Chapter 6

Amelia felt apprehensive as she left the confines of the Salutary cabin, knowing that all eyes would be on her once more, she dread the thought. She knew that she’d hate every second of it. She’d always been such a private person but would now be paraded around in front of strangers. Feeling like the outsider made her heart pound even faster than when she first met Jax and Blake. If only she knew that Jax could hear her heart pounding as he led her outside.

Having Jax by her side made her more at ease. Walking through the compound still had her nerves on end, not fully knowing what to expect. She already noticed some dirty looks from the other female pack members.

Jax took it upon himself to show Amelia around the compound, even though her mother had offered to do so. She was glad that Jax was doing it as that would hold much more clout when it came to respect from others.

Jax pointed out where the Omegas without parents lived, which looked like a boarding house building. The cabin was huge and could easily hold fifty to a hundred people. Is this where she would be living? Alone with strangers who’d already taken a disliking to her. Seeing the fear cross her face, Jax said, “you’ll obviously live with your mother. There is no reason to keep the two of you apart and I’m sure you’ll feel more comfortable that way.” Jax once again felt Amelia’s heartbeat speed up as they walked past the Omega building.

Amelia simply nodded her head and agreed with Jax, when she was in fact leaping with joy inside. Just the thought of living there made her skin crawl. Living with her mother would be perfect as they had so much catching up to do. “I’m extremely grateful that you’re taking time out of your busy schedule to show me around the compound,” commented Amelia. She felt safe with him and enjoyed his company. “I’m sure that you have more pressing business to attend to than to babysit me.” She felt a slight blush brush her cheeks and hoped that he didn’t notice it.

“It’s only my pleasure. No inconvenience at all. We, Blake and I, want you to feel at home here. You are now, after all, part of the pack.” Jax had a radiant smile, one that lit up his chocolate-brown eyes. Eyes that Amelia couldn’t stop staring at. He truly was an amazing specimen of a man. Kind and thoughtful yet deadly when he needed to be. The way he fought off the rogue wolf still flashed before her eyes, causing gooseflesh to appear on her arms. The way he moved and stalked his prey was mesmerizing.

Eyes flittered their way as Jax and Amelia passed by the training area. Both boys and girls alike took interest in their stroll around the compound.

Amelia’s beauty was natural, she barely wore any makeup and the boys seemed to enjoy having a fresh beautiful face around. A new girl to fight over for affection or even just the time of day.

Amelia blushed as she realized that she’d caught their attention, a hue ever so lightly upon her cheeks once more. Her kohl eyeliner made her eyes even greener than usual. She wore her hair loose hanging down her back. Jet black and straight. She truly was striking to look at. A true beauty with a heart of gold.

The girls on the other hand didn’t look too excited about a new girl in the pack. They saw her as competition when it came to finding a mate and were already jealous that Jax was spending so much time and attention on her. Their looks almost bore holes through the back of her head, but she tried to shake it off and concentrate on her conversation with Jax.

She heard a boy mention something about ‘new eye candy’ as she walked by and Jax immediately gave him a look, with a slight growl, that scared him enough to make him immediately turn around and return to his training. A red face, embarrassed before his pack brothers.

Amelia noticed that the Beta wolves were nowhere to be seen, although they were there when she’d first arrived. They were most probably out for a run, a daily task, ensuring that the compound was safe and that no rogue wolves were lurking in the woods keeping watch on their pack.

The mere thought of turning into one of the Omegas scared the life out of Amelia. She had no intention of ever turning, although she knew the possibility was high.

“May I ask you a question?” asked Amelia shyly as she and Jax stopped just outside the dining hall, which was bigger than all of the other buildings in the compound.

“Of course. You may ask me anything,” replied Jax, a look of peace on his face.

“What will become of me now? I keep asking this question and no one wants to answer me.” Amelia felt quite frustrated and rightfully so. “I have no idea what I’m doing here and I don’t even feel as if I belong here. I feel like a fraud.” Amelia fiddled with her hands again, her nerves getting the better of her, anything to try and stop Jax from noticing them shaking.

“Now you become one of us. We are now your pack. Your family. This is your new home. You will live with your mother and learn the way of the wolf. You will train with the other Omegas and become strong and confident. This is your new life and the sooner you accept it the easier it will become for you. I know that it’s a lot to take in, but you’ll see that in time we will feel like family.” Jax felt sorry for Amelia, her world so suddenly turned upside down. Her plans for her future were no longer as she’d imagined them. “I know that this is a lot for you to take in, but I promise you that life will get easier as the days go by. You will still be allowed back into the human world, but only once you have perfected turning without needing to attack.”

“I feel like an imposter and an outcast,” said Amelia with a deep sigh. “I have no clue what I’m supposed to be doing.”

“We all feel like that the first time we find out that we’re a wolf. You are not the first one to join our pack after being bitten by another wolf. Some of the Omegas have gone through exactly what you are going through now and they’ve fitted in perfectly. You’ll soon begin to feel at home. Just give it some time.” Jax was a knowledgeable man and so easy to talk to. Amelia almost forgot that he was a Second and someone who she should be taking orders from, not having these private discussions with.

“What is this place?” asked Amelia as she pointed to the impressive building standing in front of her. It was a double-story building almost twice the size of the Omega one and looked like rather an important one.

“This is the pack hall and where we hold our meetings, pack meals, and festivities,” stated Jax, excitement in his eyes again. “This is where the family comes together each mealtime to bond and relax. You’ll be joining us this evening and then you’ll see that it’s not that bad being part of our pack after all.”

Amelia didn’t seem too convinced that she would easily fit in, but she at least had her mother to speak with during dining time. She already knew that the girls didn’t like her much. She saw the looks they’d given her when she walked past with Jax, she’d heard the chatter between them. Chatter which caused giggles and stares. Amelia immediately knew that making friends would be a difficult task.

“I’m not too convinced that I’ll find many friends quite easily,” said Amelia as she looked around the huge expanse of the room, noticing its grandeur. “The girls didn’t seem too keen to have a new stranger in their camp. Let alone a new girl. The last thing that I want to cause is unrest in the pack.” A wave of sadness overcame her. She hated feeling out of place or not wanted.

“The girls will quickly get over themselves and you’ll see that they don’t mean any harm.” Jax could sense that Amelia was soft-spoken but he didn’t doubt for a second that she’d easily make friends.

Jax wanted to keep her safe by all means. But he knew that he needed to let her go so that she could find her place in the pack. He just prayed that the girls wouldn’t be too nasty, as he’d seen that happen before.

But he would deal with that. You could count on it.
