NATHAN'S POV

"Sir, the media is—"

"For fuck's sake, I know!" I snapped, slamming my phone onto the desk. My assistant flinched but didn't move. "What now? I already know the things happening, you don't have to give me feedbacks that'll do nothing but annoy me right now!"

She hesitated, clutching a folder against her chest. "I wish I could heed your request, sir. I do have a job and it's to keep you informed about everything happening. More sponsors are pulling out. And—" she took a deep breath, "—the board is demanding a statement from you. They’re worried about the company’s image."

I sighed, tilting my head back while resisting the urge to run a hand through my hair. "Of course, they are. And what exactly do they want me to say? That I’m marrying someone who's supposedly the daughter of a goddamn serial killer?"

She paled, clearly not used to seeing me like this and honestly I wasn't sure if I had seen myself snap like this also. "I… I don’t know, sir. They just—"

ONIKA’S POV"You think I don’t know what you’re doing?"I paused mid-sip, stiffening from where I leaned against the counter as I met Nathan’s gaze from across the kitchen. He was standing by the door, arms crossed, his expression unreadable and his features dark.It was almost midnight and I had come back downstairs because I couldn't sleep and I thought some tea would help me be calm but I certainly hadn't expected to see the man still up and downstairs."What exactly am I doing?" I asked, setting my cup down lightly.Nathan exhaled sharply. "I know you, Onika. You can't possibly be this calm when everything you worked for is at stake "I tilted my head back, trying to maintain a cool expression even when I gripped the counter tighter "Maybe I am calm.""You’re not," he said, stepping closer. "You shut down when you’re planning something, Onika. I know that look in your eyes."I smiled faintly. "Maybe you don’t know me as well as you think you do. Two years are enough to change my l

NATHAN’S POV"Mr Nathan, this is madness."I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. Across the desk, Richard Foster, one of the event planners I had hired, was staring at me like I had just suggested we hold the wedding in a burning building. Why was everyone so worked up about my wedding?"It’s a wedding, not a business merger," he continued, tapping a pen against his notepad that was resting on the table. "You’re giving me less than two days to finalize everything. The media frenzy alone is making it impossible to secure vendors without doubling the cost, and half of them are hesitant because of the recent scandal and the fact that they won't want to be caught up—""Then offer them triple," I cut in flatly, arching a brow so I could look at him.Richard’s eyes widened. "Triple? Nathan, that’s not how negotiations work—""That’s exactly how negotiations work," I shot back. "You find their price, then you make it impossible for them to say no. That’s Business logics, Richard. I sugge

ONIKA’S POV"This is insane." I muttered to myself, pulling my hoodie lower over my head as I walked through the busy airport terminal. If Paranoia was a person, it would be me right now. My heart was hammering in my chest and beads of perspiration rolled down my forehead as I pulled my hoodie lower to obscure my face more.I had done it. I had actually done it.No goodbye. No explanations. Not even to Laura. That was one thing I was yet to come to terms with yet because that was so wrong but I knew what would happen if I had told her that. She would be the logical one and tell me not to leave, she would be the one that tells me to stay and something in me told me that if she urged me to stay, I would so that's what I didn't tell her. She would be worried sick. And Nathan…I swallowed, shaking my head as I moved toward the departure gates. Nathan would be livid. But I couldn’t let that stop me. Not when I was one step away from doing what I wanted right now.I had to disappear. For go

NATHAN'S POV“What do you mean she's not home?!” I yelled into the phone, my other hand running through my hair.Damien who was beside me looked just as panic stricken but he didn't show it, he was still as cool as ever but how I could be calm when Onika had suddenly disappeared. I didn't even know if she was safe and that was what truly bothered me.Was this what she was planning? That night…. Is this what she was thinking about? She was fucking smart and I would give her that. She had all of us fooled but I knew I couldn't blame her if she had actually chosen to run away. The pressure right now was too much on her but for her to not tell Laura? Damn, she was serious about this one.Laura could be in on it but as I saw her back into the store, tears pricking at her eyes as she looked at me with hope which quickly deflated when I shook my head, I knew she wasn't in on it. She looked just as struck on me.With a strangled sob, she leaned back against the wall, sliding down to the floor

AUTHOR'S POV Regina leaned back against the chair, her eyes shut close as she hummed to herself. She immediately sat up as Willow came into the room.“Are you okay? You look tense” Gina pointed out, her face contorted into one of mock concern.Willow collapsed on a nearby chair, burying her face in her hands. “I'm not fine, Gina. That bitch has ruined everything for my son” She lamented.Gina smiled to herself, this was going exactly as she wanted it to but she couldn't let Willow know that right now, even though they were practically partners in crime at this point, Gina knew that telling Willow about her plans would only lead to more questions which she couldn't answer right now because as usual, it would mean exposing herself.Who would have thought that it'd be this easy to trick everyone in the city by spreading a bit of fake but not so fake news. She wasn't wrong about one thing in that article but she would rather die than tell that to anyone.“Oh, Nathan can at least see her

