As I walked into the restaurant, I could already tell that something was off. The manager was standing by the front door, his face tight with irritation. "You're late," he said, his voice stern. "You know we have a zero tolerance policy for tardiness."

I apologized and tried to explain that I had gotten stuck in traffic, but he wouldn't hear it. "I don't want to hear excuses," he said. "Just get to work."
