Chapter 813

Author: Faith Shaw
When he sensed it, he knew immediately.

"Knowing too much isn't good," Micah warned her. "But you got hurt partly because of me, so I won't let it happen again."

He didn't want to disrupt Nina's life.

Nina thought for a moment. "It's okay. My life won't be easily taken here."

"Let's go," Micah said, continuing to escort her.

Nina frowned slightly. He avoided the topic of the Pharaoh, which suggested he was intentionally keeping it from her. Maybe he didn't trust her. Mentioning the Pharaoh didn't elicit any significant reaction from Micah either, hinting at a possible connection he didn't want to disclose.

Nina felt Micah could be a breakthrough. She should keep an eye on his movements without alerting him.

"Miss Nina is back."

As soon as Nina and Micah returned to the village, someone called out. They had been worried since she had been gone for so long.

Just then, Nash came out and saw her with Micah. His scrutinizing gaze landed on Micah. He walked over and asked, "Why did

Nina's attention to Micah irked Nash. He asked, "Why were you with him all afternoon?""I told you, I fell asleep there," Nina replied.Nash couldn’t understand, "Why didn’t you come back if you wanted to sleep? Being alone with him can cause rumors."Nina didn't like his tone, "How are we alone? There were kids there. Besides, Micah and I are just friends. Who cares what others say? This isn't the old days. Why are you being so old-fashioned?"Nash pursed his lips, his expression darkening."And you disappeared early this morning. Your people couldn’t find you, so I had to do something on my own. Is that wrong?""Fine, let's not argue."Nina sensed that continuing would only make things worse."I don’t want to argue with you," Nash said softly, trying to calm her.His tone was gentle, showing he didn't want to upset her. This softened Nina's anger, and when he knew how to back down, she couldn't stay mad. "I was with Arin. Micah asked me to stay and teach the kids after he le

"Our tribe acknowledges it. I am your long-lost sister!" Ivy emphasized.Micah replied, "You've been gone for so many years. How do we know the person who returned isn’t an imposter? If you don’t want things to get worse, stop interfering in my life!"Ivy clenched her fists tightly. This was the first time she had heard Micah speak so harshly. He doubted her! The realization made her anxious.Micah didn’t hold her in high regard but also didn’t want her affecting his life. He visited home infrequently to avoid her, hoping less contact would prevent his irritation. Yet she couldn’t understand.Micah walked away, leaving Ivy with a twisted, angry expression. Her fists trembled from how tightly she was clenching them."Miss, don’t take what he said to heart..." Wes tried to comfort her."Shut up!" Ivy snapped at him, "This is all your fault! If you had killed Nina, we wouldn’t have these problems. Instead, you failed, and now my brother is scolding me. You're useless!"Wes kept h

Nina noticed that Micah had left, so she walked over to his desk. There were several notes and some foreign books. As she flipped through the pages, a bookmark fell out. The bookmark itself wasn't particularly special, but the design on it seemed oddly familiar. She thought for a moment and realized that it matched the symbol on the clothing of the people who had chased her and Scarlett.Nina was shocked. Could this really be a coincidence? The symbol must be some kind of mark. Could it be that Micah was actually connected to the Pharaoh?"The noodles are ready," Micah said, bringing two bowls of plain noodles to the table. "Come eat."Nina quickly hid the bookmark in her sleeve and said, "Okay."They sat across from each other, the simple noodles served with a single egg. It looked very plain."I'm not much of a cook, but I hope you don't mind," Micah said softly.Nina took the utensils and started to stir the noodles, her eyes lingering on Micah. He ate his noodles quietly,

