and barely peeked at Laurence. From what her colleagues told her, Mr. Scott had a terrifying aura. Even without being angry, he was still terrifying and there was an edge to his smile.