NATHAN’S POVI gripped my phone so tightly it nearly cracked. My knuckles were white, my patience nonexistent as I walked back into my office."Barcelona," I muttered, rubbing my temples. Onika was in fucking Barcelona.Seriously? Once more, I found myself complimenting her despite my shitty situation because damn, she was smart.Who would ever think to go look in Barcelona? It was such an unlikely choice for her so I could understand why she chose it but the problem was I didn't know where in Barcelona and I had been sitting here for a few minutes, contemplating if I should go straight into action or just make sure I was right first of all. Make sure she was actually in Barcelona.I thought about the flight line that Mr Sam Damon had supplied to me when I had asked what flight she had flown so that I could keep a track on her so I'd know what time the plane took off to time when she would be back. Big fat lie.I forced myself to take a deep breath before dialing the airport. It rang

NATHAN'S POVI nodded at my assistant, giving her a slight wave of the hand before muttering. “Let her in”I had successfully kept my mum out because I knew what she was going to say but I really did hope that Regina wasn't here for something like that or I'd have to kick her out.I barely looked up when Regina walked in, but I caught the way she shot my assistant a sharp glare before plastering on a fake smile as soon as she walked in."That’ll be all, dear," she said sweetly, but I could tell she was pissed off that she had been kept waiting for about 5 minutes. Patience was just not one of her values. Even seeing her now as she had the guts to waltz in, made me sick to my guts when I remembered what she did.Regina turned to me, her smile widening. "Nathan."I leaned back in my chair. "Regina."She strode forward, sitting in the chair opposite me. She crossed her legs, dropping her small purse on my table, my eyes narrowing at the movement but I shut up about it unwilling to say an

ONIKA'S POVI drew my hoodie harder over my head, staring at the phone in my hands. The shop keeper kept telling me the details about the phone but that wasn't what I needed to hear, I just wanted him to tell me the fucking price so I could leave this place and go find a place to stay.Apparently getting houses at such short notice in this place was near impossible and I would have to go to the elite part of town because they would have more reservations. I had the money, I just needed to get this phone so I could head next to the hotel.Maybe I could ask this man for help on which hotel I could pick but the way he kept blabbing, urging me to buy the phone and bringing new suggestion had begun to piss me off not to mention that he was constantly cutting me off before he would pull out a better phone, eager that I buy a more expensive one.I couldn't blame him, I probably gave off the air of someone who could afford all these. With a sigh, I tugged my hoodie lower, gripping the phone i

ONIKA’S POVThat evening, I lounged in the bathtub, my body sinking into the warmth of the water as I rested my head against the edge. This was pure bliss. The day had been exhausting, from dealing with the exhibition controversy to witnessing Regina’s downfall in court.Still, despite everything, I felt… lighter. The weight on my shoulders had shifted, if only a little. Despite the exhaustion seeping in my bones, I felt…happy.I closed my eyes, letting the scent of lavender and chamomile fill my senses, my fingers tracing slow patterns along the water's surface. My thoughts drifted—to the exhibition, to my work, to Nathan. It was still strange sometimes, knowing we were engaged again. That after everything, we were here. Together.A sudden noise—footsteps, the faint creak of the front door—snapped me from my thoughts. I stiffened slightly, then exhaled, realizing it could only be Nathan.Shaking off my distraction, I reached for my bathrobe, wrapping it around my damp skin as I step

ONIKA'S POVLuckily for me, I managed to get myself together as I walked into my office the next morning. I spotted my assistant, Amara, standing just behind my desk, her phone in one hand, a file in the other. She looked up as I entered, her brows furrowed. "Miss Onika, I've been trying to fix this all morning."I set my bag down, sighing as I put a hand on my head. "What exactly is the complaint?"She exhaled, flipping through the file. "One of the pieces in your exhibition is being challenged for copyright infringement. Someone is claiming that your painting is a copy of their work."I stilled. "That’s ridiculous. Which painting?""The abstract one—Resonance. That's the one."I frowned. "That's one of my most personal pieces. I created it from scratch.""I know," Amara said quickly. "But the complainant insists it resembles their work. They sent an official letter and threatened to escalate it if we don’t withdraw it from the showcase."I inhaled deeply, rubbing my temple. "Did you