Nina was stunned. She held out her hand, showing the string of beads she always wore. "What did you say? This was your mother's keepsake?""Yes," Micah said, staring at her wrist."Impossible," Nina protested. "How can you be sure it's your mother's? It's just a string of beads. There could be many like it.""This is the only one," Micah said firmly.Nina stared at him in shock."You don't understand emerald, do you?" Micah began. "This region is known for emerald. No two pieces are alike in the world. Your beads are unique, which is why I'm questioning your identity. Are you really just Nina?"Nina clenched her fists and took off the beads, placing them on the table. "These weren't originally mine. They were given to me by a friend. He gave them to me..."Wilfred had given her the beads. He hadn't explained why, which was odd. These beads were precious to him. She remembered the words he had said when he gave them to her. "For your safety." That was all.Looking at Micah, she

Nash's eyes darkened. Last night, his condition flared up, so he couldn't be with her. He apologized, "I'm sorry.""I don't want an apology," Nina said, letting go of him.Nash pulled her back, "We were both angry last night. I was afraid we'd fight, so I waited for you to calm down before coming to you."Nina, in his arms, gazed into his eyes. He couldn’t hide the truth in his eyes. Relationships would need time to adjust and he didn’t fully understand what was on her mind.Nina spoke, "Next time I'm mad, you need to comfort me. It doesn’t matter if it works right away. You need to try. When I ask you to comfort me, it doesn't mean I'll instantly forgive you. But if you don't even try, it shows you don't care about me. Over time, I'll start to think you don't love me."Nash was taken aback, "Is that how it is?"Nina sat down, "You didn’t know? Women may not say it, but they have a lot on their minds.""Lesson learned," Nash replied. "I don’t have much experience. If I do someth

"Missing? How could Arin suddenly go missing?" Nina's heart tightened with worry.Sean sobbed, "I don't know. I don't know. She said she was going into the mountains to hunt wild boar. She never came back. She's missing...""What on earth was she thinking, going to hunt wild boar?""She wanted to cook. Arin said there wasn't enough meat at home and she wanted to bring back a wild boar and cook something nice for you. Miss Nina, what should we do? Where can we find my sister?" Sean's tears and snot mingled as he cried.Nina, trying to stay calm, found the situation strange. She asked, "Where are your parents?""Dad and Mom went into the mountains to look for her, and they haven't come back yet.""Then we should go look too." Nina remembered something, "Right, we need more people. Let's get help.""Miss Nina," Sean continued to cry, "I just saw Captain York take some people out. Is it too late?"Nina went outside to check and found that more than half of the village's vehicles we

Her expression hardened. Instead of retreating, she stepped forward boldly, stopping a few paces ahead, and said coldly, "Come out, I know you're nearby!""Mmph... mmph..." A muffled sound came from behind a large tree.Arin emerged, her hands bound, her face pale, struggling desperately with tears still in her eyes. Behind her was a man who sneered at Nina, "I've been waiting for you. If you don't want her to die, come here quietly and don't make a sound."Nina laughed, "You've gone to great lengths to catch me. If you'd just told me you wanted me, I would've come without all this trouble.""In the village, it wasn't easy to catch you. We had to use some tricks," Wes sneered. The previous assassination attempt by Wes had failed. If they had gone into the village, they would have been swarmed and killed before they even found Nina. He had timed Captain Nash's departure perfectly and knew that Arin and Nina were close. This allowed him to capture Nina successfully.Nina looked a

Wes's expression changed. "How do you know? Who told you?"Nina squinted, pretending to know more than she did. "I know a lot. Otherwise, why would the person behind you want to kill me?"Wes scoffed, then realized something. "It was Mr. Micah who told you, wasn't it? You really have a way of deceiving him."His hostility towards Nina increased."But why don't you talk about how ruthless your young lady is?" Nina retorted."Don't you dare speak ill of her!" Wes pressed the knife against Nina's neck, his voice menacing. "You're about to die, and you still have so much to say. Do you think I won't kill you?"Nina's breath caught, and she dared not move.Following Wes out of the forest, she noted how familiar he seemed with the terrain."You're very familiar with this place," she remarked. "You must have walked through here many times."Wes sneered. "I grew up in these mountains. This forest is nothing. I know every inch of it.""How much longer do we have to walk?" Nina asked.

