Jake woke early, his mind quickly going over the events of the last 24 hours. He never thought he would see her again, but as soon as she stepped foot on the bus yesterday, he knew. He knew exactly who she was, but she didn't remember him. She had no recollection of saving his life all those years ago. But he did. He remembered the color of her hair. He remembered her smell. He remembered her eyes, the piercing stare she gave him and her determined strength as she pulled him away from danger.
But when she got on the bus, she didn't even glance his way. She barely acknowledged him until he went up to her at the stop. She didn't seem to feel the same pull that he did. Something was off, and he intended to find out what it was. Until then, he had to tread carefully. One wrong word and he was convinced she would run away from him faster than a cheetah on the hunt. He hadn't met anyone as skittish as she was.
Jake got ready and went to Firash's door, pounding on the wood as he opened it. "Rise and shine, motherfucker," he greeted his friend.
"Oh, fuck off," Firash replied.
"Get up, asshole. We need to grab the girls and get breakfast."
Firash groaned. He pulled his head up and looked at the clock. "You bastard, it's only 6 am, there's no way the girls are up already."
"I'll bet you $100 that Ellie has been up for at least an hour and Meredith is dressed by the time we get there. But, you're right, Sam is still snoring. You can wake her up," he wiggled his eyebrows at Firash. "Come on, man, I know that gets you hard."
Firash threw his alarm clock at Jake. Jake dodged the clock and laughed. "So what is it, man, she your mate?"
"I think so," he groaned.
"You think so?"
"Well, I don't know, I feel a pull but that's it," he answered. "Nothing like what Azule said it was supposed to be like."
"Well, considering your brother literally chased his mate down the interstate when she was in a taxi on her way to the airport to go visit her grandparents causing a major accident; I think it's safe to say that no one is going to have the same experience as Azule. He caused a fucking four car pile up."
"He thought he'd never see her again."
"He's a fucking psycho. A stalking psycho."
"Yeah, but she liked it."
The boys headed down to the lounge room, ready to trek up to the girl's dormitory. They walked to the girl's hallway and Jake smirked, gesturing toward Ellie and Meredith, sitting at a table in the entranceway, talking quietly.
"How long have you girls been up?" Jake asked nonchalantly.
Ellie looked at her watch, "Uh, 2 hours now about."
"Just 45 minutes, but I shower fast," Meredith added.
Jake held his hand out to Firash as Firash grumbled and pulled the money out of his wallet, handing it to Jake.
"What's that for?" Ellie asked curiously.
"Nothing," Jake and Firash said in unison.
"So, classes start today, what do you have first. Have you gotten your assignments yet?" Firash asked Meredith as he peered over her shoulder at the paper she was reading.
"No, we were looking at the newspaper. There was a shooting overnight just two towns over. It looks like some crazy man went on a rampage at a bar in town. Seven people died and 13 were wounded. It's insane." Meredith indicated the article she had been reading.
"When do we get our class assignments?" Ellie asked the other three.
"This morning after orientation. We have to go to the auditorium for orientation at 9, then we will get our schedules at noon and have the afternoon free to settle in on campus. Classes start tomorrow," Jake offered helpfully. He would know the way things worked since his grandfather was the head of their house after all. Ellie gave Jake a small smile of thanks and looked around the common room.
"Do you think we should wake up Sam? It's almost 8:30, she'll want to get ready before we head over to the auditorium." Ellie asked helpfully. Jake smirked at Firash and pushed him toward Sam's room.
"All yours, buttercup," he said with a laugh. Firash shot him a look and went off in the direction of Sam's room.
"What was that about?" Meredith asked Jake.
"Firash thinks he is Sam's mate. Don't tell her yet, he wants to be sure. Has she said anything?" Jaked asked the girls.
"No, but Sam's still 16, don't you have to be 17 before you find your mate?" Meredith asked helpfully.
"Yes, and that makes so much sense now. That's why he doesn't feel the full effects of the pull yet. She's still underage." Jake nodded in understanding.
"So, Firash is 17?" Ellie asked Jake.
"He turns 17 in three months, I imagine he only feels the slight effects because his birthday is so near. Sam's just turned 16, she still has 11 months to go until she turns 17, she probably won't feel anything for months yet." Jake explained. He was starting to understand that Ellie needed explanations for anything related to wolves, she was grossly unlearned when it came to werewolves, even though she was the daughter of two.
