CHAPTER 6~ USEFUL

Verya watched with wide eyes as Sathe’s arm was taken over by the same dark, red fur the beast possessed. He was angry now, she could smell it, palpably feel it and if the beast took over his body now, then everybody would know that he was the culprit and they’d kill him.

She had to stop him, if she didn’t the...

Sathe lifted his hand to attack, but Verya grabbed it, forcefully separating him from the troublemaker. She grabbed his face, not missing just how completely black his eyes were. “Calm down, Sathe... don’t let the idiot get to you...inhale deeply, then let it go.”

Sathe looked at her, nodding his head and slowly, the whites in his eyes started to form again, the fur on his arm receded back into his skin and then he fell unconscious against her.

She hugged around him before he could fall, turning towards the idiot behind her. “Look what you did!”

“That’s not the problem here, did Sathe just growl at me?”

“And what if he did?” Verya scoffed. “Come help him on my back, he’s unconscious.”

“Me?”

“Then who the f*ck else?”

The boy glared at her, but begrudgingly came over to help anyway. He grabbed Sathe and Verya bent as he threw him onto her back. “F*cking useless, he fell unconscious because of that...”

Verya didn’t answer him, there was no reason to, instead she adjusted Sathe on her back, took up the bag he had brought out and went on her way.

Through the same forest which she had come from, she went, heading back to the camp where her knapsack was left. She took it up, effortlessly carrying both hers and Sathe’s in one hand and holding onto Sathe with the other.

She was glad that boy didn’t notice Sathe's transformation. It was quarterly complete, but the night was dark and so was Sathe’s fur and eyes.

If she wasn’t looking properly, if she hadn’t smelled the change, she wouldn’t have known it either.

Sighing, she walked back into the direction of the Barren Pack’s border; towards the north. She had gotten what she came here for, why stay any longe—?

“Hey you!”

Verya turned in the direction of the voice, finding the beta who had escorted her here earlier. “What?”

“The two men left of the ones who fought alongside you are at the pack hospital. They are injured pretty badly, but one of them said that they saw that you had managed to injure the beast. He said you went after it, are you not injure too? And what happened after that? Did it still get away?”

Verya sighed. “I did injure it, I shot it twice with my gun, once in the wing and then in the leg. I don’t know how it managed to fly, but it did. I followed it as far as I could, but it was pointless, it was faster than me...I’m sorry...I did not succeed.”

“It’s okay, you were far better than the men out there since you injured it.” His eyes glanced at Sathe. “Where are you taking him?”

“Home.”

“He’s a member of this pack, you can… why would you take him home?”

“He’s not a member of this pack if he lives in a haunted house so far away from it and he’s my mate. He’s not being treated as he should here, so I’ll be taking him. Thanks for openly welcoming me in, I’ll take my leave now.”

She turned her back to him and continued on her way. He was Sathe’s father’s beta, he was probably a jerk too.

<( ̄︶ ̄)>

Sathe eyes fell open, realizing that the night had turned to day. He was laying on grass, he could feel as it tickled his skin, however his head was on something else, something thick.

Looking up, he found that it was his mate, she was leant against the bark of a tree, still sleeping and his head was laid against her thigh.

She seemed uncomfortable, especially since her head was bent in a crooked position, but if he decided to move her, would she wake up?

Sathe sat up, turning to face her. He didn’t remember how they got here or what happened to his brother; Aron, but he was grateful she didn’t abandon him after realizing just how pathetic he truly was...

He was happy...happy to have been mated to someone like her. She was as pretty as a goddess...those lips, the same ones she had kissed him with last night looked more delicious than the tastiest foods, and her eyes...even though they were now closed, he remembered them; how domineering they were...

Goddess, she was just beautiful in every possible way, what had he done to deserve her?

Reaching for her face, he grabbed her cheeks in aid of adjusting her head, but ended up gasping in pain instead.

Her hand was so quick as it grabbed his wrist, squeezing it extremely tight. She then opened up her eyes and upon seeing him, she let go. “Oh Sathe...what were you doing?”

“I-I...” Sathe rubbed his wrist, looking away from her. “It’s nothing.”

“Lemme see...” she took his hand, assessing the already disappearing bruise that laid around it. “I’m sorry about that, but do you remember anything from last night?”

Sathe nodded. “We met Aron and then we were suddenly here.”

“You passed out, I had to carry you on my back here. But do you really remember nothing else?”

“No...did...did something else happen?”

Verya sighed, shaking her head. “No, nothing happened. Are you hungry?”

Sathe didn’t want to say yes even though he was indeed hungry. “I’m not.”

“But still, before continuing we should at least eat...we have a long way to go, it took me two days to get here, and it’ll probably take me four to get back since you’re with me.”

“Okay.”

“The woods seem lively, I could probably hunt and find something. There’s a lighter in my bag, you could find me some fire sticks, right?”

Sathe nodded eagerly, even though it was a simple task, at least he could do something for her...

It might not be much, but the fact that she asked him to do it had pride rising in his guts.

For the first time in a long time, he actually felt useful.