Her eyes turned redder, tears stubbornly welling up as if refusing to fall. Karina, watching the girl’s pained struggle, felt a pang of sympathy. She was about to say something to console her when Wilfred gently pulled her behind him, shielding her once more. His gaze remained cold, but his tone carried an unmistakable impatience. “That’s enough. This ends here. Don’t come bothering us again.”The girl froze as if struck by his blunt and merciless words. Her body trembled, and at last, the tears spilled over, rolling down her cheeks and hitting the ground in heavy drops. She opened her mouth, managing to squeeze out a broken, choked whisper: “I… I just…” But the rest of her words were swallowed by the overwhelming tide of her emotions, dissolving into silence.Wilfred frowned slightly but didn’t respond further. He simply took Karina’s hand and turned to leave. Just as they were about to walk away, the girl suddenly shouted hysterically, “Wilfred, I’ve liked you for so long! E

Karina sensed the girl’s unfriendly gaze and instinctively moved closer to Wilfred. Without a word, Wilfred casually placed a hand on her shoulder, a subtle but protective gesture. The girl’s jealousy flared even stronger at the sight. Forcing a strained smile, she turned to Karina and asked, “And who might this be?”Wilfred answered before Karina could speak. “This is Karina, my… friend.” As he spoke, he glanced at Karina, a trace of warmth flickering in his gaze, unnoticed by anyone but her. The girl let out a faint scoff. “A friend, huh? Dr. Wilfred, you’re always so busy with work. It’s rare for you to take time off, yet you didn’t think to invite me? I thought we were close. After all, you took such good care of me when I was your patient.”Her voice was laced with grievance and subtle reproach. Wilfred frowned slightly. His tone remained polite but distant. “It’s good that you’ve recovered. Taking time off is just for relaxation. I didn’t give it much thought.”Though

“Be careful,” Wilfred whispered, his voice carrying a barely noticeable tremor. Karina leaned into his embrace and said softly, “Thank you. I was too careless.”They proceeded cautiously down the corridor and arrived at a room filled with ancient books and peculiar instruments. Curious, Karina picked up a dusty old book. As soon as she opened it, the faint sound of gears turning echoed in the room. Slowly, a stone table emerged from the center of the floor, revealing a complex puzzle box resting on top.Karina studied the puzzle box carefully, noticing that each piece was engraved with unique symbols and patterns. She tried fitting a few pieces together but couldn’t make sense of it. Meanwhile, Wilfred searched the room for other clues and discovered an ancient mural in one corner. The mural depicted several figures gathered around a similar-looking box, seemingly performing some kind of ritual. He examined the gestures and expressions of the figures in the mural and suddenly

Wilfred snapped out of his thoughts, meeting Karina’s eager gaze. Without hesitation, he nodded. “Sure, as long as it’s something you’ll enjoy.”The two of them arrived at an escape room venue, where the receptionist greeted them warmly.Karina asked curiously, “Hi, we’d like to play an escape room. What themes do you have?”The receptionist smiled and began explaining, “We have a horror-themed ‘Midnight Fright,’ an adventure-themed ‘Lost Tomb,’ and a mystery-themed ‘Misty Manor.’ Each has its own level of difficulty and style.”Wilfred looked at Karina. She thought for a moment before saying, “Let’s try ‘Lost Tomb.’ It sounds mysterious and fun.”The receptionist nodded. “This theme is very popular, but it’s also quite challenging. Are you sure?”Wilfred replied confidently, “No problem. We’ll go with this one.”“All right,” the receptionist continued. “The ticket price for this theme is $30 per person. If you complete it within the time limit, you’ll even get a special gift fr