Ellie nodded, her face a mask of confusion.
"What's the matter?" Meredith asked her.
"Will I have a mate?" Ellie asked, her face a mask of confusion. "Normal humans don't usually have mates, right? So, a wolfless werewolf, is that even a thing? Do I even qualify?" Ellie sat pondering her situation. Jake noticed with hope that she hadn't burst into tears or hysterics during the conversation. They were making progress, albeit slow progress.
"Yes, you'll definitely have a mate." Jake confirmed.
"She will?" Meredith asked.
"How do you know?" Ellie asked. "I could just be an anomaly, I might not have a mate and then I could marry a normal human more like me."
Jake inadvertently growled, then covered his growl by clearing his throat. Meredith shot him a quick glance, but he was pretty sure Ellie didn't notice.
"I'm almost positive that you will have a mate, but time will tell. You'll likely know by the time you're 17 since most wolves in the area go to this school and we meet up with other schools for holiday events for the specific purpose of finding mates." Jake confirmed.
"We have events just to find mates?" Ellie asked in confusion.
"Yes!" Sam had joined the trio with a flourish. "Oh, just wait, Ellie! The Christmas Ball is so supposed to be the best event of the season, we get to meet up with the full pacific northwest packs and they let us drink. It's the best! Or so I've heard," she added with a blush.
Jake laughed at her antics. "So, did Firash wake you up nicely?" He asked innocently.
"No! The rat bastard, he jumped ON TOP OF ME!" She emphasized each word with a punch to Firash's arm. "I was sleeping so peacefully and then he practically smothered me with his overwhelming bulk! UGH!" Sam let out a fake protest.
"We should get going, it's quarter to nine and we need to get to the auditorium." Ellie mentioned as she glanced at her phone which had vibrated with an alert. Jake watched as she stood up, hit ignore on the notification and put her phone back in her pocket. "Everyone ready?"
They filed out and down the stairs toward the auditorium as a group, watching students from other halls join the flow of people walking to the auditorium. The group found seats and settled in for a three hour orientation covering all of the basics of life at the academy, which would be their home for at least the next four years.
Wednesday would mark the start of actual classes. Ellie lay in bed the night before, too nervous to sleep. She alternated between deep depression and mild hysterics. The depression was due to the realization she was still at The Academy and it didn't look like she was going to escape anytime soon. Once that realization settled in her mind, the mild hysterics started. She pondered the fact she would be spending the next several years at The Academy and she was sure she was going to make a fool of herself or fail miserably because she wasn't really a magical creature. It had been two full days since she had arrived at The Academy already and her parents hadn't shown up to take her home. She had been holding onto a distance hope that this was all going to turn into one big mistake, her parents would realize she wasn't really supposed to be here and they would show up and whisk her away in a flurry of hugs and apologies and copious amounts of chocolate. In fact, other than reass
"Hello, Elizabeth, it seems you've had quite the evening." Madame Richert smiled at Ellie, looping her arm around Ellie's shoulders and walking with her back toward the school. She was calm, with no panic or excitement marring her face. The tan wolf took off running back into the woods, presumably to help the other wolf now that Ellie was safe in the arms of the professor. "I'm so sorry, Madame Richert, I didn't mean to take off. I just, it's just that," Ellie stumbled over her words as tears finally coursed down her cheeks. "I just, I couldn't breathe. I couldn't breathe and I needed to get out. I needed out." She sobbed as Madame Richert pulled Ellie into her arms, holding her close. "I know. It's alright. You're safe now." Madame Richert said soothingly as she rubbed Ellie's back, encompassing the young girl's small body with her arms. "You're alright, you're safe. We found you." After a few minutes, Ellie calmed down and was overcome with embarrassment.
