Chapter 10: Settling In

Chapter 10: Settling In

Bella followed Luke to the elevator without further conversation, feeling sheepish, knowing she hadn't handled the situation professionally. Luke generously let the matter drop, casually engaging the bellman in polite conversation. At the door, the man paused allowing the pair to enter the suite first, bringing in their bags after them. The decor was beautiful, all blues and creams. The view out the window was breathtaking.

"I'll get my duffels. If you could just take the lady's things into the bedroom," Luke said. The bellman did as he was asked and was rewarded with a generous tip. "Thanks so much," Luke said before closing the door.

Bella finally spoke. "I'm sorry I was such a dumb ass. It seemed important at the time. I really can be professional, I promise," she swore.

"No worries," Luke responded. Heaving a large sigh, he dropped down onto the sofa across from the suite's fireplace. "Obviously, the bedroom is yours. This can be my bed while we're here."

"Why obviously?" Bella challenged. "I can take the couch."

Luke rolled his eyes. "Yes, Miss Debutante, I'm going to take the bedroom and make you sleep on the couch." He shook his head emphatically. "No way, I was raised better than that."

Bella was privately grateful, but wouldn't admit it, even to herself. "Well, if you change your mind, I can switch with you."

Luke snorted. "Yeah, right, princess."

Bella felt annoyed but figured it would be best just to let it go. "Alright. I want to change clothes before we head out. It's cooler here than I expected," she said.

"We aren't going anywhere," Luke replied with a yawn. "I didn't sleep on the plane like some people did. I'm going to crash. When I wake up I'll call my buddy so we can meet up with him tonight."

"Perfect," said Bella. "I'll just change and be on my way. I have some ideas I want to check out." She let herself into the bedroom and closed the door behind her.

I feel so off-kilter, she thought to herself. A walk around town will clear my head. I just need to get started on the stories.

She changed into a warmer outfit, more appropriate for the weather. When she emerged from the bedroom Luke was stretched out on the couch, snoring softly. She scribbled a short note, leaving her number in case he needed to contact her before she returned. Then she scooped up her bag, checking to make sure her GoPro was inside and headed out into the city.