Leonard, a cheerful and outgoing young man, worked skillfully at the machine while apologizing profusely. “Sorry about this. I don’t know what’s up with this machine today. It’s being a bit temperamental. I hope it’s not causing too much trouble for you.”Karina smiled back warmly. “It’s no problem at all.”As Leonard glanced up at Karina and Wilfred, he couldn’t help but comment, “You two look great together! Are you on a date?”Karina’s cheeks flushed slightly, and she opened her mouth to clarify, but Wilfred cut in first. “Thank you. It’s a rare day off, so I thought I’d take her out to relax.”Startled, Karina glanced at him in surprise, but the unexpected sweetness of his words brought a quiet warmth to her heart.Leonard grinned knowingly. “This movie’s been super popular lately. Lots of couples have been coming to watch it. You’re lucky to have snagged tickets—later in the day, it’s almost impossible to get seats.”Wilfred nodded politely. “Is that so? Then I suppose we’re

Karina couldn’t reconcile the composed, confident, and highly skilled Wilfred she knew with the idea of him as a slave. Her lips trembled as though she wanted to say something, but the words wouldn’t come. Wilfred noticed the shock in her expression and let out a faint, bitter smile before continuing. “In that dark, endless hell, I was subjected to all kinds of drug experiments every day. My body and mind were pushed to the brink, treated as nothing more than a tool. My life and death were entirely in their hands.” A sharp pang shot through Karina’s chest as she listened. She couldn’t begin to imagine the suffering Wilfred had endured. “How did you escape?” she managed to ask, her voice barely above a whisper. Wilfred’s gaze grew distant, his eyes clouded with memories. “There was a rare moment of carelessness during a transfer. I seized the opportunity with everything I had left and escaped. After that, I hid my identity, pouring all my effort into studying medici

Instead of heading out to eat, Wilfred decided to head home. It was the weekend, and with Mrs. Santos off-duty, they could cook for themselves. The fridge had just enough ingredients left for a proper meal. Karina pulled out an unopened carton of cream and called toward the living room, “Do you like cream of mushroom soup?” A response came from Wilfred, and with his approval, she got to work preparing the ingredients. The dishes she planned weren’t particularly complicated, so in no time, the table was filled with food. After all the bustling in the kitchen, Karina almost forgot the reason she had come in the first place. But seeing Wilfred pick up his utensils brought her back to her thoughts. “I wanted to ask you about your sleepwalking last night. Mrs. Santos said it happens often,” she said, her tone filled with concern. Karina had known Wilfred for quite a while now, and their relationship was fairly close. Yet she had never heard about his sleepwalking, not from hi

Yvette’s expression lit up with the thrill of gossip. “Who are we talking about? Is it Dr. Wilfred?” “It’s about a friend,” Karina lied smoothly, her face betraying nothing. Yvette’s face immediately screamed, “Yeah, right.”“Come on, at least come up with a better excuse. That ‘it’s for a friend’ line is so overused it’s practically expired,” she teased, before shifting gears. “Alright, spill the details. And don’t leave anything out. I want to know everything. Not just for gossip but to help you figure things out.” With no other choice, Karina recounted Wilfred’s hot-and-cold behavior toward her. After hearing the story, Yvette leaned back with a sharp hiss, as if processing something heavy. “I think your, uh, friend’s boyfriend might just have something he’s keeping to himself. Maybe there’s a reason he doesn’t want her to know.” Karina’s brows furrowed slightly. “Think about it,” Yvette continued. “If he really didn’t care, would he have been so quick to catch he

Karina stood, but as she took a step, her foot caught on something, and she nearly fell. Before she could hit the ground, Wilfred caught her. The unexpected gesture left Karina more confused than ever. If he was so cold and distant moments ago, why would he help her like this? She wasn’t the only one caught off guard. Wilfred himself was surprised by his reaction. It had been pure instinct. The moment he saw her about to fall, he moved to catch her without a second thought. It was as if his heart acted faster than his words ever could. Before she could ask anything, Wilfred released her quickly, his demeanor detached once more, as if trying to explain away his actions. “Regardless, thank you for earlier.” He hesitated briefly before adding, “Do you have a way to get home? I can drive you if it’s inconvenient.” The warmth Karina felt moments ago instantly turned cold. She forced a bitter smile. “No need. I’ll get home on my own.” She laughed at herself inwardly, a s
