Chapter 4: Just A Spy

Okay this was more awkward than the time I went to my aunt’s wedding and ended up falling down with the chocolate fountain falling on top of me.

I ruined a very expensive dress that day…

But the worst thing was that chocolate was wasted…

Poor chocolate!

I cried for hours because so much chocolate was wasted…

But this was more awkward as I sat next to Dan with Paige on the other side, giving me angry looks.

I’m pretty sure that she would have thrown an axe at my head by now if the teacher wasn’t currently going on with the day’s lesson.

And well, if she had an axe on her…

After the whole fiasco at the party, I had run for the hills, pulling Dan with me so that he didn’t get the chance to tell people that I was lying…

I managed to explain everything to Dan during the ride home and he promised to keep his mouth shut. But he did ask me to explain everything to Paige and to clear the mess up as soon as I could.

He was afraid of Ryan kicking him out of the team somehow but he was more scared of Paige somehow murdering him…

Well, me being me, I procrastinated.

I spent the weekend in my room, with the curtains closed so that Ryan couldn’t see me while I ate tons of ice-cream and stared at the ceiling all day.

And maybe I did watch some TV too…

But now, it was Monday. I had no choice but to face everyone.

It was easy to avoid Mr. Popular since I was almost always invisible in school. But I couldn’t ignore the girl I shared the first class of the day with.

So that brings me to how Paige was drilling mines on the side of my head with her deadly glares.

To make matters worse, the school bell just rang, which meant that I couldn’t procrastinate anymore.

Paige was standing in front of my seat before I could even blink.

That girl really has some kind of superpower!

But I don’t think she uses it to save people…

“Paige! How have you been?” I asked, chuckling nervously when I saw her glaring at both me and Dan.

If I die today, I want everyone to know that I would like to be buried with all things sweet for my afterlife…

And no one is allowed to read my diaries! Just burn them, people!

But… I don’t have any diaries…

Well, that’s one less thing to worry about then!

“Since when are you dating Dan?” Paige asked through gritted teeth.

I sighed as I got up. The class room was empty now since everyone else already left for their next class while the teacher went to get her coffee.

“I’m not.” I told her. “When I was about to confess my feelings to Ryan, he told me about how he wants us to be friends again.” I said as I started packing my notebook and book.

“That doesn’t explain anything!” Paige exclaimed with a frown. She looked at Dan for answers but he raised his hands up in surrender.

He was under a sacred oath not to tell anyone the truth.

If he ever broke that promise, he would never see a jelly bean in his life!

“He also told me that he was dating Kaylee and I may or may not have panicked and said that Dan was my boyfriend.” I shrugged.

“Oh…” Paige trailed off as she took in the information. “So he’s dating the queen bi-” Paige started but I cut her off when I knew she was going to say a bad word

“Brinjal!” I exclaimed. “He’s dating the brinjal.” I told her, making her roll her eyes.

“So, what are you going to do now?” Paige sighed.

“Umm… I don’t really know…” I grimaced as I started walking out of the classroom with Dan and Paige following behind me.

“So you’re just going to pretend like Dan’s your boyfriend? Till when?” Paige questioned.

“Well, yes and till I come up with a better solution.” I answered with a shrug.

“Then you should better come up with a better solution soon! Ryan’s searching for me!” Dan scowled.

I turned around, walking backwards while facing my friends.

“I will, don’t worry.” I reassured him. “I’m just waiting for inspiration to hit me.” I told him.

Suddenly, I crashed into someone. I turned around to apologise, or if the person was not scary, then to scold that person for running into me. But I froze when I saw who I had walked into.

This is not a lucky day for me…

“Liv!” Kaylee exclaimed with her fake smile. I looked behind her to see Ryan watching us.

I bet he thinks that I am being mean by not forgiving Kaylee when she apologised with mere words when she’s literally made my life hell the past few years!

If she wants me to really forgive her, she would have to actually earn my forgiveness!

“Person I didn’t want to see!” I exclaimed with the same smile, copying Kaylee’s tone.

“Liv, I already apologised. What else do you want me to do?” Kaylee’s voice sounded hurt while she was giving me a bored look.