The week had gone by slowly and steadily for Ellie. After her run-in with a scary werewolf in the forest, she was relieved to find the rest of the week was mundane in comparison. Jake had avoided being alone with her Wednesday and Thursday, despite the fact they had several classes together. When she realized he hadn't told any of their friends about the chase in the woods, she breathed in relief, she wasn't sure when she would be ready for the fuss Sam was sure to throw over her adventure, but it wasn't today. When Friday afternoon finally came, she sighed in relief, glad that her classes were done for the week. She was looking forward to going to town with Sam and Meredith, looking through shops and trying out the Italian restaurant they'd been raving about all week long. Ellie was coming to realize that while she missed her friends at home, and she was desperate to return the first chance she got, her friends at the academy were pretty likable too. She had a lot in common
Ellie had never had pasta quite as tender and delicious as Fiorelli's. If she ate here every day, she was sure she would never have another worry in the world, except maybe how she would afford all of the new clothes she would need as her waist expanded. The food tasted like the embodiment of comfort and home, it was a warm hug in her stomach. She watched as Sam finished the last of her risotto and sighed in happiness. "I'm going to get fat," Sam said to the table. "From one meal?" Ellie asked. "No, but I'm going to eat here every day. Probably for the next month or two. I have dreams of this sauce," Sam said as she scraped her fork along the bottom of the plate, licking it clean. Firash closely watched her mouth; his eyes were trailing the path Sam's tongue took across her lips. His face was a mask of something close to desire before he shook his head and looked away. "You can not possibly be serious about eating here every day, it wo
Ellie raced back to campus, she thought how ironic it was that she had spent the last 16 years avoiding any physical exertion that caused her to break a sweat but since coming to The Academy, twice in one week she found herself sprinting as if her life depended on it. The last time she had been sprinting, her life had depended on it. This time she was sprinting as if Jake's life depended on it, which it did. A glimpse of the building flashed in her mind as she tried to work out where the shooter was going to be and when it would happen. The last time she had seen a vision, she had apparently saved a mall of wolves from a bombing but she didn't remember any of it. She didn't know if the vision seven years ago had happened right before the event or if it happened a few times leading up to it. Was the shooter going to try to kill Jake tonight? Right now? Did she have time to save him? Had it already happened? Ellie looked behind her and noticed with relief that Sam and Meredith
The doors to the elevator opened and two people exited the small confined space, their rubber soles making no noise on the roof as they crept toward the edge facing the faculty office building. They were dressed in all black, with masks covering their hair and faces. They walked with purpose toward the edge of the building, whispering to each other. They were easily twenty feet from the edge and Ellie and Meredith stood frozen on the roof watching them. The adrenaline that had pushed Ellie into action now froze her in fear, the threat was there, in front of her and it was up to her to handle it. She wasn't sure she was ready for a fight but the face of Jake swam through her mind and she knew she had to do something. There was no one else. The crates Ellie and Meredith were crouching behind were set at such an angle that the girls had a view of the faculty building from the left side of their position. Ellie could see the doors of the building where she had seen Jake exit in
Ellie walked back to her room next to Meredith, the two were behind Sam and Jake. Sam was asking Jake about the meeting he had earlier and whispering questions about Hannah, trying not to bring attention to her when Ellie was walking so close. Ellie's thoughts were focused on the image of Jake, lying on the ground, covered in blood. There was no way to prove her visions were true, there was no way to prove her visions actually happened since she was the only person who could see them. In fact, other than Jake, Sam, and Meredith, she wasn't sure anyone else would believe what she told them had happened in the vision, except Firash. Ellie wondered briefly where Firash had been during the attack and remembered that he was going to be in his room, picking out a movie for tonight. "Listen, you can't tell anyone about the vision," Ellie looked up as she spoke softly but firmly, realizing she didn't want everyone on campus to know. She didn't need stares and w
The weekend went by slowly. Ellie tried to avoid Jake as much as possible, which was more difficult than she hoped given the fact that they had all of the same friends at school. Hannah stayed for the weekend visiting Jake. Thankfully, Jake spent most of his time entertaining her away from everyone else. Ellie was able to avoid them, for the most part, in peace. Sunday afternoon brought rain, hard downpours, and thunderstorms. The lightning and thunder crashed in the distance and the trees swayed violently in the wind. Ellie sat on her couch, a blanket tucked around her and a book in her lap. She was reading Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities. It seemed appropriate given her mood. It was a story of unrequited love and sacrifice. When she saw Jake with Hannah, she knew how Carton felt as he watched the woman he loved with another man. She didn't know how it happened, or when it happened, but Jake had wormed his way into her heart and set up camp, for better or worse.