ONIKA’S POV"Wait," I laughed, his hand covering my eyes as he led me forward. "Are you ever going to tell me where we're going?""Patience," Nathan murmured in my ear, his breath warm against my skin. "We're almost there."I sighed dramatically. "I don’t like surprises, you know.""You like my surprises," he countered.I bit my lip. Damn him. He wasn’t wrong. We walked a few more steps before he finally stopped. I felt his fingers lift from my face, and I blinked against the darkness. The sight before me stole my breath.A picnic. But not just any picnic. A perfect one.A soft blanket spread across the grass, candles flickering around it, casting golden light against the dark blue sky. A bottle of wine chilled in an ice bucket, and an array of my favorite foods—cheese, fruit, chocolate, pastries—was set out elegantly. Nearby, an easel stood with a blank canvas, a second one right beside it.I turned to Nathan, stunned. "You... planned all this?"He smirked. "You sound surprised.""I

ONIKA'S POVMuseums had always fascinated me—the way history was captured in colors and sceneries. Every painting, every sculpture had a story, and I loved trying to decipher them. But today, I felt different. I was distracted.By him.Nathan walked beside me, hands in his pockets, his usual composed expression in place. But there was something off. He wasn’t entirely present. His eyes weren’t focused on the paintings or the tour guide’s explanations. They were on me. And somehow that scared me as much as it thrilled me.I glanced at him, raising a brow. “You know, you’re supposed to be looking at the art, not at me.”His lips twitched. “Can’t help it.”I rolled my eyes, unable to help myself. “Smooth.”He let out a quiet chuckle but didn’t say anything else.I turned back to the guide, trying to focus, but I could still feel his gaze on me.We stopped in front of a Renaissance painting, a grand scene of a woman reaching toward a man standing in a boat, his hand just out of her reach.

NATHAN'S POVThe way her eyes lit up as I pulled to a stop made every doubt I had about choosing this place for our date disappear. She looked ethereal with that goofy grin on her face.I knew she would love it. “Like it?” I couldn't stop myself from asking. She turned to look at me and her gaze softened before she leaned as far as the seatbelt would allow to press a soft lingering kiss to my lips.Instinctively, I froze for a brief second before I melted into the kiss and just as I was reaching a hand to pull her closer to me, she pulled away with a small smile. “What was that for?” I asked breathlessly. She shrugged. “Just to show you how much I love it” She chuckled seeing the dumbfounded look on my face.“I should really surprise you more” I muttered under my breath as I tried to unbuckle my belt.“Why? So that I can kiss you?” I heard her ask and I turned to look at her, my brow raised.“That and to see that priceless look of happiness on your face. I want to see it more often” I

ONIKA'S POV Laura came over to me and the first thing I heard was a low whistle from beside me before she spoke up. “I watched the entire conversation and I swear that I can't determine the outcome from the look on your faces. What the hell happened? Good or bad?” She asked, sliding in the seat beside me.I looked at her, a sad smile on my face. “Just there, I guess. He understands, I hope he does but we're cool. Maybe we'll have dinner again tomorrow or something or catch up properly”Laura sighed and placed a hand on my shoulder, her fingers digging into my flesh from how tight she gripped me. “Honey, don't punish yourself, okay? It's not your fault that you don't like him and let me tell you now. You don't have to feel shitty in any way for it, understood?” She asked, her eyes peering into mine as she waited for an answer.I couldn't help it, I laughed slightly at that and nodded to that. “Yes ma'am”She leaned back in her seat. “Man, who would have ever thought your love life wou

ONIKA'S POVI was silent for what felt like a whole minute, unable to bring forth any words. He looked embarrassed, his foot lightly tapping on the floor. “Should I leave?” He scratched the back of his neck sheepishly.I needed to get my shit together. “Okay… I mean no, don't leave. Sit with us”Laura glared at me as I said that and she stood up, carrying her bag. “I think I should give you two some privacy. Onika, I'll be at the counter, inform me when you're done” That was all she said to me before she walked off the counter, setting herself on the low stool.I looked back at Kent, forcing a smile. “So you're here. I wasn't expecting you to be here”He glanced down and back up at me again. “Iㅡuhㅡ I just wanted to see you and your employees said you weren't at the office again so I decided to try here and if you weren't here, I'd come over” He explained.“Yeah sure. ONIKA'S POVAs soon as I stepped into the meeting room, all eyes turned to me. The long table was filled with shareholders, executives, and key members of the project team. At the head of the table sat Mr Sam Damon, his hand resting on the table. As soon as he saw me, he sighed almost visibly, clearly relieved to see me.He stood as I entered, offering a small smile. “Onika.”I nodded in acknowledgment and took my seat. “Mr. Damon.”His sharp gaze studied me. “I would have called you in sooner, but I wanted to make sure you had time to recover from… everything.”His tone was polite, but the intentions behind his words were clear. Everyone in the room knew about the scandal, the drama, and the mess Regina had caused. Even if they pretended otherwise.“I appreciate that,” I said evenly. “But I’m fine. Business doesn’t wait.”A few murmurs of approval circled the table, but one of the shareholders, a middle-aged man named Greg, cleared his throat. “Actually, since we’re on the subject of