Ryan walked up to us and Kaylee’s face turned to the sad and hurt one that matched her voice.

Oh! Not even Ryan can make me hold back my rage, girl!

“If you really want forgiveness, then earn it!” I told her.

“And how can she do that?” Ryan asked before Kaylee could have said anything.

Well, that’s a really good question…

What can she even do to make me forgive her?

Buy me a house made of gummy bears?

That would actually be amazing but… No…

“She came up with so many ideas to torture Olivia over the years. Surely she can also come up with ideas to make Olivia forgive her.” A voice said.

I turned to find Hunter standing with his back against the lockers while facing us.

“No one asked you, Kingston!” Ryan sneered.

Woah! I thought that Ryan was kind to everyone…

Well, I guess good guys don’t like the bad ones… It’s the law after all…

But Hunter’s point did make sense.

“Actually, Hunter is right.” I spoke up, breaking the war of the deadliest glares between Ryan and Hunter. “She is the one who needs forgiveness. She should be the one to come up with a way to earn it.” I added.

Wow! My words sounded so damn meaningful.

Hunter smirked at Ryan who gritted his teeth before looking at me. Just as his eyes met mine, his eyes softened up.

“Well, that’s fair.” Ryan said.

“Did the Ryan Anderson just agree with my idea?” Hunter asked as he walked closer with a big smirk on his face.

“Shut up!” Ryan snapped at Hunter.

I frowned at the hostility in his voice.

“You’re becoming soft, Anderson!” Hunter chuckled.

“I’ll see you later, Liv.” Ryan smiled at me, ignoring Hunter as he walked away. Kaylee looked between me and Hunter with a frown before she followed behind Ryan without a word.

As Ryan turned the corner, Hunter turned to me with a serious expression.

“Are you seriously considering being friends with them again?” Hunter asked me.

“What is it to you?” Dan asked, pushing me behind him.

Well, this is weird…

“Scram, puppet!” Hunter said to Dan.

“I am not a puppet!” Dan fumed.

“Then why have you been hanging out with Olivia and reporting back to Anderson?” Hunter questioned.

I froze at that.

Bad boy said what?!

“Liv, he’s lying!” Dan turned to me with a panicked look. “Believe me, he’s lying! I’m your friend! Don’t you trust me?” Dan sounded desperate.

“Then why did I hear you telling Ryan that Liv was lying when she said that you were her boyfriend?” Hunter asked. “Well, among other things that I’ve heard.” He shrugged as a hint of a smirk formed on his face.

I know Hunter enough to know that he is never smug if he is lying.

And whenever he lies, he turns a bit serious and his hands start fidgeting.

But none of that is happening right now.

Which means that he’s not lying…

“You’ve been keeping an eye on Liv for Ryan Anderson?” Paige asked the question that was somehow stuck in my throat. “Since when?” She questioned.

Dan gulped as he looked between me and Paige.

“I’ll answer that,” Hunter said. “Since freshman year.” He grimaced playfully, hiding his smirk.

“L-listen, I-I can explain!” Dan stammered.

“Then please do. I’m dying to hear your explanation.” Hunter spoke up.

Dan glared at Hunter before turning to us.

“He’s the quarterback, guys! And the coach loves him! I’m not the best player on the field and if he said one word about it to the coach then I’m out!” Dan explained.

“So you sold me out?” The words flew out of my mouth as tears blurred my vision.

“It’s not like that… He was worried about you, Liv.” Dan whispered.

Oh… My… NO!

So one of my only two friends was just a spy?!

And that too, not the cool, saving the world kinda spy… The sneaky traitor kinda spy…

“I can’t believe it!” I shook my head. Dan started saying something but I stopped him.

“Save your breath.” Paige said. “We don’t want to hear anything from you now, puppet.” she wrapped an arm around my shoulders as tears started rolling down my cheeks.

My eyes went to Hunter.

“You knew about it from the beginning, didn’t you?” I asked him, already knowing the answer. But the way his smirk fell from his face, it confirmed it. “You are all the same.” I scoffed before walking off to my next class.

I just want this day to be over already…

And to pile on that, we haven’t even started with the second class of the day.

Just great!
